Chapter 3

The gala was held at a hotel in Tribeca. Morales Group had rented out the entire top floor. Glass walls, city lights stretched out like a grid below. I wore a black dress. Simple. Nothing that would draw attention.

Mateo was already inside when I arrived. I saw him across the room talking to a group of investors. Layla stood beside him in red. Bright red. The kind of dress that demanded to be looked at.

I stayed near the edge of the room. A waiter offered me champagne. I took it and held it.

The music was loud. People danced. I watched Mateo move through the crowd. He shook hands. He laughed. Layla followed him like a shadow.

Around ten, someone turned the music up. The dance floor filled. I saw Layla pull out her phone. She held it up high and tapped the screen. The little red dot appeared in the corner. Live.

She was streaming.

She turned the camera on herself first. Smiled. Said something I couldn't hear over the music. Then she panned across the room. The crowd. The lights. She was performing.

She walked toward Mateo. He was still talking to someone. She stepped right into the frame and put her hand on his shoulder. He turned. She said something close to his ear.

Then she kissed him.

Full on the mouth. Her hand went to the back of his neck. His eyes widened for half a second. Surprise. Then his hand moved to her waist and stayed there.

The kiss lasted five seconds. Maybe six.

She pulled back and grinned at the camera. Mateo blinked. His face was flushed. She blew a kiss at the lens and ended the stream with a wink.

I stood there holding my champagne. The glass was cold in my hand. I set it down on the nearest table and walked out.

No one stopped me.

I got in my car and sat in the parking garage. The concrete walls were gray and blank. I could hear the hum of the ventilation system.

My phone buzzed.

A DM. From Layla.

I opened it.

It was a screenshot. The kiss. Mateo's hand on her waist. Her eyes half-closed. The image was sharp and clear. Below it, she had typed: "He chose someone on his level. Take the hint."

I read it twice.

I looked at the timestamp. 10:47 PM.

I sat there for a long time. My hands were very still on my lap.

Then I opened the screenshot tool. I captured the entire exchange. The DM. The caption. Her verified handle. The blue checkmark. The timestamp.

I saved it.

I opened the Morales Group Slack workspace. The company-wide channel. Three hundred seventy-two members.

I uploaded the screenshot.

No caption. No explanation. Just the image.

I hit send.

Then I turned my phone off. I started the car and drove home.

I didn't turn my phone back on until morning.

When I did, there were two hundred and sixteen notifications.

The Slack channel had exploded. Messages every few seconds. Some people were tagging Mateo. Some were tagging HR. Some were just typing question marks over and over.

I scrolled through without reading closely. Then I opened my texts.

Mateo had called fourteen times. Left six voicemails.

I deleted them without listening.

Hunter had sent one message at 6:00 AM: "I saw. You okay?"

I typed back: "Yes."

She replied immediately: "Good. Let them burn."

I made coffee. I sat at the kitchen table. My mother's urn was in front of me where I always kept it. Pale blue ceramic. White flowers painted by hand.

My phone rang. Mateo.

I let it ring.

It stopped. Then started again.

I answered.

"Esme." His voice was tight. Strained. "What the hell did you do?"

"I posted a screenshot," I said.

"You posted it to the entire company. Do you have any idea what kind of shitstorm this has caused? The board is calling me. PR is calling me. Investors are asking questions."

"Okay," I said.

"Okay? That's all you have to say?"

I didn't answer.

He exhaled hard. "Layla said it was a joke. A stupid joke. She didn't mean anything by it."

"She sent me a DM," I said. "Telling me you chose someone on your level."

Silence.

"She what?"

"It's in the screenshot," I said. "Everyone saw it."

More silence. Then: "Esme, you need to take it down. Right now. This is damaging the company."

"No," I said.

I hung up.

I turned the phone off again.

I sat there with my coffee and looked at the urn.

I thought about five years. Every night I stayed up writing his proposals. Every investor I called through back channels. Every crisis I fixed in silence.

Every time I made myself smaller so he could feel bigger.

I picked up my phone and turned it back on. I opened my messages and found Hunter's name.

I typed: "How complete is the file?"

She replied in seconds: "Everything. Hotel receipts. Client lists. Testimony from three junior employees she stole credit from. It's airtight."

I stared at the screen.

Then I typed: "Send it to me. All of it."

Three dots appeared. Then: "You're sure?"

"Yes," I typed.

The file came through two minutes later. A compressed folder. Sixty-three documents.

I downloaded it. I opened the first file.

It was a hotel receipt. Layla's name. A client's name. Same room. Same night a major deal closed.

I opened the second file. Text messages. Screenshots. Layla promising a junior analyst she would split the commission. Then an internal memo two weeks later crediting Layla alone.

I kept reading.

By the time I finished, the sun was higher in the sky. My coffee was cold.

I closed the folder.

I opened a new message to Hunter.

"I'm ready," I typed.

She replied immediately: "When?"

I looked at the urn. I thought about my mother. About the last thing she said to me before she died. "Don't let anyone make you small, Esme. You were never meant to be small."

I typed: "Soon."

I hit send.

Then I stood up, walked into the bedroom, and started packing.
