Chapter 2

The apartment door slammed open at 2 AM.

I jolted awake. Sterling stood in the bedroom doorway, backlit by the hall light. His shirt was half-untucked. His tie hung loose. Sweat gleamed on his forehead.

"Eleanora." His voice cracked. "We need to talk. Now."

I sat up, heart pounding. "What's wrong?"

He didn't answer. He turned and walked toward the kitchen. I grabbed my robe and followed.

The kitchen lights were too bright. Sterling leaned against the counter, both hands gripping the edge. His chest rose and fell like he'd been running.

"Sterling, you're scaring me."

He looked up. His eyes were red-rimmed. "I did something terrible."

I pulled the robe tighter. "What are you talking about?"

"The firm." He swallowed hard. "Whitmore Capital. I've been... I've been moving money. Client accounts. Offshore transfers. It started small but it—" His voice broke. "Eighty million, Eleanora. I took eighty million dollars."

The air left my lungs.

I stared at him. He stared back, waiting.

"You're joking," I whispered.

"I wish I was." He dragged both hands through his hair. "The FBI is investigating. They're going to indict me. Days, maybe a week. I'm done."

My knees felt weak. I reached for the counter to steady myself. "How could you—"

"I know." He stepped toward me, hands raised like he was approaching something fragile. "I know. But listen to me. There's a way to protect you."

"Protect me?"

"If we're still together when they come, they'll freeze everything. Your accounts. Your assets. Everything with your name on it." He pulled a folded document from his jacket pocket and set it on the counter. "You need to sign this. Tonight. A full dissolution. You walk away clean. No connection to me. No liability."

I looked at the document. My vision blurred at the edges.

"I don't understand," I said. My voice sounded small. Distant. "We're getting married in three months."

"I know." His eyes filled. Actual tears. "God, Eleanora, I know. But if you don't do this, they'll destroy you too. I can't let that happen."

I reached into my robe pocket. My phone was already there. I'd been sleeping with it close ever since that Reddit post. My thumb found the voice memo app. I pressed record without looking. The screen stayed dark in my pocket.

"Tell me what happened," I said quietly. "From the beginning."

Sterling exhaled. "It started two years ago. Small transfers. Just—just smoothing over gaps in quarterly reports. Then it got bigger. I thought I could pay it back. I thought—" He shook his head. "It doesn't matter what I thought. The internal audit starts Monday. They're going to find everything."

"Eighty million," I repeated.

"Eighty million."

"And you're telling me this now because—"

"Because I love you." He grabbed my hands. His palms were damp. "Because even though I've ruined my life, I won't ruin yours. Sign the agreement. Take nothing. Walk away. Please."

I looked down at our joined hands. Five years. Five years of his touch.

The apartment door opened.

I turned.

Valentina Rodriguez stood in the doorway, backlit by the hall light, holding a champagne flute. She wore a cashmere coat the color of cream. Her hair was perfect. Her lipstick was perfect. She smiled.

"Sorry I'm late," she said.

My hands went cold.

Sterling released me and stepped back. "Valentina."

She walked into the apartment like she'd been here a thousand times. She set the champagne flute on the entry table and shrugged off her coat. Underneath, she wore a black dress that probably cost more than my car payment.

"Eleanora," she said warmly. "It's good to finally do this properly."

I couldn't speak.

Sterling cleared his throat. "There's something else I need to tell you."

I looked at him. He looked at Valentina. She nodded.

"Valentina and I," he said slowly, "have been seeing each other again. For a while now."

The floor tilted.

"I didn't plan it," he continued. "But when everything started falling apart, she was there. And I realized—" He stopped. Started again. "I realized I'd been lying to myself. About what I wanted. Who I wanted."

Valentina stepped closer. She looked me up and down. Her gaze lingered on my unmanicured nails. My bare face. My old cotton robe.

"He tried," she said gently. "He really did. But you have to understand, Eleanora. You're... nice. You're steady. But Sterling needs more than nice." She gestured around the apartment. "Look at this place. Cream throw pillows. Sage green curtains. You decorated it like a catalog. Like you were playing house."

My throat closed.

"You read newspapers," Valentina continued. "Print ones. Like someone's grandmother. You go to bed at ten. You make grocery lists." She smiled. "You were never going to be enough for him."

Sterling looked away.

I stood there, robe pulled tight, phone recording every word in my pocket.

"Sign the agreement," Sterling said quietly. "Please. Let's end this cleanly."

Valentina picked up her champagne glass and took a sip.

I looked at the document on the counter. At Sterling. At the woman who had just walked into my home and dismantled me piece by piece.

Then I looked down at my hands and let my shoulders shake.

"Okay," I whispered.

Sterling exhaled in relief.

I reached for the pen.
