Chapter 3

He called seventeen times.

I watched the screen light up on the nightstand, one call rolling into the next, his name appearing and disappearing like a pulse. I was already dressed. My suitcase was by the door. My coat was on.

On the eighteenth call, I picked up.

"Don't hang up," he said immediately. "Please. The deadline is today, Lila. Today. If you just — if you use the trust fund to cover the deposit, we can still save this. We can still —"

"Come up," I said. "I'll buzz you in."

Silence. Then: "Okay. Okay, yeah. Thank you."

I hung up and pulled the document from my bag.

It was a single page. My attorney had prepared it two days ago. I had read it four times. It said, in clean legal language, that I relinquished all claim to the riverfront property — the unit, the deposit, the earnest money, all of it. My signature would sever the last financial thread connecting me to that deal.

Connecting me to him.

I heard the elevator. Then his knock — three times, too fast, the knock of a man who has been rehearsing what he'll say in the lobby.

I opened the door.

Philip looked like he hadn't slept. His shirt was wrinkled at the collar. He had his keys in his hand for no reason, the way people hold things when they need something to grip.

"Thank you," he said, stepping inside. "Seriously, Lila, thank you for —"

"Sit down."

He sat on the edge of the couch. I stayed standing. I held out the document.

He took it. His eyes moved across the first line. Then stopped.

"What is this."

"A waiver. I'm relinquishing my claim to the property."

He looked up. "That's — no. No, that's not — " He stood. "Lila, if you sign this, the deal collapses. My earnest money —"

"Is forty thousand dollars. Yes."

"You're going to let forty thousand dollars disappear because you're angry —"

"I'm not angry."

And I wasn't. That was the thing he couldn't read on my face, and I could see it confusing him — the absence of heat where he expected fire. I took the document back from his hands, set it on the kitchen counter, and uncapped a pen.

"Lila." His voice cracked on the second syllable. "Please. Just — think about what you're doing. Seven years. We built this together. You're going to throw that away over one mistake?"

I signed my name. Clean and even, the way I sign everything.

I held the document out to him.

He didn't take it. He just stood there, and I watched the color leave his face the way water drains from a glass — slowly, then all at once. His mouth opened. Nothing came out.

"Philip." I set the document on the cushion beside him. "Take it to the title company."

I picked up my coat, my bag, my suitcase.

I left him standing in the middle of a room that was never mine to begin with.

---

I sent the email from the departure gate.

The spreadsheet was attached. Forty-seven rows. Seven years. Every utility, every grocery run, every month I had quietly covered what he couldn't. The surplus — my overpayment, calculated to the dollar — was $53,000. I had already transferred it back to his account that morning. The math was finished. The file was closed.

The subject line was blank. The body of the email had two words.

*We're even.*

I hit send. Then I boarded the plane.

---

Somewhere over the Rockies, my phone buzzed once before I switched it to airplane mode.

It was from my mother. A wire notification — $10,000 — and below it, one line of text.

*A woman should never have an empty bank account. Come home if you need to. But I know you won't need to.*

I read it once. Then I read it again.

My mother had learned this lesson when I was eleven. She had learned it in the worst way possible — blindsided, broke, left to rebuild with nothing but a spiral notebook and a refusal to be destroyed. She had never lectured me about it. She had just lived it, quietly and completely, until it became the air I breathed.

I thought about her at the kitchen table. The notebook. The two jobs. The way she had never once asked anyone to save her.

I put my phone in my bag.

Outside the window, the sky was the particular dark blue that exists only at altitude — deep and still and indifferent to everything happening below it. I leaned my head back against the seat.

New York was four hours away. I had a start date, a sublet, and a balance sheet that was finally, completely clean.

I closed my eyes.

For the first time in seven years, the numbers were exactly right.
