Chapter 4

Raphael’s Upper East Side townhouse was quiet and warm.

Dr. Miller came and went, checking my wrist and leaving an ointment for the cut inside my mouth. After the doctor left, the house slipped back into silence.

Raphael brought a bowl of warm water and a clean washcloth. He sat beside me on the low sofa. He didn't ask what happened. He didn't ask why I went there.

Slowly, carefully, he pressed the damp cloth against my split lip. The warm water stung, but his touch was light. When he wiped away the dried blood, he set the cloth down and held an ice pack wrapped in soft linen against my swollen cheek.

His eyes stayed on mine. They were calm now, steady as an anchor. He didn't say a single word. He just held the ice so my tired arm didn't have to.

Around 2:00 a.m., the silence became too heavy.

I couldn't sit on the sofa anymore. My chest felt tight, like bands of steel were squeezing the air out of my lungs. I walked into the kitchen, slid down the front of the lower cabinets, and sat flat on the cold hardwood floor.

Then, everything broke.

The tears came without warning. I pulled my knees to my chest and buried my face.

It wasn't just about the slap. It wasn't even about Julian dragging me across that floor.

It was about the last six years.

Six years of making myself smaller. Six years of biting my tongue so Julian wouldn't feel insecure. When he wanted his name on my patent, I said yes. When he spent our weekends catering to Scarlet, I told myself to be understanding. When he criticized my clothes or my laugh, I changed them. I had spent six years being useful, quiet, and endlessly forgiving.

I had erased myself until there was almost nothing left.

I sobbed until my ribs ached. My whole body shook.

Raphael didn't try to shush me. He didn't tell me to stop crying.

He stood up, walked to the stove, and turned on the burner.

A few minutes later, the kitchen filled with the rich, warm scent of toasted garlic and olive oil.

Aglio e olio.

Years ago, during our second year of graduate school, I had a terrible fever. Raphael had asked what I wanted, and I mumbled that my grandmother used to make me simple garlic pasta whenever I felt sick. It was the only meal that ever made me feel completely safe.

I had mentioned it once. Ten years ago.

The clinking of ceramic broke the quiet. Raphael walked over with a steaming white bowl and a fork. He sank onto the floor right next to me, his long legs stretched out against the cabinets.

He set the bowl in my lap and placed the fork in my fingers.

He didn't offer advice. He didn't say everything was going to be okay. He just sat shoulder-to-shoulder with me in the dark kitchen, letting his warmth seep into my side while I took my first bite.

The storm hit at sunrise.

My phone started buzzing at 6:30 a.m. It didn't stop. Ten notifications turned into fifty, then hundreds.

I picked it up from the kitchen counter. My screen was flooded with alerts from Twitter, Instagram, and news blogs.

Chloe had sent three panicked texts: *Viv, do not look at social media. Call me right now.*

I opened the link anyway.

It was a video, already sitting at four million views.

The footage was shot from a low angle on the bedside table in Room 412—Scarlet’s hidden second phone.

The clip was edited with cruel perfection.

It showed Scarlet collapsing to the floor, clutching my knees, sobbing her heart out. The audio captured her weeping voice: *“I am so scared of dying alone... you're the only person who can save my life.”*

Then came the cut.

It skipped Julian’s threats. It skipped the forged forms. It cut straight to my face, cold and clinical, saying: *“I need to independently verify this before consenting to any medical procedure.”*

The video cut off before Julian ever raised his hand.

Below the clip, the caption read:

*“She could save her but she won't. Is this the woman behind America's next miracle drug?”*

Underneath, the hashtag climbed to the number one trending spot in the country:

**#HeartlessViviana**

The comments were a wall of pure venom.

*Monster.*

*She should rot in prison.*

*Cancel her drug. Boycott Marshall Compound 7.*

I opened my inbox. Dozens of unread emails filled the page.

*Die, you selfish bitch.*

*Watch your back when you walk outside.*

*I hope you get cancer next.*

Then, an email popped up from the chairman of our biotech firm.

*Subject: Emergency Board Notice - Immediate Suspension.*

I tapped it open.

*Dear Dr. Marshall,*

*In light of the recent viral media concerning the incident at Mount Sinai, the Board of Directors has voted to place you on immediate, indefinite administrative leave pending a full internal ethics review. Your lab access has been revoked effective immediately.*

My hands went completely numb.

They were taking my life's work. They were burying me in public, using my own stolen blood to do it.

A hand gently covered mine.

Raphael leaned over the counter and took the glowing phone from my fingers. He flipped it face down on the marble.

His face was completely calm, but his dark eyes were cold as ice.

"They played their card," Raphael said softly. "Now we play ours."
