Chapter 7

The divorce papers were on the floor when Lucas opened his eyes.

They must have slipped from the desk while he slept. He reached down and picked them up before he was fully awake, before his brain had caught up with his hands, and then he sat up straight and looked at what he was holding and the last fog of sleep cleared completely.

Four pages.

Rachel's signature at the bottom of each one.

Rachel Everton.

Not Thompson.

He read her name twice. Then a third time. His eyes kept returning to it the way your tongue found a sore tooth not because it helped anything but because something in you needed to confirm the pain was real. The rest of the page could have been blank for all he absorbed of it. That name at the bottom was the only thing that existed in the room for a long moment.

He stood up.

"Rachel."

He said it at a normal volume first, the way you called someone you expected to be nearby. Then he walked to the bottom of the stairs and said it louder. His voice came back to him from the upper floor unchanged. No movement. No answer. Just the particular silence of a house where someone used to be.

He took the stairs fast.

The bedroom door was open. The lamp on her side still burning she had left it on, which meant she had walked out of this room with the light still going, either in a hurry or as a deliberate signal. He stood in the doorway and looked at the room from the outside before stepping in.

Her drawer beside the bed was open and empty.

Her wardrobe the left side, her side empty.

The shelf where she kept her sketchbooks and brushes, the worn ones she had carried since before she met him empty.

He walked to the center of the room slowly.

She had left the painting. The blue and gold skyline study she had made in their first year together, the one she had shown him nervously like she wasn't sure he would understand it. It was still on the wall above the dresser. He stood looking at it for a moment, trying to decide if she had forgotten it or left it on purpose, and realized he couldn't tell. That felt important somehow that after three years of marriage there were still things about her he couldn't read.

He sat on her side of the bed.

The sheets were cold. She had been gone for hours while he slept at his desk downstairs, unaware, believing she was somewhere in the house above him.

He had expected a fight.

That was the truth he sat with now. Rachel was not a dramatic person she didn't raise her voice without reason and she didn't make decisions impulsively. But she stayed. That was what he had always known about her. Through his mother's cruelty, through Fiona's return, through every hard season of their marriage, Rachel had stayed in the room. She had always been there when he turned around.

He had prepared himself for a difficult conversation this morning.

He had not prepared himself for empty drawers and cold sheets and four signed pages.

He picked up his phone.

A message from his assistant, sent forty minutes ago.

Mr. Thompson Ms. Everton settled her personal items from the household records this morning. No forwarding address on file.

Lucas set the phone down on the sheet beside him and looked at the painting on the wall for a while longer. Then he got up, took the papers back downstairs, and sat at his desk. He read every page. Her lawyer had been precise no asset claims, no financial demands, nothing extended beyond what was necessary to make it legal and final. She had not asked for a single thing from this marriage on her way out.

That was what pressed down hardest.

She hadn't wanted anything from him except to be free.

He picked up his pen and signed. All four pages. Carefully, at the correct lines, the way he signed every document that required his full attention. Then he put them in an envelope, wrote the lawyer's address on the front, and set it at the edge of the desk for his assistant to collect.

He looked at his signature beside hers.

His handwriting was controlled and angular. Hers was slightly uneven, quick, the writing of someone whose thoughts moved faster than her hand. She had pressed down hard. He could see the slight ridge in the page where the pen had gone in deep.

Signing that had cost her something.

He knew that. He just hadn't been able to stop it.

Rebecca appeared in the kitchen doorway when he came downstairs. Already dressed. Already composed. She had a way of being ready before the day required it, as though she woke each morning already oriented toward whatever outcome she was managing.

"She's gone," she said.

"Yes," Lucas said.

His mother looked at him with an expression that was arranged carefully to resemble sympathy but underneath it was something else. Something settled. Like a woman watching the final piece of a long project click into place.

"It's better this way," she said. "You know that."

Lucas said nothing.

"Fiona is already up," Rebecca added. "She made breakfast. Come and eat."

She moved back into the kitchen.

Lucas stayed where he was for a moment. Through the kitchen doorway he could see Fiona at the table her posture relaxed, her expression manufactured into gentle concern, her eyes watching him the way someone watched a situation they had personally arranged and were now monitoring for results.

He sat down.

He drank coffee.

He said nothing to either of them.

Rebecca and Fiona talked around him the way people talked around someone they had already decided was manageable. Small words. Careful cheerful sounds. Lucas heard none of it. He was thinking about Rachel pressing hard on a pen in the dark. About cold sheets. About a painting left on a wall that he still couldn't decide was an accident or a message.

His phone rang.

Private number.

He almost ignored it. Something made him answer.

A man's voice. Measured and quiet, the voice of someone who had thought carefully about every word before dialing.

"Mr. Thompson. You signed those papers this morning without knowing the full truth. Your wife didn't leave because of what she saw. She left because of something she was made to hear." A pause. "And the person who made sure she heard it has been in your house this entire time."

Lucas stood up from the table.

Fiona looked up at him.

"I'm sending you a file," the man said. "Look at it before you make another move."

The call ended.

The file came through.

Lucas opened it.

And everything he thought he understood about the last three years cracked straight down the middle.
