Chapter 3

He was still there when I came downstairs.

I'd heard the door click. I'd stood in the living room and breathed and convinced myself it was over. Then I'd gone up to check on Carson—still out cold, one arm hanging off the couch, chest rising and falling slow and even—and when I came back down for water, Barrett Knight was standing under my flea-market lamp like he owned the light it cast.

He hadn't left. He'd just moved.

He was by the window now, looking out at the street. His jacket was still on. His hands were in his pockets. He turned when he heard me on the stairs, and his expression was the same one he used in boardrooms—patient, unhurried, already three steps ahead.

"I've decided I want you back," he said.

No preamble. No apology. The same voice he used to announce acquisitions.

I stood on the bottom step and looked at him. The lamp threw warm light across the room. Behind me, Carson breathed in the dark. The wedding photo was still crooked on the mantle. Sunny lifted her head from the rug, looked at Barrett, and didn't wag.

I came down the last step.

"Your presence in my home," I said, "makes me physically ill."

He didn't flinch. He watched me the way he always watched things—like data was coming in and he was processing it.

"The version of me who would have trembled at those words," I said, "died the night you wired five million dollars to my account like severance pay." I kept my voice level. I didn't need volume. "I look at you right now and I feel nothing. Not anger. Not satisfaction. Not even the small pleasure of watching you embarrass yourself." I paused. "Just the flat discomfort of standing near something that once made me sick."

His jaw tightened. A small thing. Almost invisible.

"Get out of my house," I said.

For a moment he didn't move. He looked at me the way a man looks at a lock he expected to open and didn't. Then he straightened, slow and deliberate, and crossed to the door.

He stopped with his hand on the frame. He didn't turn around.

"You've changed," he said quietly.

"Yes," I said. "I have."

The door closed.

I stood in the middle of the room and didn't move until I heard the sound of the car door outside. Then I went to the window and stood to one side of it, out of the light, and watched.

His car was parked across the street. Black. Engine running. The headlights were off. Through the rain-blurred glass I could see the dark shape of him behind the wheel—not moving, not leaving. Just sitting.

I let the curtain fall.

I went back to Carson. Knelt beside the couch. Pressed two fingers lightly to his wrist—pulse steady, warm. He stirred and reached out without waking, the way he sometimes did, and his hand found my knee and stopped there.

I stayed until his breathing deepened again. Then I stood, went to the kitchen, and drank a glass of water standing over the sink. The tap dripped. The refrigerator hummed. Outside, the rain came down in thin, quiet sheets.

When I went back to the window, the car was still there.

I didn't check again after that.

Upstairs, I sat on the edge of the bed in the dark and pulled the velvet box off the nightstand. I held it in both hands. Didn't shake it. Just held it—the weight of it, the cool of the velvet, the faint rattle of stones settling when I tilted it slightly.

Five million dollars. Ground into dust. Kept in a box on my nightstand so I could remember what it sounded like when someone tried to buy their way out of what they'd done to you.

I set it back down.

I lay down and stared at the ceiling and listened to the rain.

He'd sat out there for twenty minutes. I knew because I heard the engine finally cut—that small, distant silence—and then nothing. He was gone.

But I knew what that silence meant. I'd watched enough of his moves to read the rhythm. The way he went still before he struck. The way a door closing wasn't an ending for him—it was just him going somewhere quieter to think.

He'd decided something out there in the dark.

I could feel it the way you feel weather coming. Not fear. Just a clear, cold knowing.

He was going to look for the bottom card. He was going to find the thing he believed was holding my happiness up—and he was going to pull it.

I reached over and pressed my hand flat against Carson's back. Felt him breathe.

In. Out. Steady.

Real.

I closed my eyes.

Let him look.
