Chapter 4

Elianna finds out over breakfast. The text comes from her investigator while she's stirring honey into her tea. Beckett has located the woman in Brooklyn. The woman is Vivienne Carter. Elianna sets down her spoon very carefully.

She calls Beckett that afternoon. Her voice is warm. Concerned. She asks if he's okay. She says she heard he's been spending time in Brooklyn. She doesn't ask why. She just lets the silence stretch until he fills it.

"I found her," he says.

"Oh." Elianna's tone shifts—just enough. A thread of worry beneath the warmth. "Beckett, are you sure that's wise? Reopening old wounds... it won't change what happened."

"I need to know where Lily is," he says. His voice is tight. "She won't tell me."

Elianna closes her eyes. She's standing in her apartment overlooking the Hudson. The light is perfect. Everything in her life is perfect. Except this.

"Maybe that's for the best," she says gently. "Maybe some things are better left alone."

He doesn't respond. She can hear him breathing.

"I'm worried about you," she continues. "This woman—she hurt you. She lied to you. Going back to her now... it's just going to hurt you all over again."

"I know," Beckett says. But he doesn't sound convinced. He sounds like a man standing at the edge of something he can't see.

Elianna ends the call with promises to check in soon. Then she makes another call. Her investigator answers on the first ring.

"I need to know what she knows," Elianna says. "And I need to know who's helping her."

The report comes back three days later. A psychologist named Desmond Torres has been making inquiries. Hospital records from four years ago. Cemetery records. Legal filings related to the Hughes family. The investigator's notes are thorough. Detailed. Damning.

Elianna reads them twice. Then she sits very still in her chair. Her hands are folded in her lap. Her face shows nothing.

But inside, something is moving. Fast and sharp and cold.

She begins making calls.

The charity gala is at the Metropolitan Club. Elianna wears white—a calculated choice. She moves through the crowd with practiced grace, stopping to speak with the right people. She mentions, casually, that she heard Beckett ran into an old acquaintance in Brooklyn. Someone from his past. She doesn't name Vivienne. She doesn't have to.

By the time Beckett arrives, the story has already circulated. Three separate people approach him to ask—with varying degrees of tact—whether it's true he's been in contact with "that woman" again. One of them, an older society matron who has known the Hughes family for decades, leans close and says she hopes he's being careful. That some people never change.

Beckett's jaw tightens. He scans the room and finds Elianna near the bar. She's laughing at something a city councilman just said. She looks radiant. Unbothered.

He doesn't approach her. But he feels the shape of what she's done.

The gossip column runs two days later. It's a small item buried in the back pages of a Manhattan lifestyle magazine. Just a few lines about a "disfigured woman" reportedly harassing a prominent billionaire family in Brooklyn. No names. Just enough detail to plant the seed.

Vivienne doesn't see it. She doesn't read those magazines. But other people do. And the story begins to take root in the same social circles that destroyed her three years ago.

The summons comes through a lawyer. A meeting request. Professional. Formal. The address is a midtown office building. Vivienne recognizes the tactic. Beckett wants neutral ground.

She arrives at two in the afternoon. The lobby is all glass and marble. A receptionist directs her to the fourteenth floor. She takes the elevator alone.

Beckett is waiting in a conference room. He's standing by the window when she enters. He turns. Their eyes meet.

Vivienne doesn't sit. She stands just inside the door with her hands at her sides.

"Thirty seconds," she says.

Beckett blinks. "What?"

"That's what you get. Thirty seconds."

He steps toward her. His expression is raw. Unguarded. "I know what I did," he says. The words come fast. Urgent. "I know Lily is gone. I know I—" His voice catches. "I'm not asking for forgiveness. I know I don't deserve that. I just want to make your situation less unbearable. Whatever you need. Money. Housing. Medical care. Anything."

Vivienne looks at him. Her face is still. Empty.

"Nothing you do in this life or the next makes it less unbearable," she says. Her voice is quiet. Flat. "You used your thirty seconds."

She turns and walks out.

Beckett stands in the conference room. The door clicks shut. The sound echoes in the empty space.

He sinks into a chair. His hands are shaking. He presses them flat against the table. The wood is cold and smooth.

He doesn't understand. Not yet. But the crack in his chest is widening. And somewhere deep in the architecture of his certainty, the first stone has begun to shift.
