Chapter 1

Forty minutes. I counted them off in the marble corridor of the Manhattan courthouse, my heels tapping a slow, even rhythm on the floor because if I stopped moving, I thought I might sit down right there and never get up. My dress was simple — ivory, knee-length, the kind of thing you wear when you've decided not to make a fuss about a courthouse wedding for the third time. I had told myself, standing in front of the mirror that morning, that simple meant sensible. That sensible meant safe.

My phone buzzed against the bouquet I was holding a little too tight.

*Something came up. We'll reschedule.*

I read it twice. Then a third time, waiting for the words to rearrange themselves into something else. They didn't.

A second buzz. A photo, sent to the group thread that included his assistant, his driver, and me — sent by Iliana, of course, with the caption *oops wrong chat!!* still visible at the top before I closed it. Orion's hand on her shoulder. Her mascara smudged in two neat lines down her cheeks, like she'd rehearsed the crying in a mirror before doing it for real. Her blouse a deep, wine-dark burgundy.

I looked at that color for a long time.

I want to say something cracked. That would make a better story — glass shattering, a sound you could point to. But that isn't what happened. What happened was quieter. Something in me that had been bending for five years, patiently, professionally, the way you bend over a desk at midnight to catch one more error before the market opens, simply stopped. It didn't snap. It just stopped giving.

I slid the ring off my finger. It came away easier than I expected, like it had been waiting. I set it in the center of the bouquet, white roses closing around the diamond like they were embarrassed for it, and I called my father.

He picked up on the first ring. "Cleo."

"He's not coming," I said. My voice came out flat. Businesslike. I hated how practiced that sounded.

There was a pause, and in it I heard everything my father wasn't saying — five years of things he'd swallowed for my sake. Then: "Come home. Bring nothing of his."

That night, at the kitchen table where I'd done homework as a girl, my mother set down two cups of tea and didn't drink hers, just watched me with the particular attention she reserved for moments she'd clearly been dreading. My father sat across from me, and between the three of us was a name I'd heard twice before, always in passing, always with a certain weight. Corbin Alexander.

"He's not Orion," my father said, like that was the whole pitch.

Across town, I would learn later, Orion let himself into our penthouse expecting to find me sulking on the couch, maybe with wine, maybe with tears he could smooth over with a bracelet. Instead he found the closet bare. The bookshelves stripped of my titles, his still standing in their tidy rows. My key on the kitchen counter, beside a sticky note in my handwriting.

*Don't reschedule.*

He laughed. I know because he told people this part proudly, later, as though it reflected well on him — that he'd poured himself two fingers of scotch, looked at the empty apartment, and thought: *she'll be back in a week.*

He gave me exactly one week to prove him right.

I walked into his corner office the next morning instead, resignation letter in hand, and set it on his desk without a word. He didn't even look up from his monitor.

"Another one of your dramatic bluffs, Cleo?" He signed it without reading it, the pen barely touching paper before he tossed it back at me. "Have your things out of the penthouse by Friday."

"Already done," I said.

His smirk flickered — one second, maybe less, a hairline crack in five years of certainty — before his phone rang and he turned his chair away from me entirely, already talking to someone more important. I let myself smile on the way out. It was the first real one I'd worn in longer than I wanted to admit.

Three days later I sat across from Corbin Alexander on a rooftop in the Meatpacking District, wind moving through the string lights above us, and I came prepared to negotiate terms — assets, timelines, the language of a merger dressed up as a marriage.

He didn't open with any of that.

"What's your three-year outlook on emerging markets?" he asked, like it was the most natural question in the world to ask a woman he was about to marry.

I blinked. "That's not usually the first question."

"It's the only one that matters to me." He said it simply, without performance, the way he seemed to say everything. "I've followed your analyses for three years, Cleo. You're the sharpest mind on Wall Street. Whatever arrangement we come to starts with that — not a clause in a contract."

When the food came, mine was warm. He hadn't asked how I liked it. He'd simply known, or guessed correctly, or paid attention in some way no one had bothered to in five years.

I noticed. I didn't trust it yet. But I noticed.
