Chapter 2

The call came at 7:14 in the morning.

I was in the hospital cafeteria, both hands around a coffee I hadn't touched, when the transplant coordinator's number lit up my screen. I picked up before the second ring.

"Ms. Hayes." A pause. The kind that means something. "I need to inform you of a change regarding Oaklyn's scheduled procedure."

The coffee cup was warm against my palm. I focused on that.

"The donor match has been reassigned to a higher-priority case. An adult patient whose family secured an expedited transfer through—"

"No." My voice came out flat. "That's not possible. We've been registered for months. The surgery is in three days."

"I understand this is—"

"Who authorized this?"

Another pause. "The decision came from the administrative level. I'm so sorry, Ms. Hayes. I truly am."

I set the coffee cup down. Carefully. "I want to speak to the administrator. Today."

"Of course. I'll—"

"Now."

I spent the next six hours on the phone.

The administrator. His supervisor. The hospital's patient advocacy office. A transplant attorney whose number Diana had found for me two weeks ago and I'd hoped I would never need. I filed an emergency appeal at noon. I filed a second one at three. I used words like *legal action* and *documented negligence* and *my daughter is nine years old*, and every voice on the other end of the line was measured and sorry and immovable.

The decision came from above. It was final.

I went back to Oaklyn's room at five o'clock. She was asleep. I sat in the chair beside her bed and watched her breathe and did not let myself think about the words *higher-priority case* or *significant financial backing* or *final*.

I thought about three days. I thought about the stairwell where I'd sat with both hands around my phone and let myself exhale for the first time in months.

I thought about how I had told myself I was allowed to hope.

---

I didn't sleep that night. Or the next.

I worked the phones from the family lounge at the end of the hall, the one with the flickering overhead light that nobody had fixed in the three weeks I'd been haunting it. I called registries. I called the coordinator again. I called the attorney twice and left messages both times. I drafted emails I knew wouldn't be answered before morning and sent them anyway.

At some point around 2 a.m. on the second night, Diana texted: *Anything I can do.*

I stared at the message for a long time. Then I typed back: *No. Thank you.*

There was nothing anyone could do. That was the shape of it.

---

Lucas called on the second afternoon. It was the obligatory kind of call—short, a little stiff, the kind he'd been making since Garrett took him and the distance between us became something we both pretended wasn't there.

"Hey," he said.

"Hey, baby." I moved to the window. "How are you?"

"Fine." A pause. "How's Oaklyn?"

"Stable. Resting."

Another pause. I could hear something in the background—dishes, maybe, or a TV. The comfortable sounds of Garrett's apartment.

"That's good," Lucas said. Then, like it was nothing: "Sylvia was saying at dinner last night that the procedure got moved up. For her dad. She seemed pretty relieved."

I didn't say anything.

"Mom?"

"I'm here." My voice was steady. It was always steady. "That's good for her family."

We talked for another two minutes. He said goodbye. I said I loved him. The call ended.

I stood at the window and looked at the parking lot below.

The procedure got moved up.

I let the words sit there. I didn't reach for them yet. I just let them exist in the same space as everything else I knew—the timing, the financial backing that had come from nowhere, Garrett's silence, the administrator's voice saying *the decision came from above*, Sylvia's face at the edges of every conversation Garrett had stopped having with me.

I pressed my left wrist against the cold glass.

The picture assembled itself slowly. Piece by piece. The way terrible things do when you already know the shape of them but your body needs a moment before it will let your mind say it out loud.

Sylvia's father.

Garrett's money.

Oaklyn's match.

I stood there until my wrist went numb from the cold. Then I turned away from the window and walked back down the hall toward my daughter's room.

I didn't cry. There was no room for it yet.

I pushed open the door. Oaklyn was awake, her IV line arranged carefully over the rail, her eyes finding mine the moment I stepped inside.

"Hey, Mama."

"Hey, baby."

I sat on the edge of her bed and took her hand. Her fingers were cool and small and real.

I held on.
