Chapter 5

Sophie's text came in at 11:03 in the morning, three photos stacked on top of each other.

*She's really doing this,* the caption said. *Don't react. I mean it, Lily. Don't give her the satisfaction.*

The first photo was a pan of lasagna, cheese bubbling at the edges, Brody's hand reaching into frame with a spatula. The caption underneath read *home is where the heart is 🥰.* I knew that recipe. His grandmother's. I'd made it with him a dozen times, standing hip to hip at his stove, flour on my sleeve.

The second was a Thanksgiving throwback. Macy in his flannel, the green plaid one, sleeves rolled up to her elbows because it swallowed her. She was laughing at something off camera, head tipped back, hair loose.

The third made my stomach turn, just slightly, before it went still again. Her left hand, fingers spread on a marble counter. A ring. Round cut, thin gold band. I recognized it because Brody had shown it to me once, in a velvet box in his sock drawer, and said, *I'm saving this for the right moment.* That was two years ago. I'd waited for the right moment for two years.

I sat with the phone in my lap and looked out at the porch railing, at the last of the leaves letting go of the branches one at a time, spinning down slow like they had nowhere urgent to be.

Mom was beside me in her chair, a blanket over her knees even though the afternoon was mild. Her breathing had a small catch in it now, a little hitch at the top of every inhale, something I'd stopped letting myself flinch at.

"What is it?" she asked. She'd seen my face change.

I didn't want to show her. But we didn't lie to each other anymore. Not since the journal.

I turned the screen toward her. She took her glasses off the chain around her neck and put them on, slow, and looked at the ring photo for a long moment. Longer than I expected.

"I always thought that ring was too small for you anyway," she said.

It came out flat, matter-of-fact, like she was commenting on the weather. And something in me just broke open, not in the bad way. I laughed. A real one, loud, the kind that comes up from your chest before you can stop it, the kind I hadn't done in weeks. It scraped a little on the way out, like a door that hadn't been opened in a while.

Mom smiled, pleased with herself, and patted my knee.

The cabin door opened behind us. Victor came out with two mugs, steam curling off the top, and stopped in the doorway. Just stopped, for a second, like he'd walked into a note he wanted to hear the end of. Then he crossed the porch and set a mug in my hands and one in Mom's, and didn't ask what was funny.

"You're missing the punchline," Mom told him.

"I don't need it," he said. "I like the sound better than I'd like the joke."

I didn't answer that. I just wrapped both hands around the mug and let the heat sink into my palms and watched the leaves keep falling.

---

In the city, Brody had started a routine of his own.

Sophie told me about it in pieces, the way she told me everything now, half amused and half disturbed. He'd started showing up at the City Clerk's office every morning at nine, when it opened, and staying until five, when it closed. He told the receptionist at his own firm he had "personal business." He told himself, apparently, that Lily would come back to finish the paperwork. Properly. With him. As if the first signature hadn't counted because it was the wrong one.

On the third day, he brought two coffees. Hers, oat milk, extra hot, the way I used to order it. He set it on the bench beside him and let it go cold.

On the fifth day, he brought flowers. White ranunculus, because once, years ago, I'd pointed at a bucket of them outside a bodega and said they were pretty, and he'd remembered, the way he remembered small things when it suited some larger performance. He held them the whole day, standing near the marble steps, shifting his weight, checking his phone every few minutes like it might have unblocked itself.

The clerk at the counter, a woman named Denise with reading glasses on a beaded chain, started to recognize him. Sophie heard it from a paralegal who heard it from a friend who filed a name change there. Denise had asked him, gently, on day four, if there was someone he was waiting for.

"My wife," he'd said. "Soon-to-be. There's been a delay."

He said it like a fact. Like a case still open, still winnable, if he just showed up enough times with the right flowers.

He had no idea the paperwork was already done. Signed, filed, finished, weeks ago, under a different name than the one he was waiting to sign.

I didn't feel sorry for him when Sophie told me. I felt something closer to distance — the particular quiet of watching a door shut from the other side of glass, knowing the person still knocking can't hear how far away the sound has already traveled.
