Chapter 5

I walk home from the midtown office building instead of taking the train. The air is sharp. My coat is thin. I don't feel the cold the way other people seem to.

His face keeps surfacing behind my eyes. Not the cruelty of it. The crack in it. The way his hands went to the table like he needed something solid to hold him up.

I don't feel sorry for him.

I stop at a corner and wait for the light. A woman beside me is holding a small girl's hand. The girl is maybe four. She's swinging her mother's arm and singing something under her breath. I look at the pavement.

The light changes. I cross.

When I get home, I sit on the edge of my bed without turning on the lamp. I don't cry. I haven't in three years. I just sit there with my hands folded in my lap, the way I've learned to sit with grief—patiently, the way you sit with a difficult guest who lives in your house.

Somewhere across the river, I know he is sitting too. I know because I felt it in the conference room. The shape of a man who has begun to suspect his own foundation is hollow.

Let him sit with it.

***

Beckett doesn't drink the scotch.

He pours it and sets it on the low table by the window and forgets it. The ice melts. The amber goes pale. He sits in the chair he has taken to sleeping in and stares at the city.

*She's where you put her.*

He has turned the sentence over so many times the edges have worn smooth. He has tried to make it mean what he wants it to mean—a taunt, a hiding place, a location he can extract from her by pressure or by money. But the sentence refuses. It sits in him like a swallowed stone.

He reaches for his phone at eleven-forty. His attorney, Marcus, picks up on the second ring, groggy.

"Beckett. It's late."

"I need every record connected to Lily Hughes. Medical file. Hospital admissions. Diagnostic reports. Anything from four years ago."

A pause. "Beckett—"

"Tonight."

"That's not—there are chains of custody, subpoena requirements, the hospital's legal team will—"

"I don't care how you do it." His voice is quiet. Level. "Tonight, Marcus."

He ends the call and sets the phone face-down on the table. The city outside the window is a grid of small yellow lights. He watches them until they blur.

***

Across town, Desmond Torres closes the last folder in a stack that has taken three years to assemble.

His office is quiet. A single lamp burns on the desk. Claire went home hours ago. The evidence is arranged in the order he intends to present it: the DNA report, traced through a paper trail to a laboratory technician who took three separate wire transfers from a shell entity owned by Richard Hughes's private holding company. Elianna's private ledger—recovered through the investigator she had trusted for a decade, a man whose conscience finally outweighed his fee. Hospital records confirming Lily's bone marrow match, the scheduled transplant, the operating room reserved, the anesthesia team briefed.

And Elianna's own physician's call log. Time-stamped. The fabricated cardiac emergency initiated at 6:47 a.m. The transplant window officially closed at 7:15.

He saves the death certificate for last. He does not need to read it again. He has read it perhaps a hundred times, in the middle of the night, in the mornings, in the quiet moments between sessions.

*Lily Hughes. Cause of death: complications from acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Age at death: four years, seven months.*

He closes the folder.

He sits with his hand on the cover for a long moment. He thinks of Vivienne. Not with longing. With something older and steadier—the accumulated weight of three years of watching her survive.

Then he picks up his phone and dials Beckett Hughes's direct line.

It rings twice.

"Who is this?"

"My name is Desmond Torres," Desmond says. "I have information about your daughter. If you want the truth, come to the address I'm about to send you. Tonight."

There is a silence on the other end. Not confusion. Something else. A recognition.

"Send it," Beckett says.

***

Beckett is already in the back of the car when Marcus calls back.

The attorney's voice is careful. Too careful. The kind of careful that means a man is trying not to say what he has already found.

"Beckett. I have the records."

"And?"

"There's—there's an anomaly. The DNA testing four years ago. It was processed at a laboratory called Meridian Diagnostics. I ran the ownership chain." A pause. "Meridian had a contract with a subsidiary of your grandfather's private holding company. The contract was terminated eleven months later. The technician of record retired to Florida."

Beckett doesn't answer.

"Beckett. Are you there."

"I'm here."

"I want to be clear that this is preliminary. There may be an innocent explanation. Laboratories change hands—"

"Marcus."

"Yes."

"Stop talking."

He ends the call. He rests his forehead against the cool glass of the window. The city slides past in streaks of light and dark. His driver takes the turn Desmond's message indicated.

He does not know yet what he is driving toward. But somewhere beneath his ribs, a certainty he has carried for four years is beginning to come apart at the seams, and he can feel the shape of what lies underneath, and it is a shape he does not want to see.

The car pulls to the curb. Beckett gets out. The door of the building is open, and a man in a dark coat is waiting on the steps, holding a folder.
