Chapter 1

It was a bright Tuesday morning in downtown Manhattan.

I stood alone inside the fitting room of the bridal boutique. The wedding gown was heavy, stitched with hundreds of tiny seed pearls and layers of silk. In the full-length mirror, I barely recognized myself. The only familiar thing was the flat, green jade pendant resting right at the hollow of my throat. I had worn that pendant since my days in foster care. It was the only piece of my past I owned.

After seven years with Damon Griffin, this was supposed to be our finish line. We had survived underground boxing rings in the Bronx, freezing winters in a basement studio, and endless debt. Now he was a billionaire, and in two weeks, I would be his wife.

My chest tightened with sudden joy. I wanted him to hear it in my voice.

I grabbed my phone from the small velvet stool and dialed his private number.

It rang three times. Then the line clicked open.

"Damon?" I said, smiling. "You won't believe how the dress looks—"

I stopped.

He didn't answer. But the line wasn't quiet.

Through the small speaker, I heard the rhythmic squeak of bed springs. Then came a sharp, breathy gasp, followed by a woman’s low giggle.

My smile froze on my face. The fitting room seemed to shrink.

A moment later, Damon’s voice came through. It was rough, slightly breathless, but completely calm.

"What is it, Indie?" he asked.

There was no panic. No hurry. In the background, the woman whispered something soft and teasing.

"Where are you?" My voice came out barely louder than a whisper.

I heard him shift. A rustle of expensive sheets.

"Don't do this right now," Damon said. His tone was flat, almost bored. "Let’s be adults about this. When we get married, things will be different. We'll have an open arrangement."

"An open... arrangement?" The words felt like broken glass in my mouth.

"You’ll still be Mrs. Griffin," he said smoothly, like he was negotiating a supplier contract. "You get the penthouse. You get the black card. Be realistic, Indie. You don't have a college degree. You have no career. You don't have a dime that didn't come from my pocket. You have nowhere else to go. Be smart. Accept your position."

"Damon—"

"I have a meeting in twenty minutes. We'll talk tonight."

The line went dead.

The silence rushed into my ears like freezing water. I stood there, staring at my reflection. A woman wrapped in sixty yards of white lace, with nothing beneath it.

I reached behind my back. My fingers were stiff, but I found the zipper. I pulled it down. The dress parted. I stepped out of it and let it fall. It pooled on the carpet like a dead cloud.

I pulled on my worn jeans, my sweater, and my wool coat. I didn't glance at the gown again. I walked out past the smiling sales associate, pushed open the glass doors, and stepped into the bitter Manhattan wind.

My right hand went straight to the jade pendant at my neck. I gripped it until the hard stone bit into my palm. I didn't cry. Tears wouldn't buy me anything.

I walked three blocks without looking up. Outside a corner deli, I sat down on the edge of a concrete planter. I gave myself exactly two minutes to breathe. The exhaust fumes stung my throat. Pedestrians rushed past in heavy coats, nobody looking down.

When the two minutes were up, I stood. My mind was sharp and cold.

I walked straight to the bank on Fifth Avenue. Using our joint household card, I withdrew twenty thousand dollars—the exact maximum I could take without triggering an automated fraud alert on Damon’s phone. I asked the teller for a cashier's check.

Twenty minutes later, I walked into the gleaming glass tower of Griffin Corp.

The receptionist knew me, but her smile was tight, her eyes darting away. Everyone in this building probably already knew. I didn't care.

"I need five minutes with Scottie Moreno," I said.

She pointed me toward the executive suites on the thirty-fourth floor.

Scottie’s office had floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Central Park. She sat behind a sleek walnut desk, typing on an ultra-thin laptop. When I walked in, she didn't look startled. She simply stopped typing, folded her hands, and looked up with a slow, feline smile.

She was polished, sharp, and wore a tailored cream blazer that cost more than my entire wardrobe.

I didn't scream. I didn't throw anything. I walked to her desk, took the cashier's check from my coat pocket, and set it flat on the wood between us.

"Take it," I said, my voice steady. "And walk away from Damon."

Scottie looked at the paper. She didn't touch it. Instead, she leaned back into her leather chair and let out a soft, amused laugh.

"Twenty thousand?" she purred. "Sweetheart, Damon spent more than that on my Cartier watch last Tuesday."

"It’s your exit fee," I said. "Have some dignity."

Scottie tilted her head. Her dark eyes gleamed with pure, deliberate cruelty.

"Dignity?" she asked quietly. "Like the dignity you had four years ago in that private clinic in Westchester?"

The air left my lungs.

"The Griffin family wanted to make sure their broke little stray was clean before the engagement, didn't they?" Scottie’s voice was conversational, like she was discussing the weather. "Paper gown. Feet in the stirrups. The doctor told you to relax your hips, but you were shaking so hard you bruised. And then you locked yourself in the bathroom stall and sobbed for twenty minutes."

My knees turned to water. The blood roared in my ears.

That examination was the darkest, most humiliating afternoon of my entire life. I had never spoken of it to another living soul.

Only Damon knew.

"He tells me everything, sweetheart," Scottie whispered, watching my face crumble with cold satisfaction. "Every pathetic little detail."

She tapped her manicured nail against the desk, right next to the white paper.

The check sat between us, useless and untouched.
