Chapter 3

I drove to Garrett's building without deciding to.

One moment I was sitting in the family lounge with the flickering light. The next I was on the freeway, both hands on the wheel, the city sliding past in the dark.

The lobby was all glass and polished stone. A security desk, a fountain that made no sound. Garrett was coming out of the elevator when I walked in—suit jacket over one arm, phone in hand—and he stopped when he saw my face.

I didn't raise my voice. There was no point.

"Did you redirect Oaklyn's donor match to Sylvia's father?"

He looked at me for a long moment. Then he looked away, toward the fountain.

"Ira's condition is time-sensitive," he said. "The window was closing. Sylvia—she never asks for anything, Marina. Not once since all this started. And Oaklyn is young. Her body is strong. Another match will come—"

"How long?"

"These registries turn over constantly. Weeks, maybe. A month at most—"

"How long did you know?"

He stopped.

I watched his jaw tighten. I watched him choose a word and put it back and choose another. I had spent eleven years learning to read that face, and what I read now was not guilt. It was the particular expression of a man who has already decided his reasons are sufficient and is waiting for the conversation to end.

"Sylvia came to me two weeks ago," he said. "She asked once. Just once. I made a decision."

"You made a decision."

"Marina—"

"I heard you."

I turned and walked back through the glass doors.

I made it to the highway before I pulled over. I sat on the shoulder with my hazards blinking and my hands in my lap and the sound of passing cars moving through me like wind through something hollow.

Forty minutes. Maybe more.

Then I drove back to the hospital.

---

Dr. Shen found me in the corridor outside Oaklyn's room the next morning. She had the look she'd been carrying for weeks—the careful, exhausted look of someone who has been fighting alongside you and is about to tell you the ground has shifted again.

"There's no secondary match," she said. "I've checked every registry we have access to. I've called in every contact I have."

I nodded.

"There is one option." She held my eyes. "An emergency intervention. It's not a transplant—it's a bridge procedure. Aggressive. It could buy us time, or it could—" She stopped. Started again. "The probability of success without the marrow is low, Marina. I have to be honest with you."

"How low?"

She told me.

I stood very still. The hallway moved around me—a cart, a nurse, the distant sound of a monitor.

"Do it," I said.

---

They let me stay with her until the anesthesia.

Oaklyn was in a good mood, which was the thing about her that had always broken me open a little—the way she could be generous with her mood even when her body was failing her, like she was trying to make it easier for everyone around her.

"Will it hurt?" she asked.

"No, baby. You'll just sleep."

"And when I wake up?"

"I'll be right here."

She considered this. Then she reached up—same two fingers, same deliberate care—and touched my cheek.

"You always are," she said.

I held her hand while the anesthesiologist worked. I felt the exact moment her grip went soft. I sat with the weight of her fingers in my palm and memorized it—the temperature, the smallness, the specific way her thumb curved slightly inward when she was relaxed.

I memorized it the way you memorize something you are afraid you will need later.

Then they wheeled her through the doors, and I let go.

---

The surgical observation corridor had twelve chairs and one window that looked out on a concrete wall. I sat in the chair closest to the double doors. I didn't move.

Diana texted at the two-hour mark. I didn't answer.

At three hours I got up and stood at the window and pressed my left wrist against the glass until the cold moved up my arm.

At four hours the double doors opened.

Dr. Shen came through alone. She was still in her surgical cap. Her hands were at her sides.

I read it on her face before she reached me. Before she opened her mouth. Before she said my name in that particular voice—quiet, careful, the voice of someone delivering the irreversible.

I read it in the set of her shoulders. In the way she wasn't walking fast.

I had gotten very good at reading things I didn't want to know.

She stopped in front of me. Her eyes were wet.

"Marina," she said.

I looked at her. I kept my hands very still.

"I'm so sorry."

The corridor was completely quiet. Somewhere down the hall a monitor beeped, steady and indifferent.

I pressed my wrist against my side.

I did not fall. I did not make a sound.

I just stood there, in the corridor with the twelve chairs and the concrete wall, and felt the weight of my daughter's fingers leave my hand for the last time.
