Chapter 5

"Give me that!"

Liam lunged forward and snatched the shredded scrap of tulle right out of the boutique manager's hands.

"Sir, please," the manager warned, taking a quick, defensive step back to protect the remaining inventory.

Liam ignored her entirely. He shoved the ruined, frayed lace directly toward my face, his knuckles white with tension. "Do you think this proves something? Do you honestly think a rented luxury car and a piece of fake plastic terrify me?"

"The terminal approved the charge," I pointed out, my voice smooth and unbothered.

"A cheap parlor trick," Liam spat, his chest heaving. "You probably stole that card from one of my wealthy clients. Or you bought a prop online just to stage this pathetic little performance."

"Fifty-five thousand dollars is a very expensive prop, Liam."

"You do not have fifty-five dollars, Cora! You are bankrupt!"

Maya stepped out from behind his shoulder, fiercely clutching the lapels of her plush robe. Her tears had vanished, replaced by a venomous sneer. "She is just jealous, Liam. She wants to ruin my moment because she knows exactly who I really am."

"Who are you, Maya?" I asked, tilting my head slightly.

"I am the woman replacing you," she bragged, lifting her chin.

Liam reached frantically inside his ruined suit jacket. He dug his fingers deep into the breast pocket and yanked out a thick, heavy cream-colored envelope.

"You want to play high society?" Liam barked, his face flushing a deep, angry red. "Let me show you what real wealth actually looks like."

He whipped his arm forward.

The heavy cardstock flew directly at my face like a projectile. I did not blink. I did not raise my hands to block it.

The razor-sharp corner of the stiff envelope sliced quickly across my left cheekbone.

A sharp, hot sting flared instantly across my skin.

The envelope hit the polished marble floor with a dull thud.

"Liam!" the manager gasped in pure shock, clapping a hand over her mouth.

"Quiet," Liam snapped at the older woman, silencing her instantly. He pointed a shaking, aggressive finger at the envelope resting on the floor. "Pick it up, Cora."

I stood perfectly still.

A single drop of warm blood welled up on the fresh cut on my cheek, tracking a slow, agonizing path down my skin.

"I said pick it up," Liam repeated, trying to assert dominance over the room.

"What is it?" I asked, completely ignoring his command.

"An invitation," Liam declared, his chest puffing out proudly. "To my wedding."

"We are not divorced yet."

"We will be by Friday. And on Friday night, I am marrying the true heiress of Vanguard."

I stared at him. A dead, heavy silence fell over the boutique.

Maya lifted her chin even higher, a smug, victorious smile stretching across her heavily contoured face.

"Vanguard," I repeated the name slowly, tasting the sheer weight of the lie on my tongue.

"That is right," Liam sneered, mistaking my pause for defeat. "Maya's family owns Vanguard Holdings. Real, untouchable money. Not the pathetic shell game your loser father ran before he went under."

A short, sharp laugh escaped my throat before I could stop it.

Liam frowned, his bravado faltering for a fraction of a second. "What is so funny?"

"You," I said, looking him up and down with absolute pity. "You genuinely believe you are marrying the heiress of Vanguard."

"We booked the St. Regis," Maya interrupted, her voice shrill with manic excitement. "The entire grand ballroom. Five hundred elite guests. The mayor is coming."

"The St. Regis," I echoed. "A very difficult venue to secure on such short notice."

"Not when your last name is Vanguard," Maya bragged, tossing her messy hair over her shoulder. "The general manager practically kissed my shoes when I called."

"Did he?" I asked softly.

"He cleared the entire schedule for us," Liam added, eager to drive the knife deeper. "Bumped a massive corporate gala just to accommodate Maya's personal request."

"That must have cost an absolute fortune," I noted, watching his face closely.

"Money is irrelevant now," Liam said, straightening his suit jacket. "Maya's family covered the deposit. Five hundred thousand dollars in cash."

I tilted my head, calculating the numbers. A half-million-dollar deposit. Maya certainly did not have that kind of money. Liam must have stolen the funds from the holding company right before I froze the accounts this morning.

He was literally funding his own fake heiress's wedding using my family's money.

"A very generous family," I said.

"Something you know absolutely nothing about," Liam shot back. He crossed his arms over his chest, looking down at me. "It is a strict black-tie event. But they always need extra help in the kitchen. You can come pass out champagne to my guests. I will even tip you."

I lowered my gaze to the floor. The cream envelope sat pristine and arrogant against the gray-veined marble.

I bent my knees slowly. My fingers closed around the thick, heavily textured paper. I stood back up and pulled the invitation free from the unsealed flap.

Heavy gold foil caught the bright showroom lights, practically glowing.

*You are cordially invited to celebrate the union of Liam Sterling and Maya Vanguard.*

I pressed my right thumb directly over Maya’s fake last name. I pushed my nail hard into the gold lettering, scraping the foil until it dulled and flaked away.

"Maya Vanguard," I said aloud, the name sounding absurd in the quiet room.

"Do not touch it with your dirty hands," Maya snapped, taking a step forward.

"Did you show him your actual birth certificate, Maya?" I asked, my eyes piercing through her facade.

"I do not have to prove anything to you!" she shouted, her voice jumping an octave.

Liam stepped immediately in front of her again, eagerly playing the role of the fierce protector. "She does not need to prove anything to anyone. Her trust fund clears on Friday, right after we say our vows at the altar."

"Her trust fund," I murmured.

"A hundred million dollars," Liam bragged, his eyes gleaming with sheer greed. "That is what she brings to this marriage. What did you bring, Cora? A broken family and a mountain of unpaid debt."

"I brought you three years of unquestioned loyalty," I said, my voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "And you threw it in a garbage disposal."

"You threw a flawless ring in the disposal!" Maya yelled from behind him.

"I threw away the trash," I corrected.

I turned the heavy cardstock over in my hands.

"Keep it," Liam told me, waving a dismissive hand. "Pin it to the wall of whatever cheap motel you end up sleeping in tonight. Let it remind you of exactly what you lost."

"I did not lose anything."

"You lost me," Liam stated with absolute certainty.

"That is exactly my point."

I slid my thumb slowly across the back of the envelope. My skin hit a thick, raised bump right in the center of the paper. A heavy circle of crimson wax sealed the back of the invitation.

"The St. Regis demands absolute perfection," Liam bragged, noticing my intense focus on the seal. "They custom-stamp every single envelope for their elite clients. You have probably never seen real wax before."

I stared at the embossed pattern pressed deeply into the red wax.

A grand shield. Two crossed swords. A roaring lion crowned with a heavy wreath of thorns.

The official, unmistakable crest of the St. Regis hotel ownership group.

"It is a beautiful stamp," I said quietly.

"It represents a legacy you will never be able to touch," Liam fired back. "Now get out of this store. You are ruining Maya's appointment."

"I already bought the dress," I reminded him. "The appointment is over."

I did not look up at him. My eyes remained locked onto the crimson seal.

I raised my right hand.

A heavy, antique platinum signet ring rested securely on my thumb. I had worn it every single day of my marriage. Liam had always complained about it, calling it a piece of ugly, outdated costume jewelry. He had demanded I take it off for our wedding photos. I had flatly refused.

I pressed my thumb directly over the red wax.

The engraved metal of my ring slotted perfectly, flawlessly, into the raised ridges of the seal. The shield. The swords. The crowned lion.

A flawless, exact match.

I traced the edge of the cold metal, a sharp, icy smile finally forming on my lips.

My family owned Vanguard. My family owned the St. Regis.

And on Friday, my arrogant, thieving husband was going to find out exactly who he was trying to replace.
