My Fiancé Paid to Destroy Me
Chapter 2
I woke before dawn, my chest still aching from Nathaniel's words. The apartment felt foreign, as if the walls themselves had absorbed his disgust. I slipped out while he slept, driving to the salvage yard in the pre-morning gray, desperate for the comfort of broken things I could fix.
The yard was silent except for the distant hum of the city coming to life. I unlocked the chain-link gate and stepped into my sanctuary, the familiar scents of metal and ozone wrapping around me like an old friend's embrace. But something new caught my eye—a small, elegant cup sitting on the wooden steps of my workshop.
I approached it slowly, as if it might disappear. It was a latte, still warm, served in one of those delicate ceramic cups with a handle so small it barely fit my finger. The foam was poured into an intricate pattern I couldn't quite name but recognized as something beautiful. Tucked beneath it was a small note card.
"The beauty of restoration is seeing value where others see waste. – E"
I traced the elegant 'E' with my fingertip, feeling something shift in my chest. Someone had seen me—the real me, not the 'embarrassing' grease monkey. I didn't need to ask who it was. I could picture Ezekiel in his pristine café, noticing the light change as I arrived early, understanding without words what I needed.
For the first time in months, I felt seen.
That feeling carried me through the next three weeks, though Nathaniel's behavior only worsened. He stopped coming to the yard entirely. At first, I told myself he was busy with work. That's what he claimed, at least—endless financial audits, late-night client meetings, emergency portfolio adjustments.
But one evening, while scrolling through my phone during a quiet dinner alone, I saw it: a photo posted by one of Kylee's friends. Nathaniel and Kylee, champagne glasses raised at the Seattle Country Club's annual gala. The caption read: "Power couple alert! Nathaniel Shaw and Kylee Larson making waves at the SCC! #SeattleElite #NewMoney"
My fingers froze over the screen. The timestamp showed 9:47 PM—the exact time Nathaniel had texted me an hour earlier, claiming he was "swamped with spreadsheets" and would "grab dinner at the office." The lie burned worse than the image of them laughing together, his arm draped possessively around her waist.
I scrolled further, finding more photos: them at a wine tasting at Canlis, posing in front of the sculpture garden; Kylee's manicured hand resting on Nathaniel's chest as they smiled at the camera. Each photo was tagged with locations and dates that matched his "work emergencies."
The worst part wasn't the lies. It was how easily I had believed them, how desperately I had wanted to trust that the man I supported for a decade wouldn't betray me so completely.
Then came the final blow. Without warning, Nathaniel's voice echoed across the yard as he led a group of suited men through the gate. I looked up from the server I was disassembling, my hands covered in thermal paste, to see him striding confidently ahead of five of his colleagues, Kylee glued to his side.
"This is it, gentlemen. The famous Collins Salvage," Nathaniel announced, his voice carrying a performative folksiness that made my skin crawl. "Prepare yourselves for quite the... authentic experience."
His colleagues exchanged uncomfortable glances as they took in the mountains of circuit boards and the industrial equipment. Kylee's nose wrinkled visibly, her designer heels sinking slightly into the gravel.
"Careful, Ky," Nathaniel said, loud enough for me to hear. "Wouldn't want those Louboutins getting... contaminated."
The group laughed, and Nathaniel's eyes met mine across the yard, challenging me to react. I stood slowly, wiping my hands on my coveralls, feeling the heat of humiliation rise to my cheeks.
"Savannah here is showing us how the other half lives," he continued, gesturing grandly at my workspace. "It's quite the... educational experience. Very authentic. Very... rustic."
More laughter. More eyes on me, waiting for me to break. But as I looked at Nathaniel's smug smile, I realized something had shifted inside me. The pain was still there, but alongside it was something new—a quiet, simmering resolve.
