Chapter 3

Thursday afternoon. Preschool pickup.

I parked in my usual spot and walked toward the gate. The other parents were already clustering near the entrance, checking phones, making small talk. I stayed at the edge. I didn't know most of them well. Polite nods. The occasional comment about the weather.

The bell rang. The doors opened. Kids poured out in a noisy wave.

Alaia spotted me immediately. Her face lit up. She started running—then stopped.

Her expression changed. Confusion. Then something sharper.

I followed her gaze.

Soren stood twenty feet away. Near the fence. Hands in his pockets. Watching.

My chest tightened. Not fear. Anger.

He'd crossed a line.

I started toward Alaia. She didn't move. She was staring at Soren with that same narrow-eyed suspicion from the café.

Then I heard it. The low rumble of an engine I knew.

Raphael's car pulled up to the curb.

He stepped out. Unhurried. He moved the way he always did—steady, deliberate, like he had all the time in the world and knew exactly how to use it.

Alaia's face transformed. "Daddy!"

She ran. Raphael caught her and lifted her in one smooth motion. She wrapped her arms around his neck and buried her face in his shoulder.

"Hey, little bird," he said quietly.

He looked at me over her head. His eyes asked the question.

I glanced at Soren. Back to Raphael. A small nod.

Raphael's expression didn't change. He shifted Alaia to one hip and crossed to me. His free hand settled at the small of my back. Warm. Steady.

"You okay?" he asked.

"Yeah."

He kissed my temple. Then he turned.

Soren hadn't moved. He was still standing by the fence. Staring.

Raphael walked toward him. Not fast. Not slow. Just walking.

I stayed where I was. Alaia peeked over Raphael's shoulder at me. I gave her a small smile. She didn't smile back. She was watching everything.

Raphael stopped a few feet from Soren. He didn't say anything at first. Just looked at him.

The silence stretched.

Soren broke first. "I wasn't—I didn't mean to—"

"You're the one who's been following my wife," Raphael said.

Not a question. A statement.

Soren's jaw tightened. "I just wanted to talk to her."

"She doesn't want to talk to you."

"That's not—"

"She's made that very clear." Raphael's voice was calm. Mild. The kind of tone you'd use to explain something obvious to someone who'd missed it the first time. "Multiple times. In multiple locations. You're still here."

Soren looked past him. At me. "Shiloh—"

"Don't," Raphael said.

The single word cut through the air like a door closing.

Soren's eyes snapped back to him. "I'm not trying to cause trouble. I just—"

"You're standing outside our daughter's preschool." Raphael shifted Alaia slightly. She tightened her grip on his neck. "That's trouble."

"I didn't know you'd be here. I thought—"

"You thought you'd wait for Shiloh alone." Raphael's expression didn't change. Still calm. Still mild. "That's worse."

Soren opened his mouth. Closed it.

Raphael stepped closer. Not aggressive. Just closer.

"I'm Raphael Cox," he said. "Shiloh's husband. Alaia's father. And you need to leave."

The words landed like stones in still water.

Soren stared at him. Something moved behind his eyes. Recognition. Defeat.

"I'm not trying to—" His voice cracked. "I just need her to know—"

"She knows," Raphael said. "Whatever you think you need to say, she already knows. And she's moved on."

He turned. Walked back to me. Alaia's face was still pressed against his shoulder.

I met his eyes. He didn't ask if I wanted to leave. He just waited.

I nodded.

We walked to the car together. Raphael buckled Alaia into her seat. I slid into the passenger side. He closed my door. Rounded the car. Got in.

In the rearview mirror, I saw Soren. Still standing by the fence. Watching us drive away.

He looked smaller than I remembered.

---

That night, after dinner, after Alaia's bath, after the bedtime story and the tucking-in and the three goodnight kisses she required before sleep, I found Raphael in the kitchen.

He was washing dishes. The warm light over the sink turned the soap bubbles gold.

I leaned against the counter. "I need to tell you something."

He glanced at me. Nodded. Kept washing.

I told him about the cemetery. The café. The week of sightings. I kept my voice even. Factual. I didn't perform distress. I just gave him the information.

When I finished, he set the plate he'd been washing in the drying rack. Dried his hands. Turned to face me.

"Are you safe?" he asked.

The question was simple. Direct.

"Yes," I said.

He studied my face. "You're sure."

"I'm sure."

He nodded slowly. "Okay. Then we'll deal with it."

Not *I'll* deal with it. *We'll*.

I felt something loosen in my chest.

"I should've told you sooner," I said.

He shook his head. "You told me when you were ready. That's how this works."

He crossed to me. Pulled me close. I leaned into him. His heartbeat was steady under my ear.

"If he shows up again," Raphael said quietly, "we call the police. Document everything. Get a restraining order if we need to."

"Okay."

"And if you feel unsafe—at any point—you tell me. Immediately."

"I will."

He kissed the top of my head. "I'm not going to let anything happen to you. Or Alaia. You know that, right?"

I nodded against his chest.

I did know. That was the difference.

Raphael didn't make promises he couldn't keep. He didn't perform protection. He just showed up. Every time. Without hesitation.

That was everything.
