Chapter 4

The Next day they met at a small café on the edge of town. Bryan sat at a corner table, his eyes scanning the door as if expecting someone to follow him. Samantha sat down, folding her arms tightly, unwilling to show any emotion just yet.

“Okay,” she said, her voice tight. “What’s so urgent? What could possibly make me want to listen to you after everything?”

Bryan took a deep breath, his fingers tapping nervously on his coffee cup. “I’ve been trying to figure out how to say this, but it’s the truth, Sam. You’re not the only one who’s been betrayed here. Lily… she hasn’t been honest with me.”

Samantha’s brow furrowed. “What do you mean?”

Bryan looked around again, his voice barely above a whisper. “The pregnancy… it’s not mine.”

The words hit her like a slap to the face. She blinked, trying to process what he’d just said. “What?”

“Lily…” Bryan swallowed hard, his face filled with regret. “She lied. She told me she was pregnant with my child, but it’s not true. I found out recently—she’s been seeing someone else. Someone she’s been hiding from me.”

Samantha’s heart pounded in her chest. She couldn’t believe what she was hearing. All this time, Lily had manipulated both of them, playing them like puppets. The anger that simmered beneath her skin started to boil over.

“Why didn’t you tell me this sooner? And why should I believe you?” Samantha’s voice was shaking with fury. “Why did you wait until now?”

“I didn’t know what to believe, Sam!” Bryan exclaimed, leaning forward, his eyes desperate. “I didn’t know if she was lying or if I was just being paranoid. But I found out the truth. She’s been playing me this whole time, and I’m sorry. I never wanted any of this to happen.”

Samantha’s mind raced. Was this the whole truth? Or was Bryan hiding something else from her? She had always known Lily to be manipulative, but this… this was something else entirely.

“So, what now?” she asked, her voice cold. “What do you want from me?”

“I don’t know,” Bryan admitted, running a hand through his hair. “I just… I want you back, Sam. I know I don’t deserve it, but I can’t lose you too.”

Samantha stared at him, her heart a mess of conflicting emotions. She wanted to hate him, wanted to walk away, but part of her—a small part—still wanted to believe in what they had. She wasn’t sure if she could ever trust him again, but this new information about Lily, it changed things.

“I don’t know if I can forgive you, Bryan,” she said quietly, her voice thick with emotion. “I need time. I need space.”

Bryan’s face fell, but he nodded. “I understand. Take all the time you need. But I want you to know, Sam, I’ll do whatever it takes to make this right.”

For the next few days, Samantha tried to focus on herself, on healing. She stayed busy with work, with catching up on her life. But the weight of Bryan’s confession lingered. How could she even begin to trust him again? Was it possible?

Then, just as she thought she might have a handle on things, her phone rang again. The caller ID read “Lily.” Samantha’s stomach twisted in knots, but she didn’t hesitate. She picked up.

“What do you want?” she asked, her voice hard.

“I need to explain,” Lily’s voice came through, shaky and uncertain. “I know you probably hate me right now, but please, hear me out.”

Samantha’s anger flared. She wasn’t sure she could handle more lies, but she needed to know what Lily had to say.

“You’ve got five minutes,” she said, her tone clipped.

Lily sighed, a long breath escaping. “Bryan… he’s not the only one who’s been lied to. There’s something I’ve been keeping from you, Sam. Something I should’ve told you from the start.”

Samantha’s pulse stiffened. “What is it?”

Lily paused, as if gathering her courage. “I didn’t want you to know, but… Bryan’s not the only man in my life. There’s another. A man I’ve been seeing for months. And… I’m not pregnant. I lied. I don’t know why I did it, but I did.”

Samantha’s hands clenched into fists. This was it. The final betrayal.

“Why?” she whispered, her voice breaking. “Why did you do all of this, Lily?”

“I thought I could have both of you,” Lily admitted, her voice shaky. “But I was wrong. I see that now. I’m so sorry, Sam. I never meant to hurt you.”

The call ended abruptly, leaving Samantha in stunned silence.

Samantha sat frozen on her couch, the phone still gripped tightly in her hand. The conversation with Lily echoed in her mind, each word stinging more than the last. She wanted to throw her phone, to scream, to break something, but all she could do was sit there, fighting back the tears that threatened to spill.

How had it all come to this? She had once trusted Lily with her heart, with her life. And now, the betrayal was so deep, so complete, that she wasn’t sure where to go from here.

Bryan’s words came back to her—I love you, I never meant to hurt you. Did he really mean that? Or was he just a part of Lily’s twisted game? Did she even know the truth anymore?

The doorbell rang, snapping her out of her thoughts. Her heart pound as she stood up, not sure who it was. When she opened the door, behold she saw Bryan’s tired, worried face. He had been calling her nonstop for days, but she hadn’t answered. She hadn’t been ready.

“Sam,” he whispered, his voice calm. “I know you’re angry. I know you don’t trust me right now, but I need you to know the truth. I need you to understand.”

Samantha crossed her arms, her stance defensive. “The truth? Which version, Bryan? Because from where I’m standing, the truth is one big lie after another.”

Bryan flinched, his eyes pleading. “Sam, please. I swear to you, I never wanted any of this. I know I messed up, but I didn’t know about Lily’s other guy. I didn’t know about the lies. All I wanted was to fix things, to make us work again. But she twisted everything. She used me.”

Samantha’s mind was spinning. How could she even begin to make sense of this? She had given him everything—her heart, her trust—and now, it all felt like a cruel joke.

“Fix things?” she repeated bitterly. “You’ve already broken everything, Bryan. How can you fix that? How can you fix me?”

He reached for her, but she stepped back, shaking her head. “I can’t do this. Not right now.”

Bryan’s face crumpled, the weight of his guilt and regret clear in his eyes. “I’ll do whatever it takes to earn back your trust, Sam. I swear. But I need you to believe me. I didn’t know.”

Samantha’s chest tightened as she fought with herself. Part of her still wanted to believe him, still wanted to fight for their marriage. But the hurt was too fresh, too deep. “I don’t know what to believe anymore, Bryan.”

She closed the door, leaving him standing on the other side.
