Chapter 3

I let my hand hover over the pen.

"Is there really no other way?" My voice cracked on the last word. I made sure of it.

Sterling's face softened. He stepped closer and placed his hand over mine. His palm was warm. Familiar. "This is the hardest thing I've ever done," he said. "But it's the only way to protect you."

Behind him, Valentina leaned against the counter. She watched me with the satisfied stillness of a cat that had already caught the mouse.

I let the first tear fall.

Then the second.

Sterling's grip tightened. "I'm so sorry," he whispered.

I picked up the pen. My hand shook. Not because I was broken. Because I needed them to believe I was.

I signed my name at the bottom of the page. The ink was black. The letters were neat. Five years dissolved in ten seconds.

Sterling exhaled like he'd been holding his breath underwater. Across the kitchen, Valentina's shoulders dropped half an inch. They thought it was relief. It was victory.

They exchanged a glance. Quick. Careful. The kind of look people share when they think no one is watching.

I set the pen down. "I need to pack."

"Of course." Sterling stepped back. "Take your time."

I walked to the bedroom and closed the door.

The suitcase was under the bed. I pulled it out and laid it open on the mattress. My hands moved fast. Efficient. Toothbrush. Jeans. Sweaters. Underwear. The poetry collection from the nightstand—pages worn soft from years of reading. My external hard drive from the desk drawer.

I did not take the framed engagement photo on the dresser. I did not take the throw pillows I had spent three weekends choosing at West Elm. I did not take the wedding binder with the guest list and the seating chart and the cake flavors we had tasted together on a Sunday afternoon.

I zipped the suitcase shut.

From the living room, I heard Valentina laugh. Low and private. Sterling murmured something I couldn't make out. She laughed again.

I stood at the bedroom doorway and looked back.

The gallery wall. Our faces smiling in black-and-white frames. The trip to Montauk. The New Year's party. The afternoon we got caught in the rain in Central Park and came home soaked and happy.

I had built this room. This life. I had chosen every piece of it.

I turned and wheeled the suitcase into the hall.

Sterling and Valentina were in the kitchen. He had his arm around her waist. She leaned into him like she had always belonged there.

Neither of them looked up when I passed.

I stopped at the front door.

Sterling's blazer hung on the hook. Charcoal gray. The one he had been wearing every single day for two weeks. The one he touched every morning with that private, satisfied smile.

I set my suitcase down.

I reached into the interior breast pocket.

My fingers closed around a small rectangle of paper. Smooth. Crisp. I pulled it out just enough to see the edge. New York State Lottery. Numbers printed in blue ink.

Fifty million dollars.

I slipped it into the inner pocket of my coat. My hand was steady. My face was calm.

From the kitchen, Valentina's voice drifted out. "Do you think she'll be okay?"

"She's stronger than she looks," Sterling said.

I picked up my suitcase.

I opened the door and stepped into the hallway. The motion-sensor lights flickered on. Thirty floors below, the city hummed. Traffic. Sirens. Life moving forward without pause.

I pulled out my phone. The voice memo was still recording. Two hours and sixteen minutes. Every word. Every confession. Every cruel, careless sentence Valentina had delivered like a gift.

I stopped the recording. I saved it. I backed it up to three separate clouds.

Then I opened my text messages and scrolled to Marcus Oyelaran. My oldest friend. The only attorney I trusted.

I typed: *Need to see you first thing tomorrow. Bring your recorder and a notary.*

His reply came in seconds. *Done. You okay?*

I didn't answer.

I walked to the elevator and pressed the button. The doors opened. I stepped inside and turned to face the hallway one last time.

The door to our apartment—to Sterling's apartment now—was still open. Light spilled into the hall. I could hear music. Soft laughter.

The elevator doors closed.

I descended thirty floors in silence.

When I reached the lobby, I walked past the doorman with a nod and stepped outside. The air was cold. Sharp. It filled my lungs and cleared my head.

Across the street, there was a clothing donation bin. Blue metal. Scratched and dented. A sign on the front read: *Your donations change lives.*

I crossed the street.

I pulled Sterling's blazer from my suitcase. I held it for a moment. Expensive wool. Perfectly tailored. He had worn it the night he proposed.

I folded it carefully. I opened the donation bin and dropped it inside.

The blazer disappeared into the dark.

Fifty million dollars. Gone.

I stepped back. I pulled my phone from my pocket. I dialed 911.

The operator answered on the second ring. "911, what's your emergency?"

"I need to report a crime," I said. My voice was steady. Clear. "My fiancé just confessed to embezzling eighty million dollars from his firm. Whitmore Capital. His name is Sterling Howell."

There was a pause. "Can you repeat that, ma'am?"

I did.

"Are you in danger?"

"No," I said. "But he is."

I gave them the address. I gave them his full name. I told them he had just confessed everything an hour ago and that I had recorded the entire conversation.

"Officers are on their way," the operator said. "Please stay on the line."

"I can't," I said. "But I'll send you the recording."

I hung up.

I opened my Uber app and requested a car. It arrived in three minutes. I climbed into the back seat and gave the driver an address in Brooklyn.

As we pulled away from the curb, I looked back at the building one last time.

Thirty floors up, the lights were still on.

I wondered how long it would take.

I didn't have to wait long.
