Chapter 2

"Sign it," Liam commanded again.

The cold metal barrel of the Montblanc pen pressed painfully into my palm. His grip on my wrist tightened, the pressure threatening to snap my fragile bones.

"Let go of my arm," I warned.

"Not until you sign the papers."

"You really want my signature?" I asked, my voice dropping to a dead calm.

"I want you out of my house."

I wrenched my arm free with a violent twist. I opened my fingers wide and let the heavy pen drop. It clattered sharply against the marble island, spun in a frantic little circle, and rolled off the edge to hit the floor with a hollow thud.

Liam glared at the expensive pen resting on the tile, then shifted his furious gaze back to me. "Are you throwing a tantrum now?"

"No," I replied. "I am taking out the trash."

I turned my back on him and walked straight to the stainless-steel sink built into the far counter.

"Where are you going?" Maya whined, her high-pitched voice grating against my ears. "Liam, she is acting crazy."

I gripped the edge of the cold metal basin. Raising my left hand, I examined the three-carat diamond resting on my ring finger. It caught the morning sunlight streaming through the window, sparkling with a blinding, utterly hypocritical brilliance.

"Three years," I muttered to myself. "What a complete waste of time."

"Cora," Liam warned, taking a step toward me, his expensive leather shoes squeaking slightly on the tile. "Pick up the pen."

I grabbed the platinum band. It stuck for a second, stubborn and tight, before sliding painfully over my knuckle.

"Do you know how much that ring cost?" Liam barked. "Put it down on the counter."

"It is yours," I said, holding it over the basin. "Keep it."

I flicked my wrist. The heavy diamond tumbled down the dark, narrow hole of the sink drain.

"No!" Maya shrieked. "That is a flawless diamond!"

I reached up and slammed the heel of my hand against the wall switch.

The garbage disposal roared to life. A terrifying, ear-splitting screech erupted from the depths of the basin. Platinum and diamond violently clashed against the rapidly spinning steel blades. The mechanical grinding entirely drowned out Maya’s panicked screams.

The heavy machinery vibrated beneath the counter. The entire kitchen island shook under my hands, but I did not let go of the switch. My shoulders locked into a rigid line. Every muscle in my arms strained against the violent tremors. Thick blue veins popped against the pale skin on the back of my hands as I held my ground.

Metal shards and dirty water spat upward from the drain in a chaotic, ugly fountain. A foul spray flew across the space, hitting the front of Liam’s custom Italian suit.

He stumbled back two full steps, throwing his hands up. "Turn that off!"

His face turned a furious, ashen gray. He swiped frantically at the wet stains ruining his silk lapels, his perfectly crafted composure completely shattering. "Are you out of your mind?" he yelled over the mechanical squealing.

I let the steel blades chew the jewelry for five more seconds. Then, I hit the switch.

Silence slammed back into the room, heavy and ringing in my ears.

I turned around to face them. Maya stood paralyzed behind Liam, her hands clamped tightly over her ears, her eyes wide with genuine shock.

I closed the distance between us before either of them could fully recover their senses.

"Hey!" Liam shouted, trying to block my path.

I bypassed him entirely, dipping my shoulder to lunge directly at Maya. My fingers hooked securely around the thick gold chain resting against her collarbone.

"Get off me!" she cried, batting uselessly at my wrists.

I yanked hard.

The delicate gold clasp snapped instantly against the force. The ruby clover pendant swung wildly as it came free, safely enclosed inside my fist.

Maya stumbled backward, clutching her red, irritated throat. "She scratched me! Liam, call the police!"

"You belong in an asylum," Liam sneered. He pulled Maya behind him, shielding her with his broad body as if I were a wild animal.

"And you belong in the gutter," I replied, my voice steady.

I walked back to the kitchen island. The divorce settlement still sat there, pristine and demanding, silently mocking the three years I had poured into this fraudulent family. I placed my hand flat against the edge of the thick stack of papers.

"Do not touch those," Liam ordered, taking a threatening step forward. "My legal team spent weeks drafting those terms."

"Then they can spend another week reprinting them."

With one hard, sweeping motion, I shoved the entire pile off the marble. The pages fluttered wildly through the air, separating into a messy white cloud before landing directly into the open trash can, settling right on top of Liam's discarded paper towel.

"You are testing boundaries you do not understand," Liam said. His voice grew dangerously quiet, laced with a venomous threat.

"I understand perfectly," I told him, looking him dead in the eye. "My lawyer will contact yours."

"You do not have a lawyer!" he shot back, a cruel smile returning to his face. "You have nothing! If you walk out that door, you get zero. I will completely destroy your life."

"You already tried."

I pulled a small, clear plastic sandwich bag from the countertop dispenser. I dropped my mother's ruby necklace inside, sealed the top securely, and shoved it deep into my jeans pocket.

"Leave your house keys," Liam demanded, extending an open palm.

I dug into my other pocket, pulled out the silver ring holding my keys, and tossed them blindly over my shoulder. They hit the kitchen tile with a sharp, final jingle.

I turned my back on my husband and walked out of the kitchen.

I did not grab a coat. I did not pack a bag. I just kept walking straight through the massive foyer, my shoes making absolutely no sound on the hardwood floors I had painstakingly restored with my own hands.

I pushed open the heavy oak front door and stepped outside.

The crisp morning air hit my face, instantly cooling the hot flush of anger radiating from my cheeks. I stepped onto the expansive circular driveway, the expensive white gravel crunching softly beneath my feet.

A low, powerful engine purred in the distance, a deep vibration that cut through the quiet neighborhood.

A massive, midnight-black Rolls-Royce glided smoothly up the driveway, coming to a silent halt right in front of me. The polished front grille gleamed in the morning sunlight, casting a harsh, blinding reflection across the pavement.

My eyes darted to the license plate.

It was not a standard state issue. It carried a solid gold emblem—a privileged, high-council tag that money alone could never buy. Only the absolute elite of the city, the true untouchables, possessed plates like that.

I froze in my tracks, my hand still resting on the strap of my purse.

The tinted rear window began to hum softly as it rolled down, revealing the shadows inside.
