Chapter 5

The phone sat face down on the glass coffee table.

My cheek throbbed with a dull, heavy heat. Every time I swallowed, the cut inside my mouth tasted like copper.

The screen buzzed against the glass. A short vibration, then another. More strangers wishing I were dead. More comments calling me a monster.

I stared at the black casing.

Suddenly, a sick, familiar urge crawled up my throat.

*Just call him.*

The thought came out of nowhere, cold and automatic. It was six years of muscle memory speaking. Six years of smoothing things over, taking the blame, and making Julian happy so the fighting would stop.

*Call Julian. Tell him you’ll do the surgery. Tell him you’ll save her. Just make the screaming stop.*

My hand lifted off the sofa cushion. My fingers hovered over the glass, trembling. My thumb reached for the screen.

Then I saw my reflection in the dark phone.

My left cheek was purple and puffy. My lower lip was split. Julian had done that. He had done that with his own hand, in a public hallway, while orderlies looked at the floor.

I yanked my hand back. I dug my nails into my palm until the pain cleared my head.

*No.*

I was done apologizing for existing.

I looked up. Raphael was leaning against the kitchen doorway, holding two glasses of water. He had been watching me in silence, not interfering, giving me the space to choose.

I sat up straight.

"I need a lawyer," I said. My voice was raspy, but it didn't shake. "Actually, I need several."

A slow, grim smile touched Raphael’s mouth.

"Already on it," he said.

Two hours later, four attorneys in bespoke suits were seated around the mahogany table in Raphael's library.

Leading them was Arthur Vance, the senior partner of Foster & Vance. He didn't look at my bruised face with pity. He looked at me with cold, surgical focus.

"To void Julian Hayes's claim on Compound 7," Arthur said, tapping a pen on a yellow legal pad, "we need absolute proof of origin. The digital filings at your lab have all been altered. His name is on every primary patent draft."

"He altered the server logs," I said calmly. "He didn't touch the paper."

"What paper?" Arthur asked.

"My parents were old-school researchers," I replied. "They taught me never to trust cloud servers with proprietary formulas. I kept physical records."

By noon, Raphael’s private security van drove us out to my parents’ old home in Westchester. The house was quiet, smelling of dust and dried lavender.

I walked into my father’s former study, pulled open the bottom of the oak closet, and dragged out a heavy, matte-black fireproof lockbox.

I punched in the combination. The heavy latch clicked open.

Inside sat eight thick, black-and-white composition notebooks.

I lifted the first one out. The edges were worn soft from years of handling. Dark rings from old coffee mugs stained the cardboard cover.

I opened the pages. Every single line was written in my neat, tight handwriting. Every reaction, every temperature variance, every failed molecule. Each entry was stamped with a manual date-and-time punch and signed across the margin.

"Here," I said, laying them on the desk. "Six years of raw synthesis data. Julian didn't write a single syllable. The handwriting and lab stamps date back to before I even met him."

Arthur picked up the top notebook, flipping through the pages with widening eyes. "This is gold, Viviana. This is ironclad proof of sole inventorship under federal patent law."

Back at the townhouse, we added more fuel to the fire.

We pulled up my personal email archives. We found timestamped drafts I had sent to peer-review journals before Julian ever joined the project. We found emails from Julian where he begged me to add his name as a co-lead: *Just for the investors, babe. You know I suck at lab chemistry, but my dad's network needs to see my name.*

Line by line, the lie came apart.

***

While the lawyers built the patent case, Raphael’s cybersecurity team set up in the study down the hall.

Four monitors glowed in the dark room. A young man named Leo tapped rapidly on a keyboard, tracking data packets.

"Found the source of the leak," Leo said, turning his chair around.

Raphael and I stepped behind his shoulder.

"The video wasn't uploaded from the hospital network," Leo explained, pointing to a string of IP addresses. "It was uploaded thirty minutes after the incident via an encrypted hotspot. The device ID matches an iPhone 13 registered to an alias in London."

"Scarlet," I whispered. "She lived in London three years ago."

"Exactly," Leo nodded. "It’s a burner phone she keeps off the grid. And look at this."

He opened a colorful analytics chart.

"The hashtag #HeartlessViviana didn't trend organically. The first ten thousand retweets were bought through a bot farm based out of Eastern Europe. Payment was routed through Julian Hayes’s personal credit card at 5:45 this morning."

A cold disgust settled in my gut. They hadn't just reacted. They had planned this smear campaign like a product launch.

"Look at the video again," Raphael said suddenly.

His voice was low, right by my ear. He leaned over the desk, using a mouse to scrub backward on the original raw video file from Room 412.

The screen showed Scarlet on her knees, crying, begging for my bone marrow.

"Watch her right hand," Raphael said.

He slowed the playback to half speed.

On the screen, Scarlet wept: *“None of the national registries have a match for me...”*

Her right hand drifted up. Her thumb rubbed the thin, pale scar along her jawline.

A second later, she spoke again: *“You're the only person who can save my life.”*

Her fingers rubbed the scar again, twice, firm and fast.

"She does it every time," Raphael said quietly. "Look at the footage from your engagement party. Look at her interviews from college."

Leo pulled up three different archival clips.

Whenever Scarlet played the innocent victim—whenever she told an outright lie—her right hand rose to that childhood scar. It was a nervous reflex. A physical tell she didn't even know she had.

"She's lying," I said, staring at the monitor. The certainty hit me like ice water. "She isn't dying of leukemia."

Raphael straightened up. His jaw set hard.

"Then let's find out what she's actually hiding," he said.
