Chapter 2

He was waiting outside my building.

I saw him before he saw me. He was standing just past the revolving doors, hands in his jacket pockets, doing that thing where he tilts his chin up slightly — like he's the reasonable one arriving to sort out a misunderstanding. Around him, colleagues poured out of the lobby in clusters, talking, checking phones, splitting off toward the parking garage.

I kept walking.

"Lila." He fell into step beside me. "Hey. Lila, come on."

I didn't stop.

"Babe." His hand closed around my arm, just above the elbow. Light pressure. The kind that says *I'm not grabbing you, I'm just asking you to pause.* "Just let me explain. You've been in your head for two days and I think if we just talk —"

I stopped.

I looked down at his hand on my arm. Then I looked up at him.

I removed his hand. Carefully. Like lifting something off a surface I didn't want scratched.

Then I reached into the inside pocket of my coat, took out the ring, and held it out to him.

"The engagement is over," I said. "I'll be out of the apartment by Friday."

Somebody behind us went quiet. Then somebody else.

Philip stared at the ring in my palm. His mouth opened. "You're not — this is a reaction, Lila. You're upset, I get that, but this is not —"

"Philip." My voice was level. Almost gentle. "Take the ring."

He took it. Reflexively, the way you catch something someone drops. His fingers closed around it and he stood there on the sidewalk with his fist at his side, and I turned and walked to my car and I did not look back. Not once.

I heard nothing behind me. No footsteps. No voice calling my name again.

Just the sound of the city, and my own heels on the pavement, and the quiet that follows a door closing.

---

I found out about the condo on Thursday.

Jamie, a mutual friend, mentioned it the way people mention things they assume you already know. *Oh, I heard Philip's been showing someone around that riverfront place — is that finalized?* She was already moving on to something else before she finished the sentence.

I drove past the building that evening.

They were in the lobby. Philip had his back to the glass, arm extended toward the river view, doing the gesture I had watched him practice in our apartment when he was excited about something. Skyler stood beside him, laughing at whatever he'd just said, her hand resting briefly on his forearm.

She was wearing a cream-colored coat. She looked very comfortable.

I picked up my phone and filmed fifteen seconds of footage through the windshield. Silent. Steady. Then I put the phone down, pulled away from the curb, and drove home.

I sat in the parking lot of our building for four minutes. I know it was four minutes because I watched the clock on the dashboard. Then I went upstairs, opened my laptop, and blocked Philip on every platform. Email. Phone. Every shared account we hadn't already separated. I went through the list methodically, the way I'd go through a checklist before closing a file.

When it was done, I closed the laptop.

The apartment was half-empty. Boxes along one wall. My things on one side, his on the other, the division so clean it almost looked intentional.

It was intentional.

---

I cried that night.

I want to be precise about this: I cried once. I sat on the floor of the bedroom with my back against the bed and I let it happen, and I was very clear with myself about what I was crying for.

Not Philip. Not the ring or the apartment or even the $320,000, though the $320,000 had its own particular weight.

I was crying for the version of me that had believed, genuinely believed, that if you were careful enough and fair enough and disciplined enough, you could build something that wouldn't collapse. That the right variables, managed correctly, could protect you from the kind of loss that had nothing to do with your own choices.

My mother had learned that lesson when I was eleven. I had watched her learn it. I had built my entire life around not learning it the same way.

And here I was, on the floor, thirty-two years old, learning it anyway.

I let myself have twenty minutes. Then I got up.

I went to the kitchen table where I'd left a small stack of Philip's old receipts — ones I'd pulled from the notebook while building the spreadsheet. I folded each one into a perfect quarter. Crisp corners. Clean edges. I dropped them into the trash one at a time.

It took maybe three minutes.

When I was done, I washed my hands, made tea, and sat down to review my Friday flight details.

New York was waiting. I had already made it wait long enough.
