After His Mistress Killed Our Baby, I Disappeared Chapter 1

The night before our rehearsal dinner, I left work early. There was a small velvet box in my coat pocket. Inside were silver cufflinks I had ordered for Henrik three months ago. On the back, I'd had them engraved: 17 years. Forever yours.

I kept touching the box on the subway. My wedding dress hung in a garment bag over my arm. I wouldn't let him see the dress. Just the bag. I wanted to watch him try to guess what was inside.

Henrik Ross and I met when we were ten. I was a foster kid in Brooklyn. He was the rich Ross boy whose mother dragged him to a community event. He hated every minute of it, until he saw two older girls yank my hair. He shoved them both into a snowbank. After that, he never left.

At fourteen, he fought in underground bare-knuckle matches so I could have a winter coat. I still remember his split knuckles against my cheeks. "I'll never let anyone hurt you," he said. I believed him. I believed him for seventeen years.

The penthouse was quiet when I let myself in. Late sun turned the windows gold. His keys were on the counter. His jacket was on a chair.

"Henrik?" I called.

No answer. I walked down the hall and pushed open the bedroom door.

He was in bed. He wasn't alone.

The woman beside him sat up slowly. Blonde hair. Bare shoulders. Then she looked at me, and my whole body went cold.

Stormi Evans.

In prep school, she posted my foster records online. She shoved my head into a toilet. She was the reason I spent three nights in a hospital at sixteen. And now she was in my bed.

Stormi didn't cover herself. She just smiled. Slow. Deliberate. The same smirk from our school hallways.

Henrik didn't jump up. He didn't grab a sheet. He leaned back against the headboard like I had interrupted a phone call.

"You're early," he said.

My mouth opened. Nothing came out.

"Look, Cass." He rubbed his jaw. "It's been seven years. I've lost the spark. You should be mature enough to understand that."

"Mature," I repeated. My voice sounded far away. "Our rehearsal dinner is tomorrow."

"I know when it is."

"With her? Henrik, do you know who she is?"

"I know exactly who she is." He said it flatly. Like it didn't matter. Like I didn't matter.

Stormi tilted her head. "Hi, Cassandra. Long time."

The velvet box slipped from my fingers. It hit the hardwood with a sharp crack and popped open. One cufflink rolled under the bed.

Neither of them flinched.

I don't remember leaving. I remember the elevator. I remember the garment bag dragging on the sidewalk. I remember the doorman asking if I was okay.

That night, I called Henrik seventeen times. One for every year. He never picked up.

The next morning, a courier knocked on my best friend Nora's door. He handed me a small envelope. Inside was my engagement ring and a note in Henrik's neat, slanted handwriting.

Don't make this dramatic. We'll talk when you've calmed down.

There was no rehearsal dinner. No wedding. I sat on the floor of Nora's guest room and held the driftwood ring on the chain around my neck. Henrik carved it for me when I was fourteen, from a piece of wood we found at Coney Island. It was lopsided and rough. I squeezed it until it hurt. I waited to cry. I couldn't.

Henrik didn't call. He didn't need to. Everyone else told me what he was doing.

He took Stormi to the little Italian place on Mulberry where he first said he loved me. He took her to every restaurant we used to call ours. He brought her to parties with his arm around her waist. People I had cooked for smiled at her and raised their glasses.

Three weeks later, he moved her into the Tribeca apartment. Our marital home. I had measured every closet in that place for my clothes. Now her dresses hung there instead.

So I went to his office. I just wanted him to say it to my face.

I made it to the lobby of Ross Industries. Two security guards stepped in front of me. "Ms. Moore, we've been asked to escort you out."

"Asked by who?"

One of them glanced up. I followed his eyes. Henrik stood behind the glass wall of the conference room above. He held a coffee. He watched them walk me out. He didn't come down.

That night, it all broke. I was in Nora's bathroom when my chest locked up. I couldn't get air in. I kept seeing her smirk. Over and over. My nails dug into my arms and dragged. I didn't feel it until I saw the red lines.

With shaking hands, I blocked my number and called him. He picked up on the second ring.

I couldn't speak. I could only breathe, ragged and wet.

"Cassandra." His voice was ice. "You need actual professional help. This is exactly what I was talking about."

Click.

I sat on the cold tile and stared at the dark screen. Somewhere outside, a siren wailed, then faded.

Those words didn't sound like him. They sounded rehearsed. Like someone had told him exactly what to say.
