Chapter 3

That night, Samantha couldn’t sleep. She lay awake in their bed, staring at the ceiling, the pain of betrayal cutting through her like a jagged knife. Every corner of the house seemed to remind her of Bryan—his scent on the pillow, the jacket he’d left on the couch. She couldn’t escape him.

But more than the pain of losing him, what cut deeper was the loss of herself. She had spent years building a life with Bryan, giving him her trust, her heart. And now, all of it had crumbled into dust.

But Samantha wasn’t a victim. She was strong, even if she didn’t feel it right now. She had a life to rebuild, and it wasn’t going to be easy.

The next morning, she called a lawyer.

Few weeks later

It had been two weeks since the confrontation. Two weeks since she had packed her things, moved into a small apartment, and started trying to rebuild her life. It hadn’t been easy. The grief, the anger, the sadness—it all weighed on her. But she was making progress, slowly but surely.

And then, just as she had started to find some semblance of peace, a knock on the door startled her. She opened it to find Bryan standing there, his hands shoved into the pockets of his jacket. His face was tired, worn down.

“Sam, can we talk?” he asked, his voice soft.

She stepped back, her heart sinking. The last thing she wanted right now was to hear more apologies. “I think we’ve talked enough, Bryan.”

“Please,” he begged. “I need you to hear me out. I’m not asking for you to forgive me. I’m just asking for one chance to explain. Please.”

Samantha crossed her arms over her chest. She had no idea what he could say that would make a difference, but part of her—just a small part—wanted to hear him out. She had to know.

“Fine,” she said, gesturing for him to come inside. “But this is the last time. I can’t keep doing this.”

Bryan stepped inside, his eyes searching hers as if he were looking for something, anything to hold on to.

“I know I don’t deserve your forgiveness, Sam. But I need you to understand something. Lily and I… it wasn’t what you think. We didn’t plan this. I was lost. I felt alone. You and I, we were drifting apart, and she was there when I needed someone. I never thought it would go this far. I never thought I’d hurt you. I regret it every day.”

Samantha couldn’t help but feel a pang of sympathy, but it was quickly replaced by anger. “Do you really think that’s enough?” she snapped. “Do you think telling me how sorry you are is going to fix this? I’ve spent years of my life with you, Bryan, and you threw it all away.”

He looked down, guilt washing over him again. “I know I messed up. I’ve hurt you in ways I can never undo. But I’m asking for a chance to prove that I can be the man you deserve. That I can fix this.”

Samantha’s heart twisted. She wanted to believe him. But she couldn’t let herself be blind to the truth anymore.

“You hurt me, Bryan,” she said, her voice shaking with emotion. “And you’ve hurt Lily, too. You don’t get to walk away from this and expect everything to go back to normal.”

The days that followed Bryan’s visit were a blur. Samantha tried to keep busy—work, errands, trying to reclaim the pieces of her life that had felt so shattered. But no matter how hard she tried to distract herself, her thoughts kept drifting back to Bryan. Back to the life they’d built together, the promises they’d made, and now, the destruction he had caused.

She spent hours sorting through her emotions, trying to understand if there was any way back from this. Was forgiveness possible? Could she ever trust him again? Could she even trust herself to make the right choice?

Her phone buzzed on the kitchen counter, snapping her out of her thoughts. It was an unknown number. Hesitant, she answered.

“Hello?”

“Sam,” came Bryan’s voice. It was hoarse, like he hadn’t slept in days. “I need to talk to you. In person. It’s about Lily.”

Samantha’s pulse quickened. “What about her?”

“I can’t explain over the phone,” he said urgently. “But please, you need to hear this. There’s something you don’t know. Something that changes everything.”

Her heart dropped. She wasn’t sure she was ready for any more shocking revelations, but the anxiety in Bryan’s voice urged her to hear him out.

“Fine,” she replied, steeling herself. “Where?”

“The usual café at town” he replied
