Chapter 1

The sliding glass doors of the terminal parted, letting in the damp New York chill.

I paused just past the threshold, adjusting my dark sunglasses. Even across a crowded arrivals hall, three silhouettes stood out like thorns in an open field.

My older brother, Sebastian.

My supposed fiancé, Julian.

And Noah, the boy who had sworn across ten summers to always be my best friend.

They stood shoulder to shoulder in tailored wool coats, scanning the incoming travelers with impatient scowls. They hadn't changed at all. They still looked like gods carved out of privilege, convinced the world spun purely on their permission.

I gripped the handle of my single carry-on suitcase and walked forward. I hadn't set foot on this continent in three years, not since the night they stripped away whatever scraps of dignity I had left. I wasn't here to reconcile. I was here for Henry Sterling's seventy-fifth birthday banquet because my grandfather was the only person in this bloodline who had ever treated me like a human being.

Sebastian spotted me first. He stepped past the metal barrier, his tall frame cutting through the crowd.

"You finally came home," Sebastian said, his tone thick with an older brother's rehearsed authority.

"Not for long," I replied, not breaking stride. "My flight to Paris is tomorrow morning."

Julian closed the distance, blocking my path to the curb. He folded his arms over his chest, his handsome jaw set hard.

"Paris?" Julian demanded. "You just landed, Elena. We drove out here together to pick you up, and you're already talking about running away?"

"I don't remember asking for a chauffeur service," I said.

Julian frowned, his dark eyes narrowing behind his rimless glasses. "Are you still angry about Chloe?"

A sharp, humorless chuckle slipped out of my throat. I couldn't stop it.

"Still angry?" I echoed. "Is that what you call it, Julian?"

"It was three years ago," Julian snapped, stepping into my personal space. "You acted like a spoiled child, threw a tantrum at an official gala, and then vanished overseas without a word. Do you have any idea what that did to our families? To our reputation?"

"I didn't throw a tantrum," I stated, keeping my voice dead flat. "Chloe spilled a glass of red wine down the front of her own designer gown, collapsed onto the floor, and sobbed that I shoved her. I was standing five feet away from her talking to an investor."

"Nobody believed that story then, Elena," Sebastian cut in, shaking his head with an exasperated sigh. "And nobody believes it now. You've always been jealous of her."

"Jealous?" I shifted my gaze to my brother. "She was an orphan our parents sponsored for charity, Sebastian. I welcomed her into our house. I shared my clothes with her. And the second she realized crying on command got her your attention, she turned me into a monster."

"You made her feel like an outsider," Sebastian countered, his voice rising enough to draw glances from nearby passengers. "Mother and Father tried to teach you humility. You wouldn't listen."

"By locking me in a windowless storage room?" I whispered, each syllable ice-cold. "Mother and Father stood right there while you turned the deadbolt from the outside. You knew I couldn't breathe in confined spaces. You knew the panic attacks nearly put me in the hospital when I was twelve."

Sebastian flinched, but only for a fraction of a second before his jaw tightened again. "We had to keep you from causing another scene. You needed to cool off."

"I spent twelve hours screaming in the dark until my throat bled," I said. "And the three of you went back to the ballroom to drink champagne and comfort poor, fragile Chloe."

Noah finally stepped forward. Unlike Julian's arrogance or Sebastian's cold righteousness, Noah wore that familiar, soft-eyed expression of pity that I had come to despise most of all.

"Elena, listen to yourself," Noah murmured, reaching out as if to touch my arm.

I took half a step back, avoiding his fingers completely.

Noah's hand dropped, a faint hurt flickering across his features. "We just want this family whole again. Chloe has spent three years feeling guilty about your exile. She still cries whenever your name comes up."

I stared right through him. "Then maybe she should stop talking about me."

"Elena!" Julian barked, stepping directly in front of my suitcase wheels. "That is enough. You owe that girl an apology. You owe all of us an apology for walking away and leaving a mess behind."

"Move, Julian."

"No," he commanded, his chest puffed out, radiating the entitlement he had worn since prep school. "You're going to get in the car. We're going straight to the estate. You will walk into that living room, you will look Chloe in the eye, and you will say you're sorry."

"And if I refuse?"

"Apologize to Chloe," Julian said, his voice dropping into a razor-thin threat, "or I'll reconsider our engagement."

He stood tall, utterly convinced that dangling a Sterling-Vanderbilt union would bring me to my knees. He thought I was still the twenty-one-year-old girl who craved his approval, who believed his ring was a prize worth swallowing poison for.

I reached up with steady fingers, grabbed the frame of my sunglasses, and pulled them off.

My eyes locked onto his, perfectly calm. Not a tremor in my pulse. Not a tear in my eyes.

"You should reconsider it," I said clearly.

Julian froze. His mouth parted slightly, caught completely off guard. "What?"

"Break it," I told him, holding his gaze without blinking. "Call the press. Tell your father. Tell the whole city. I couldn't care less. I'd rather choke on glass than spend ten minutes sharing a roof with you."

"Elena, you're out of your mind," Sebastian hissed, grabbing my shoulder. "You don't throw away a merger like this over your wounded pride!"

"Don't touch me," I warned, yanking my shoulder from his grasp with such force that his hand slipped.

Before he could reach for me again, the sharp chime of my phone cut through the tension.

I pulled it from my trench coat pocket. The caller ID flashed brightly on the screen: *Alexander Laurent*.

A sudden warmth uncoiled inside my chest, washing away the bitter taste of the Sterling name. I swiped the screen and brought the receiver to my ear.

"Yes?" I said softly.

A deep, smooth voice resonated through the speaker, carrying the quiet, lethal confidence of a man who owned half the shipping lanes in Western Europe.

"Are you coming home tonight," Alexander asked, a trace of amusement lacing his French accent, "or are you letting those people ruin another day of your life?"

I exhaled, feeling the tight band around my ribs vanish completely.

Before I could answer, a tiny, melodic voice piped up through the receiver, shouting close to the microphone.

"Mommy! I drew the Eiffel Tower for you! Papa helped me with the glitter!"

A genuine smile broke across my face, bright and unguarded. It was a smile neither Sebastian, Julian, nor Noah had seen on me in nearly ten years.

"I love it, sweetheart," I whispered into the phone, my voice honeyed and sweet. "Keep it safe for me, okay?"

"Hurry home, Mommy!" Sophie giggled.

"I will," I promised. Then I addressed Alexander. "I'm coming home."

"The jet is fueled at Teterboro whenever you're ready," Alexander said calmly. "Don't let them keep you."

"I won't."

I ended the call, slipping the phone back into my pocket.

The three men stood paralyzed, staring at me as if I had spoken in tongues. Julian's face was flushed an ugly shade of crimson, his eyes darting between my phone and my face.

"Who was that?" Julian demanded, his voice cracking with sudden fury. "Who was that man, Elena? And who was that child calling you Mommy?"

I hoisted the handle of my luggage and took a single step past him, brushing his shoulder out of my path.

"Unlike you," I said, glancing back over my shoulder with an icy glare, "I have a family waiting for me."

I walked toward the line of yellow cabs idling under the airport lights, leaving them rooted to the pavement in stunned silence. But as the taxi pulled away from the curb, my phone buzzed with an urgent text from my grandfather's private physician:

*Elena, hurry. Your grandfather collapsed an hour ago. They're trying to change his will before tonight.*
