Chapter 4

The drive upstate took two hours and forty minutes. Victor didn't turn on the radio. He didn't try to fill the silence either. He just drove, one hand loose on the wheel, checking the rearview mirror every few minutes to look at Mom in the back seat, wrapped in her own blanket from home, the one with the frayed satin edge she'd had since before I was born.

"There's a diner in twenty minutes," he said. "Mrs. Dunn, do you want anything? They do a decent grilled cheese."

Mom smiled, eyes half-closed. "Only if you're having one too."

"I always order the same thing," he said. "Consistency's the only luxury I allow myself."

She laughed, a small dry sound, and looked at me like she wanted to say something. She didn't. She just reached over and squeezed my hand.

The hospice was a low cedar building tucked behind a stand of pines, more cabin than hospital. Victor parked, came around, and lifted Mom's wheelchair out of the trunk before I even had my seatbelt off. He wheeled her in himself. At the front desk, he signed three forms I didn't know existed, spelled Mom's insurance information from memory because I'd told it to him once, weeks ago, in passing. I stood there useless, holding her overnight bag, watching him do the things I should have been doing.

"You didn't have to do all that," I said, once we were in the room.

"I know," he said, and hung her framed photo of me at graduation on a nail across from the bed, angled so she could see it from her pillow.

That night he made dinner in the little communal kitchen down the hall. Nothing fancy. Eggs, toast, soup from a can he doctored with pepper and thyme he must have brought from his own kitchen. He carried it to Mom's room on a tray and sat with her while I finally, finally let my eyes close on the cot in the corner. I hadn't slept more than three hours a night in five days. I don't remember falling asleep. I just remember his voice, low, answering some question of hers, and then nothing.

I woke up near midnight. The room was dark except for the little lamp on the side table. Victor was still there, in the chair, jacket off, tie loose. Mom was asleep. He looked over at me and put a finger to his lips.

Later, I found the page in her journal. She must have written it that same night, after he left.

*He does not perform kindness. He simply is it.*

I read it twice and didn't tell him.

---

Manhattan didn't wait for me to grieve.

Sophie called two days later, breathless. "Richard Lang's people called the firm asking about the Halloway filing. Brody put Preston on it — you know, the second-year who still cc's the wrong partner on everything. Lang's assistant asked, and I quote, 'Where is Lily Dunn?' Preston didn't have an answer."

By Thursday, Lang himself had requested a meeting. Not with Brody. With Victor's firm.

We took the call from the hospice parking lot, Victor's laptop propped on the dash, me in the passenger seat with a legal pad on my knee like it was any other Tuesday. I walked Lang through the merger structure I'd built two years ago — the indemnification clauses, the escrow triggers, the three amendments nobody at Ford & Associates had bothered to update since I left. Victor didn't say much. He didn't need to. He just watched Lang's face change, the way a man's face changes when he realizes he's been paying full price for a service he was only getting half of.

Lang signed that afternoon.

I found out later — from Sophie, of course, because Sophie always knew — that Brody heard about it standing in his own conference room. Grace Kim texted the group chat: *Lang just walked. Confirmed. Went to Henderson's firm.* Someone else wrote, *Wonder why,* with a laughing emoji that wasn't really a joke.

Brody, apparently, went very still. Then he picked up his phone and dialed my old number — the one that had been mine for five years, the one he still had memorized — before some small, cruel part of his brain reminded him it didn't work anymore. Sophie said his thumb hovered over the screen for a full three seconds before he understood.

Then he threw the phone. Hard. It hit the glass wall of his own office and cracked down the middle, right through the photo of him and Macy at nine years old, missing their front teeth, that he still kept as his lock screen.

Nobody in the office said a word. Sophie said the silence lasted almost a full minute.

I didn't feel triumphant when I heard. I felt something quieter than that — a door closing somewhere far away, a sound I used to be afraid of and now just noted, the way you note weather.

Back in the cabin, Mom was awake when I came in. She patted the seat beside her.

"He's a good driver," she said, meaning Victor, who was outside on the phone with the doctor.

"He is," I said.

She looked at me a long moment, and didn't say anything else. She didn't have to. I already knew what she meant.
