Chapter 5

The SUV was black. Tinted windows. Engine idling at the curb.

I was carrying groceries when it pulled up. Two men in dark suits stepped out. One of them said my name—not a question, a confirmation—and gestured toward the open door.

"Mr. Knight would like a word."

I set the bags down on the stoop. "Tell Mr. Knight I'm not interested."

The man didn't move. "He asked me to inform you that this concerns your husband's assignment in Zurich."

Something cold dropped through my chest.

I looked at the open car door. At the two men standing between me and my front door. At Sunny's face in the window, watching.

I got in the car.

---

The club was Upper East Side. Old money. The kind of place where silence cost extra. They led me through a marble lobby, up a private elevator, down a hallway lined with oil paintings of men who'd been dead for a hundred years.

The room they brought me to was small. Muted. Temperature-controlled to the degree. A single window overlooking the park. Tea service already laid out on the low table—bone china, silver spoons, steam rising from a pot I never asked for.

Barrett was seated in the chair by the window. White linen shirt. Top button undone.

I looked at him and felt nothing.

He gestured to the chair across from him. "Sit."

I stayed standing.

He smiled faintly and poured tea into both cups. "I thought we could talk like adults."

"You had me escorted here by security," I said. "That's not a conversation. That's a kidnapping."

"Dramatic." He set the pot down. "I prefer to think of it as ensuring your attendance."

I crossed my arms. "You said this was about Carson's assignment."

"It is." Barrett leaned back. His voice was calm. Unhurried. "Your husband leaves for Zurich tomorrow. Two weeks. High-stakes consulting work. He'll be working closely with Stephanie Weaver. I believe they knew each other at Georgetown."

I didn't move.

"Adjacent hotel suites," Barrett continued. "Shared car service. Late-night strategy dinners. Every possible proximity." He paused. "I've engineered the perfect conditions for infidelity. All that's left is to see if he takes the bait."

The room was so quiet I could hear my own heartbeat.

"I'm proposing a wager," Barrett said. He picked up his teacup. Didn't drink. Just held it. "If your husband stays faithful—if he comes home without touching her—I disappear. Permanently. You'll never see me again."

He set the cup down.

"But if he doesn't," he said softly, "you come back to me."

I looked at him. Really looked. Same face. Same voice. Same man who once made me feel like the center of the universe and then threw money at me like I was a bill he'd forgotten to pay.

I walked to the table. Picked up the teacup he'd poured for me. Held it for a moment—the warmth of it, the weight—and set it back down without drinking.

"You've already lost," I said quietly. "You just don't know it yet."

His expression didn't change. But something behind his eyes shifted.

I turned and walked to the door.

"Makenna."

I stopped. Didn't turn around.

"I know him better than you think," Barrett said. "I know what men do when they're alone. When they're tired. When someone who understands them is standing close enough to touch."

"You don't know Carson at all," I said.

I opened the door and walked out.

Behind me, the room went silent.

---

I drove Carson to JFK the next morning.

He was quiet in the passenger seat. Nervous, maybe. Excited. He kept checking his phone, scrolling through the project files, making sure he hadn't forgotten anything.

I parked at the departures curb and turned off the engine.

"Two weeks," he said. He reached over and took my hand. "I'll call every night."

"I know."

He looked at me. Really looked. "Are you okay?"

I nodded. Smiled. "I'm fine. Go. You're going to miss your flight."

He kissed me. Slow. Unhurried. His hand warm against my cheek.

Then he grabbed his bag and got out. I watched him walk through the automatic doors—his silhouette disappearing into the crowd, the glass reflecting nothing but sky.

I sat in the car for a long time after he was gone.

Then I drove home.

Sunny was waiting at the door. I let her out into the yard and stood on the back steps, watching her run circles in the grass.

The house felt enormous.

I went upstairs. Pulled the velvet box off the nightstand. Sat on the edge of the bed and held it in both hands.

I didn't shake it.

I just held it.

And waited.
