Chapter 1

The Plaza Hotel gleamed like a diamond against the Manhattan skyline, its grand facade promising the kind of fairytale romance I'd spent eight years dreaming of. Today was supposed to be different. Today, I was finally going to surprise Maddox at his "crucial merger signing" with a little luck charm I'd spent weeks choosing—a small silver compass to guide his way, just as he'd guided mine for so long.

I clutched the velvet box in my palm, my heart fluttering with anticipation as I stepped through the revolving doors. The lobby buzzed with activity, but not the crisp efficiency of a business meeting. Something else entirely.

"Excuse me," I murmured, squeezing past a florist carrying an armful of white peonies. "I'm looking for the Hunt Enterprises meeting?"

A woman in a headset glanced up from her clipboard. "Honey, this is the Cruz-Hunt wedding. If you're not on the list, I can't let you through."

My smile froze. "Wedding?"

She pointed toward a large board propped against a column. "Guest list is right there. But honestly, we're running behind, so if you're not—"

I didn't hear the rest. My feet carried me forward as if pulled by gravity until I stood before the elegant calligraphy that would shatter my world:

GROOM: MADDOX HUNT

BRIDE: ISABELA CRUZ

The room tilted sideways. Eight years. Eight years of promises that once he became CEO, once he secured his position, we would have everything—including a public life together. Eight years of whispered plans and secret meetings and dreams deferred.

"Ma'am, are you alright?" Someone touched my elbow. "You look like you might faint."

I jerked away, bumping into a waiter carrying champagne flutes. The glasses rattled dangerously close to tipping.

"Sorry," I whispered, though nothing about this situation called for my apology.

I needed to leave. Now. Before anyone recognized me as the woman who'd spent nearly a decade as Maddox Hunt's dirty little secret. But my feet wouldn't cooperate. Instead, they carried me deeper into the chaos, as if my body needed to witness the full scope of his betrayal.

The ballroom entrance loomed ahead, festooned with white roses and gold ribbons. Photographers clustered nearby, their cameras flashing in rapid succession.

"Isabela! Over here!" a photographer called. "Give us that million-dollar smile!"

And there she was.

Isabela Cruz stood like a vision in white, her dark hair swept into an elegant updo that accentuated her perfect bone structure. But it wasn't her beauty that stopped my breath—it was her dress.

The bodice featured hand-stitched lace in an intricate pattern I recognized instantly. The sweetheart neckline dipped just low enough to be alluring without crossing into vulgar. The skirt flowed like water, with a subtle train that extended behind her like a dream.

My dream. My design.

I pressed my hand against my mouth to stifle a sound that might have been a scream or a sob. Three years ago, I'd sketched that exact gown during a sleepless night, showing Maddox the drawing as we lay tangled in his sheets.

"This is what I want," I'd whispered. "Someday, when we can finally be together."

He'd traced the lines with his finger, promising, "When the time is right, Winter. This will be yours."

But now it adorned another woman's body while cameras captured her radiant smile.

My chest constricted painfully. The room began to spin, black spots dancing at the edges of my vision. I gripped a nearby column, trying to anchor myself as my lungs refused to expand properly.

"Breathe," I commanded myself silently. "Just breathe."

But oxygen seemed in short supply as Isabela turned, allowing the photographers better access to her profile. The dress hugged her curves perfectly—curves I'd once believed would someday wear my creation down the aisle toward Maddox.

"Ma'am, you really don't look well," a security guard said, appearing at my side. "Should I call someone?"

"No!" The word came out sharper than intended. "I'm fine. Just... overwhelmed by the beautiful decorations."

I forced myself to move, away from the ballroom entrance, away from the sight of my stolen future being paraded before cameras. The groom's holding room—that's where Maddox would be. I needed to see him, needed to hear him explain how this could possibly be happening.

The hallway stretched endlessly before me. Each step felt like walking through quicksand as I approached the door marked "Groom." My hand trembled as I reached for the knob.

Maddox stood alone inside, adjusting his tie in the mirror. He looked devastatingly handsome in his tuxedo, every inch the powerful CEO he'd fought so hard to become.

"Winter?" His reflection showed his shock as I stepped into the room. "What are you doing here?"

The words caught in my throat as he turned to face me, his expression shifting from surprise to something harder, more controlled.

"You're getting married," I finally managed, my voice barely audible.

He crossed the room in three long strides, gripping my shoulders. "This is a business merger," he said firmly, his eyes boring into mine. "Nothing more. Isabela's family controls shares we desperately need to stabilize the company stock."

"But the dress—"

"Is a coincidence." His fingers dug into my skin. "Now listen to me. Go home. Take your medicine. Sleep through this unpleasantness. I'll be there by midnight, and we'll talk properly then."

His thumb brushed away a tear I hadn't realized had fallen.

"I love only you," he whispered. "This changes nothing between us."

But as his lips pressed against my forehead in what should have been a comforting gesture, I couldn't help wondering how many lies had passed those same lips over the years—and how many more would follow.
