Chapter 2

I stumbled back to my apartment, my body moving on autopilot while my mind remained trapped in that hotel room, replaying Maddox's words over and over. *A business merger. Nothing more.* *I love only you.*

My hands trembled as I fumbled with my keys at the door. The lock finally clicked open, and I collapsed against the wall inside, sliding down until I hit the floor. Eight years of my life. Eight years of promises. All reduced to nothing in the span of a few minutes.

"Take your medicine," Maddox had said. "Sleep through this unpleasantness."

I pushed myself up and walked to the bathroom on unsteady legs. The amber bottle sat on the counter where it always had—vitamins, Maddox called them. My daily ritual to help with the chronic insomnia that had plagued me since we first got together.

I popped the cap with practiced ease and shook one into my palm. The small white pill felt cool against my skin as I held it under the harsh fluorescent light. Something about it caught my attention—a tiny imprint I'd never noticed before.

P11.

My brow furrowed as I turned the pill over, examining it more closely. The marking was unmistakable—not a vitamin at all, but a pharmaceutical identifier.

"Need to calm down," I whispered to my reflection in the mirror. The woman staring back at me looked ghostly pale, eyes wide with dawning horror.

Instead of swallowing it, I placed the pill on the counter and reached for my phone. My fingers flew across the screen as I searched for the code.

*P11. Prescription sedative. Strong hypnotic effect. Not recommended for long-term use due to potential for dependence and memory impairment.*

Memory impairment.

The room seemed to tilt around me as pieces clicked into place—the mornings I couldn't remember, the nights that blurred together, the way Maddox always insisted I take my "vitamins" right before bed.

"How could you?" I whispered, though no one was there to hear.

---

The botanical gardens had always been my sanctuary. The humid air of the greenhouse wrapped around me like a familiar embrace as I entered my rented space. My prize orchids stood in perfect formation, their delicate blooms nodding gently in the artificial breeze.

I checked each one methodically, looking for signs of stress or disease. This routine had saved me countless times—when the weight of secrecy became too heavy, when Maddox's promises seemed too hollow.

"These are remarkable specimens," a deep voice said from behind me.

I startled, nearly knocking over a pot of Ghost Orchids—my most prized possession.

"I'm sorry," the man said quickly. "I didn't mean to startle you."

He was tall with kind eyes behind wire-rimmed glasses. Something about him seemed inherently trustworthy—a quality I'd forgotten could exist in men.

"They're sensitive," I said softly, gesturing to the orchids. "But resilient. They survive in impossible conditions."

"Much like their caretaker, I imagine," he replied, his gaze perceptive.

I blinked in surprise. No one had looked at me—really looked at me—in years.

"Dr. Edwin Lane," he introduced himself, extending his hand. "I specialize in rare autoimmune conditions. These orchids reminded me of some of my patients—fragile but incredibly strong."

"Winter Collins," I replied, taking his hand briefly. His grip was warm and steady.

"Collins," he repeated thoughtfully. "Any relation to the Seattle Collins?"

Before I could answer, a commotion erupted near the greenhouse entrance. A flash of designer fabric caught my eye—expensive, elegant, and completely out of place among the dirt and plants.

Isabela Cruz stood framed in the doorway, her perfect silhouette outlined by the afternoon sun. Her dark eyes locked onto mine with unmistakable malice.

"Excuse me," I murmured to Edwin, moving toward my orchids. "I need to check on—"

"Such delicate creatures," Isabela said, stepping into my space with deliberate grace. "So easy to damage."

She moved closer, her heels clicking against the concrete floor. "I've always wondered what kind of woman would accept being hidden away for eight years."

My blood ran cold. "I don't know what you're talking about."

"Don't you?" Her smile was razor-sharp as she reached out to touch one of my Ghost Orchids. "The sleepy little mistress who never questioned why her lover needed her unconscious half the time?"

In one fluid motion, she knocked over my prize orchid stand. The pots crashed to the floor, soil spilling everywhere as delicate blooms crushed beneath her designer heels.

"Oh dear," she said with mock concern. "How clumsy of me."

She leaned in close, her perfume suffocating me. "Your time is up, Winter. Whatever fantasy you've been living in ends now."

As she straightened, her eyes glittered with triumph. "Did you really think he would choose someone like you over me?"
