My Fiancé Fixed My Fight—So I Signed With His Mafia Rival Novel Cover

My Fiancé Fixed My Fight—So I Signed With His Mafia Rival

Dean, my fiancé, told me to take a dive in the championship—then forged a drug test to ruin me when I refused to lose. I broke our engagement on camera and signed with Luca Moretti, the feared mafia heir running Crown's rival promotion, because he offered what Dean never did: control of my own career. Now Dean threatens my brother, leaks private photos, and tries to scare me out of the cage, while Luca keeps me under his roof without crossing any line I haven't chosen. But if his family helped build Dean's empire, trusting him may be more dangerous than fighting the man who tried to own my loss.

Chapter 2

The silence in the tunnel was suffocating, broken only by the rapid-fire click of camera shutters.

Luca Moretti didn't flinch under the blinding lights. Reaching into the breast pocket of his tailored jacket, he pulled out a folded white document bearing the blue embossed seal of an independent, WADA-accredited laboratory.

He didn't hand it to Dean. He held it up directly before the cluster of microphones and lenses.

"Chain of custody report, stamped forty minutes ago," Luca said, his voice smooth and steady. "The B-sample Eva Vance provided at four o'clock yesterday carried barcode serial seven-one-four. The urine specimen your commission official just claimed failed was logged under seven-one-nine."

A ripple went through the reporters. One of the commission reps tried to reach for the paper, but Luca pulled it back just out of reach.

"The seal on seven-one-four was never broken," Luca continued. "It came back completely clean. Zero metabolites. Zero stimulants. Someone switched the labels before the transit courier reached the district lab."

My ears rang. My breath hitched in my chest as the cold weight of what Dean had done truly sank in. He hadn't just bet against me. When I knocked Roxanne Miller out in the second round, ruining his third-round payout, he had used a pre-planted dirty sample as his insurance policy to void the fight.

Dean stepped forward, his knuckles white around the ring I had shoved into his hand. Sweat beaded along his hairline.

"That's an unverified piece of paper from a rogue facility," Dean snapped, raising his voice so the mics would catch it. He reached out, his fingers digging into my elbow to wrench me backward. "Eva, you're exhausted and concussed. Don't let this vulture confuse you. We are leaving. Right now. We handle this inside our camp."

I ripped my arm out of his grasp, stepping back. "Don't touch me."

Dean's jaw tightened, a vein pulsing at his temple. "Eva, be smart. You're making a spectacle of yourself. Look at the cameras."

Luca stepped sideways, smoothly placing his broad frame between Dean and me. He didn't raise his hands, but the physical presence was an impenetrable wall.

"She told you not to touch her," Luca said quietly.

Dean scoffed, though his eyes betrayed a flicker of genuine fear. He leaned around Luca, fixing his glare on me. "You think he's doing this out of charity, Eva? Look at him! He's a predator. He's buying you while you're vulnerable. The second you walk out of here with him, you're just another piece of meat under his thumb."

Luca turned his head slightly, meeting Dean's frantic gaze with deadpan indifference.

"I'm offering her a door," Luca said. "You're the one who locked it."

Dean opened his mouth, but no sound came out.

Luca turned back to face me. He reached into his coat again and produced a slim black folder, flipping it open. Inside rested a single contract bearing the silver watermark of his promotion, Apex Global.

"Three fights," Luca said, his dark eyes searching mine. "Immediate reinstatement under our licensed banner in Nevada. Full purse protection, starting tonight. You sign, and my legal team handles the commission before midnight."

The press surged forward. Shouts erupted from the front row.

"Eva! Are you signing with Moretti?"

"Is this the end of your partnership with Crown?"

I looked down at the crisp white paper. The black ink looked so easy, so simple. A clean exit from the wreckage Dean had built around me.

My pulse pounded against my ribs. I looked from the paper up to Luca's unreadable face.

I had spent five years trusting a man who claimed he only wanted what was best for me. I had let Dean wrap my hands, negotiate my percentages, manage my calendar, and dictate my life. Look where that trust had put my brother. Look where it had put my title.

I wasn't trading a leash for a prettier collar.

"I'm not signing that," I said, my voice cutting through the clamor.

Dean let out a harsh, triumphant bark of laughter. "See? She's not stupid, Moretti. She knows who built her."

Luca didn't flinch. He kept his eyes locked on mine, waiting. "Why?"

"Because I don't sign standard boilerplate ever again," I said, stepping closer until only a foot of space separated us. "You want me on your roster? I rewrite the terms."

One of the sports journalists gasped behind us, but Luca didn't blink. "Name them."

"One," I said, holding up a taped finger. "I choose my own corner. Every coach, every cutman, every physical therapist answers to me, paid by me, vetted by me. You have zero say in who wraps my hands."

"Agreed," Luca said without hesitation.

"Two," I continued, my chin lifted. "I dictate my fight dates and my weight class. No short-notice replacements unless I personally clear them."

"Standard for champions," Luca replied, his voice calm. "Next."

"Three," I said, my voice hardening. "I retain fifty-one percent of all image licensing, and my buyout clause has a zero-dollar penalty if you fail to secure a title eliminator within nine months. And my lawyer reviews the final draft before a drop of ink touches the page."

The media was dead silent. Even the camera shutters seemed to pause. A fighter in my position, disgraced minutes ago in the cage, had no leverage. But I knew what I was worth. I had just flatlined the bantamweight champion in five minutes flat.

Dean lunged a step forward, his voice cracking with desperate rage. "Are you insane, Eva? You don't have a platform without Crown! You don't have a license!" He pointed a shaking finger at Luca. "If you walk with this man, you are dead in this sport! Crown will blackball you forever! Every promoter on the East Coast will slam their doors in your face! You won't even get sparring work in a church basement!"

I didn't even look at Dean. I kept my eyes entirely on Luca.

"Do we have a deal, Mr. Moretti?" I asked. "Or do I walk out the back door alone?"

A faint, razor-thin smile touched the corner of Luca's mouth. It was the first real expression I had seen on his face all night.

"We have a deal, Vance," Luca said. He closed the folder with a sharp snap and handed it to the assistant standing behind him. "The revised contract will be in your inbox by sunrise."

I took a slow, deliberate breath. The air tasted of sweat and blood, but for the first time in six years, it felt clean.

I turned around and looked at Dean.

He stood there under the harsh stadium halogen, looking small. The gold watch on his wrist, the tailored track jacket with my name stitched across the chest, the three-carat diamond ring still clutched in his sweaty palm—all of it bought with the blood I had spilled in thirty-foot cages while he cashed the checks.

"You're done, Dean," I said, loud enough for every microphone to pick up every syllable. "Never call my phone. Never come near my gym. And if you or any of your Queens friends come within a hundred yards of Mateo, I won't call the police. I'll come for you myself."

Dean's face twisted into an ugly mask of shock and hatred. "Eva, you ungrateful—"

I didn't wait to hear the rest.

I turned my back on him. I walked past the reporters, past the athletic commission guards who suddenly stepped out of the way, and moved to Luca's side.

Luca didn't try to touch my arm or steer my path. He simply matched my stride, flanking me like an iron wall against the flashing cameras, as we headed down the tunnel toward the exit.

Behind us, the press swarmed Dean, their microphones thrusting into his face as his empire collapsed under the glare of national television.

I kept my eyes fixed on the darkness ahead, the adrenaline finally giving way to a bone-deep chill.

I was free of Dean. But as the heavy steel doors pushed open to the cold night air, I looked at the powerful man walking beside me, knowing full well that a different kind of war had just begun.
