Chapter 4

Thursday morning. The preschool gate.

I parked in my usual spot and unbuckled Alaia from her car seat. She clutched her lunch box—purple with butterflies—and hummed something tuneless under her breath.

"Ready, baby?"

"Ready," she said.

We walked toward the gate. The other parents were already there. Clustered near the entrance. Checking phones. Making small talk about weekend plans and soccer practice.

I stayed at the edge. Polite distance. Alaia swung my hand in hers.

Then I saw him.

Soren. Standing near the fence. Not hiding. Just there.

My grip on Alaia's hand tightened.

He stepped forward. Crossed the sidewalk. Stopped ten feet from the gate.

Then he dropped.

Not stumbled. Not collapsed. Dropped. To his knees. On the pavement.

The conversation around me died.

"Shiloh—" His voice cracked. Loud enough for everyone to hear. "Please. I know—I know what I did. I know I can't—"

I stood there. Perfectly still. My face gave him nothing.

Alaia pressed against my leg. "Mommy?"

"It's okay, baby," I said quietly.

Soren's hands were shaking. "I can't live with it. I can't sleep. I can't—" He sucked in a breath. "I will do anything. Anything. Just tell me what you need. Tell me how to fix this."

The other parents were staring now. Some at him. Some at me. A teacher stepped out from the gate, her hand on the latch, uncertain.

I looked down at Soren. His eyes were red. His face was wrecked.

I felt nothing.

"Come on, sweetheart," I said to Alaia.

I stepped around him. Wide berth. Like walking around a puddle.

Alaia followed. She looked back once. Her face was serious. Confused.

I walked her to the gate. Miss Brennan took her hand. "Morning, Alaia," she said brightly. Too brightly.

"Morning," Alaia said. She looked up at me. "Mommy, is that man okay?"

"He'll be fine," I said. I kissed her forehead. "Have a good day, baby."

"Okay." She squeezed my hand once. Then she went inside.

The gate closed.

I turned. Walked back to my car. Soren was still on the ground. Still kneeling. Watching me.

I didn't look at him.

I got in my car. Started the engine. Drove away.

In the rearview mirror, I saw the other parents stepping wide around him. Whispering. One woman had her phone out.

Good. Let them see. Let them talk.

Let him kneel.

---

I was halfway home when my phone buzzed. Unknown number. I let it ring out.

It buzzed again. Same number.

I pulled over. Answered.

"What."

"You bitch." Camille's voice. High. Shaking. "You absolute bitch."

I waited.

"He's on his knees in front of a preschool," she said. "Do you know how humiliating—"

"Then take him home," I said.

"He won't leave. He's just sitting there. Waiting for you to come back."

"That's not my problem."

"You did this to him," she hissed. "You and your—your perfect little life. Your husband. Your daughter. You ruined him."

"I didn't do anything to him," I said. "He did it to himself."

I hung up.

The phone buzzed again. I turned it off.

---

Later, Dominic texted me. Attached was a photo from a neighborhood Facebook group.

Soren. On his knees. Outside the preschool. The caption read: *Anyone know this guy? He's been here for over an hour.*

I deleted the message.

---

That afternoon, I got a call from the preschool director. Mrs. Huang. Her voice was careful. Professional.

"Ms. Walker, I wanted to reach out about this morning."

"I'm sorry about the disruption," I said.

"It's not your fault," she said quickly. "But I do need to ask—is this someone we should be concerned about? For Alaia's safety?"

"He won't hurt her," I said.

A pause. "But he might approach her?"

"No," I said. "He won't."

Another pause. Longer.

"We have protocols," Mrs. Huang said. "If this continues, we may need to involve—"

"It won't continue," I said.

I didn't know if that was true. But I said it anyway.

"All right," she said. "But if anything changes—"

"I'll let you know."

I hung up.

---

That evening, Raphael came home early. He found me in the studio. I was standing in front of a half-finished canvas. Not painting. Just standing.

He didn't ask what happened. He'd already heard. I could see it in his face.

"Alaia okay?" he asked.

"She's fine. She's with my mom."

He nodded. Crossed the room. Stood beside me.

"You want me to handle it?" he asked quietly.

"No."

"You sure?"

"I'm sure."

He studied my face. "Okay."

He pulled me close. I leaned into him. His heartbeat was steady.

"He's breaking," Raphael said.

"I know."

"That's not your responsibility."

"I know that too."

He kissed the top of my head. "Good."

We stood there. The studio was quiet. The light was fading outside.

"If he shows up again," Raphael said, "we call the cops. No warning. No conversation. Just call."

"Okay."

He pulled back. Looked at me. "I mean it, Shiloh."

"I know," I said. "Okay."

He nodded. Kissed me once. Then he went to pick up Alaia.

I turned back to the canvas. Picked up my brush.

Soren could kneel all he wanted.

I had work to do.
