Chapter 2

Layla moved fast after that day.

I came into the office Monday morning and my keycard didn't work. I stood at the glass doors on the executive floor and swiped it three times. The light stayed red. People walked past me. A few looked. No one stopped.

I took the elevator back down and went to security. The guy at the desk checked his system and frowned.

"Your credentials were deactivated," he said. "You'll have to talk to HR."

"Deactivated," I repeated.

He shrugged. "That's what it says."

I went to HR. The woman behind the desk pulled up my file and her face went carefully blank.

"It looks like your access was updated by Layla Sanchez. Executive assistant to the CEO. She has authorization for administrative changes."

"I see," I said.

She printed me a temporary visitor badge. I took it and left.

I didn't go upstairs. I went home.

That afternoon I got an email bounce-back. I had tried to send Mateo a message about dinner plans and the system rejected it. "You are not on the distribution list for this address."

I opened my laptop and checked the internal company portal. My name was gone from every project folder. Every shared calendar. Every thread.

I sat there looking at the screen. My hands were very still on the keyboard.

I didn't call Mateo. I didn't text him. I waited.

He came home late that night. I was sitting at the kitchen table with a glass of water I hadn't touched.

"Hey," he said. He dropped his keys on the counter. "Long day."

"My keycard doesn't work," I said.

He paused. "Oh. Yeah. Layla mentioned something about a security update. I'll have her fix it tomorrow."

"She removed me from the email lists too."

He sighed and opened the fridge. "Esme, she's streamlining communications. It's not personal."

"She replaced the photo on your desk," I said.

He turned and looked at me. "What?"

"The one of us. From last year. She put a photo of herself instead."

He closed the fridge. "It's from the industry conference. She thought it looked more professional."

I didn't say anything.

He rubbed his face. "Can we not do this right now? I'm tired."

"Okay," I said.

He went into the bedroom. I stayed at the table.

I opened my phone and made a note. Keycard. Email. Photo. I saved it and put the phone down.

Two days later, Mateo had a client dinner in SoHo. He told me he would get a car back, but I said I would pick him up. He said fine.

I left early. I parked near the building and walked up to the rooftop bar. The hostess asked if I had a reservation. I said I was meeting someone and she waved me in.

The terrace was warm and crowded. String lights hung overhead. I saw Mateo at a long table near the edge, surrounded by men in suits. Layla sat beside him. I stopped near the bar where the light was dim and no one was paying attention.

I could hear him clearly. His voice carried the way it always did when he was performing.

"Honestly," he was saying, "Esme's great to look at, but that's about it. A pretty face with nothing behind it. She wouldn't know a balance sheet from a bedsheet."

The table laughed. One of the men raised his glass.

I stood very still.

Mateo turned to Layla. His expression shifted into something warmer. "That's why I value people like you, Layla. People who actually get it."

She smiled and touched his arm.

He leaned back in his chair. "Actually, I've been meaning to tell you. I'm giving you the development rights to that Hudson River property. The waterfront plot. You've earned it."

Layla's hand went to her chest. "Mateo, are you serious?"

"Completely," he said. "You're the kind of partner this company needs."

She threw her arms around him. The table clapped.

I turned and walked out. No one saw me leave.

I sat in the car for a long time. My hands were on the steering wheel. I didn't start the engine.

That property. We walked there on our first date. It was empty then, just concrete and chain-link fence. Mateo said he wanted to build something that mattered. Something people would remember. I told him I believed in him.

I drove home. I went into the closet and pulled a box from the top shelf. Inside were files I kept separate. Private. Documents I never showed anyone.

I found the term sheets from the Hudson River deal. The original investment documents. My handwriting on every page. Notes in the margins. Contact names routed through Wagner family firms Mateo never knew existed.

I laid them out on the bed and photographed each one. Every page. Every signature.

I opened my phone and sent the photos to Hunter.

One message: "Add these to the file."

She replied in seconds. "Got it."

I put the documents back in the box. I put the box back in the closet.

I went into the bathroom and washed my face. I looked at myself in the mirror. Same face. Same eyes.

Nothing behind it.

I smiled.

I went to bed and fell asleep before Mateo came home.
