Chapter 3

Anita's mouth dropped open, surprised at how much I knew. I continued to smile at her, but my words became sharper. "Second, Miss Becker, if you continue to slander my personal life without evidence, I must remind you that this constitutes defamation."

I continued, "I've worked here for many years and you believe Valerie's few words to deem me worthless? You can check my annual performance reviews, which year wasn't excellent? Casually claiming someone's workability is poor and ruining their livelihood is akin to killing their parents."

"So, Miss Becker, have you decided yet? Are you giving me a termination notice or not?" I asked her.

If she did, I would be guaranteed at least employee compensation, a windfall from the sky. Anita, being an experienced HR, immediately changed her demeanor. "I didn't say I was firing you, we're just having a discussion," she said.

I chuckled. "A discussion? I don't agree to any discussion. Since you won't give me a termination notice, I'll continue working diligently for the company. Oh, and by the way, I'm pregnant."

Anita's face turned green instantly. I hadn't taken more than two steps out of the office when I heard Anita furiously calling someone. "Did you know she's pregnant! If I'd known, I wouldn't have wasted my time!"

I smirked, changed my course and headed straight for Valerie instead of my desk. She had just been scolded by Anita over the phone and looked terrified when she saw me.

I coldly smiled and cleared my throat, making sure my voice carried through the entire office. "Miss Rivera, I need to report something to you. I saw a post online, clearly made by someone from our office. This person is a pervert, spying on what I wear and say every day. The most disgusting part is they claimed I was being kept as a mistress by a man. I really can't understand how someone could be so unhappy to compare themselves to an orphan like me who has relied on scholarships from childhood."

I continued, "I should tell you, I got married a year ago. My marriage is registered with the civil affairs bureau and everything I've worn or carried in the past year was bought by my husband, including the money he wanted to transfer to me yesterday. I'm not bragging, I just want people to stop making wild guesses."

"I'm reporting this to you for your sake as well. The poster's name was 'River Goddess,' and the person most likely to choose such a name in the office is you. But if you're really so dark-minded, filthy in thoughts and despicable in actions, I find it hard to believe. This pervert even spread rumors about me being a mistress by a man, leading HR to talk to me. If this office allows such behavior to go unchecked, the next victim could be you. After all, there are plenty of rumors about you too. How about a little reminder?" I warned her.

I kept going, "For instance, badmouthing Reagan in front of me, then throwing yourself at him, using his connections to become a team leader while still being jealous of me. And, for example, being married for years without having a child, while I've gotten pregnant within a year of marriage. People might start guessing if you're infertile. Are you infertile?"

Valerie's face went from beet red to ashen. The topic of having children was her Achilles' heel. She gritted her teeth and called my name, then lunged at me and started to push me.

I hadn't expected her to lose her temper and start fighting so quickly.

Perhaps bugs that are accustomed to living in the dark go mad when exposed to sunlight. The entire office rushed to break up the fight.

I sternly warned her, "If anything happens to the baby I'm carrying, you'll pay with your life!"

I immediately reached for my phone to call the police, but Reagan arrived just in time to stop me. He pleaded with me to not call the police for his sake and my condition was that Valerie must apologize to me in public.

Of course, Valerie refused. She wouldn't admit that the post was hers. I suggested she open the forum on her phone and show us her login name, but she hesitated. Reagan grabbed her phone and his face turned dark when he saw her username. It was clear to everyone now. Reagan had no choice but to apologize on her behalf, he even bowing deeply.

When the incident reached the boss, he was furious, believing that such disputes were damaging the company's atmosphere. Valerie was stripped of her team leader position and my performance bonus for the month was completely docked.

My salary was already low and with the additional deduction, I decided to take it easy. Honestly, this job was never my main source of income.

But Valerie couldn't get over it. She had worked so hard to become a team leader and now it was all for nothing. She began to look at me with resentment and tried to make things difficult for me.

For example, she took the initiative to divide my work under the pretext that I, as a pregnant woman, had limited energy. The less work I had, the lower my performance rating. Why should I, a pregnant woman, fight with her? I let her take it all!

In the end, I only kept a few clients, enough to earn a basic salary. Every day, I leisurely snacked in the office, watched her work like a horse and got scolded by clients.

I munched on an apple and laughed. The clients I managed were all the company's international clients. With her level of French, how could she possibly serve them?

It wasn't long before international clients began to complain about Valerie's poor French and lack of business knowledge. The boss had no choice but to ask me to take over again. After all, I was the best in the customer service department with my French skills and I had even earned a national translation qualification certificate in my spare time.

I was already unhappy with the boss for docking my performance bonus. So, I took advantage of this opportunity to leverage my control over international clients and the recording of Anita trying to fire me. After several rounds of negotiation, the boss scolded Anita for two hours in front of me. Finally, he doubled my salary and promised to continue paying my basic salary during my maternity leave. Only then did I agree.

As I passed Anita, who was bowing her head and being reprimanded, I shook my head at her.

I said, "Miss Becker, do you still think my work ability is poor? I didn't expect you to be used as a pawn without realizing it."

Anita's eyes darkened and her gaze shifted to where Valerie was standing.
