Chapter 5

The call came at 4:47 p.m. Unknown number. I almost didn't answer.

But something made me pick up.

"You think you're so clever," Camille said.

Her voice was controlled. Measured. The tone she used at charity galas when someone wore the same dress.

I put the phone on speaker. Opened the recording app. Hit the red button.

"Camille," I said.

"Walking away like you're better than everyone. Like you didn't ruin everything."

I didn't respond. I watched the timer count up. Five seconds. Ten.

"You took him from me," she said. "You took everything. And now you parade around with your—your replacement family like some kind of—"

Her voice cracked. The control slipped.

"I should've been more careful five years ago," she said. "I should've made sure you stayed dead."

The words hung in the air.

I kept my face neutral. My hand steady.

"That little girl of yours," Camille continued. Her voice was different now. Sharper. "She's very cute. Purple backpack. Butterfly lunchbox. Preschool lets out at three, doesn't it?"

My chest tightened.

"You think you can just walk away?" Camille's voice rose. "You think you can steal my life and I'll just let you—"

"You're threatening my daughter," I said quietly.

"I'm telling you the truth," she hissed. "You're a thief. A ghost. You should've stayed buried. Everything you have—your husband, your house, your perfect little life—you stole it. It was never yours."

"Are you finished?"

"I'm just getting started," she said. "You have no idea what I'm capable of."

I hit the stop button. Saved the file. Checked the timestamp.

Then I hung up.

My hand was shaking. Just slightly. I set the phone down.

Alaia was at Rebecca's. Safe. Raphael was at a site meeting. I texted him: *Call me when you can. Not urgent. Just call.*

Then I scrolled through my contacts. Found the name I needed.

Rebecca answered on the second ring.

"Shiloh?"

"Mom," I said. "I need to send you something."

---

Rebecca listened to the recording twice. She didn't interrupt. Didn't ask questions until the end.

"You're sure it's her voice?" she asked.

"Yes."

"And Alaia's safe right now?"

"She's with you."

"She stays with me," Rebecca said. "Until we handle this."

"Okay."

I heard her moving. The sound of a door closing. Then her voice again, quieter.

"I'm making three calls," she said. "Security for the preschool. My attorney for documentation. And I'm booking a flight."

"You don't have to—"

"I'm coming home," she said. "I should've come sooner."

My throat tightened. "Okay."

"Shiloh." Her voice was firm. "This ends now. You understand?"

"Yes."

"Good. I'll see you tomorrow."

She hung up.

I sat there. In my studio. Surrounded by half-finished work. The light outside was fading.

I felt something loosen in my chest. Not relief. Not yet.

But something close.

---

The next morning, Dominic called at 7:15.

His voice was wrong. Too high. Too fast.

"Shiloh, don't come to the studio."

"What happened?"

"Just—don't come. I'm calling the cops."

"Dominic. What happened."

A pause. Then: "Someone broke in."

I was already moving. Keys. Jacket. Phone.

"I'm on my way," I said.

"Shiloh, it's bad—"

I hung up.

---

I saw it through the window first.

Red. Everywhere.

I pushed open the door. The smell hit me. Paint. Chemical. Sharp.

Dominic stood in the center of the room. His face was pale.

"I'm sorry," he said. "I got here and the lock was broken and—"

I walked past him.

The canvas I'd been working on for three months—the one I'd promised for the gallery show—was slashed. Four long cuts. Top to bottom.

The ceramic series on the shelf. Shattered. Pieces scattered across the floor like teeth.

And the walls. Red paint. Splashed in wide arcs. Dripping. Still wet.

I stood there. Taking it in.

Four months of work. Gone.

I felt the grief of it. Sharp. Immediate.

Then I reached for my phone.

"What are you doing?" Dominic asked.

"Calling the police," I said.

My voice was steady. Calm.

I dialed 911.

---

The officers arrived twenty minutes later. Two of them. Young. Professional.

They took photos. Asked questions. Wrote everything down.

"Any idea who might've done this?" the first officer asked.

"Yes," I said.

I pulled up the recording on my phone. Played it for them.

Camille's voice filled the studio. *That little girl of yours. She's very cute.*

The officers exchanged a look.

"We'll need a copy of that," the first one said.

"I'll send it now," I said.

The second officer walked the perimeter. Took more photos. Stopped in front of the slashed canvas.

"This is your work?" she asked.

"Yes."

She looked at it for a long moment. Then back at me. "I'm sorry."

I nodded.

"We'll file the report," the first officer said. "With the recording and the damage, we have enough for an arrest warrant."

"How long?" I asked.

"Twenty-four hours. Maybe less."

"Okay."

They left. Dominic locked the door behind them.

I stood in the center of the studio. Red paint drying on the walls. Broken ceramic under my feet.

My phone buzzed. Raphael.

*On my way. Don't move.*

I looked at the canvas. The one I'd spent months on. The one that was supposed to be in the gallery next month.

It was ruined.

But I wasn't.

I texted back: *I'm okay. Come when you can.*

Then I bent down. Started picking up the pieces.
