Chapter 2

The paper was thick cream cardstock with gold foil lettering. A mutual friend handed it to me at lunch.

"Angelique wants to clear the air," the girl said, looking nervous. "She said life is too short for petty drama. It’s her birthday at the SoHo club tonight. Please say you’ll come."

I touched the smooth edge of the envelope. "Of course," I said with a soft smile. "Tell her I’d love to."

It was an obvious trap. But an invitation to a trap is just an opportunity with better lighting.

I dressed carefully that evening. I skipped the sequins and the heavy jewels. Instead, I wore a simple black slip dress with clean lines and minimal makeup. In a room full of Manhattan heiresses drowning in feathers and tulle, I looked sharp, quiet, and impossible to ignore.

When I stepped into the SoHo club, the bass vibrated through the floorboards. Violet lights cut through the smoke. Angelique stood on an elevated lounge platform in a metallic silver gown. When she saw me, her smile tightened around the edges. Men turned their heads as I passed. Angelique noticed every single one of them.

Within forty minutes, a young hostess tapped my shoulder.

"Ms. Medina?" she whispered over the music. "Emmett sent me. He's waiting for you in the private back room. He has a message for you."

I looked at the girl’s eyes. She wouldn't hold my gaze.

"Lead the way," I said gently.

She guided me down a dark corridor past the restrooms. She opened a heavy door to a private VIP room and stepped back immediately.

I walked inside. The lock clicked shut behind me.

Emmett wasn't there.

Two large men stood near the velvet couch. They wore dark jackets and heavy boots. One of them had bruised knuckles. The other smelled like cheap aftershave and sour whiskey.

"Don't scream, pretty girl," the bigger one said. He took a step toward me. "This won't take long."

I didn't scream. I didn't beg.

I took four seconds.

One. Look for the exit behind them. Blocked.

Two. Look for the cameras. None inside, but there was a glass partition wall dividing this room from the back half of the main lounge.

Three. Weapon. On the low marble table sat an unopened bottle of vintage Dom Pérignon. Heavy glass.

Four. Commit.

I didn't back away. I lunged forward, grabbed the thick neck of the champagne bottle with both hands, and swung it hard against the glass partition.

The sound was like a gunshot.

The heavy glass shattered into spiderwebs. I swung the bottle again with all my weight. The center blew open in a rain of jagged shards.

The bigger man reached out to grab my hair. I didn't flinch. I dove straight through the jagged opening.

Pain tore through my skin. Sharp edges sliced my forearms, my palms, and the side of my ribcage. Warm blood instantly soaked through my black dress. I hit the floor on the lounge side, rolling hard onto the polished wood.

The music stuttered. Someone screamed.

I pushed myself up onto my feet. Glass crunched under my heels. Blood ran down my wrists and dripped from my fingertips. I didn't wipe it away. I didn't cry.

I found Emmett.

He was standing near the main bar, talking to an investor with a fresh Scotch in hand.

I walked straight across the floor. The crowd parted around me in dead silence. Whispers rippled like a wave.

Emmett turned around, his mouth half-open to laugh. Then he saw me. His face went gray.

"Scarlett?" he gasped, dropping his glass. It shattered on the floor. "What happened? What—"

I didn't answer. I stepped into his space and let my knees buckle.

I collapsed against his chest. I pressed both of my bleeding hands flat against his pristine white shirt, soaking the fine cotton in bright crimson. I let my head fall onto his shoulder and closed my eyes.

I said nothing at all.

Security rushed in. Screams erupted. Before the night ended, the two men were cornered by police near the service alley. The club’s exterior cameras showed them waiting outside the back door twenty minutes earlier.

The next morning, Emmett was a wreck.

He spent the entire week drowning in guilt. He filled the penthouse with white orchids. He brought me breakfast in bed, bandaged my cuts with trembling fingers, and couldn't look me in the eye without apologizing.

"I should have been with you," he choked out, kneeling beside the bed. "I'm so sorry, Scarlett. I’ll handle Angelique. I'll have a serious conversation with her. I swear."

I looked at him with wide, forgiving eyes. I brushed a stray hair from his forehead.

"It's not your fault, Emmett," I murmured softly. "You didn't know. As long as you're here, I feel safe."

He buried his face in my lap and almost wept.

Two days later, a velvet jeweler’s box arrived. Inside was a thirty-carat diamond tennis bracelet.

"For my brave girl," the card read.

I wore it once. We attended a small charity luncheon that weekend, and I let the paparazzi snap photos of the sparkling diamonds wrapped around my freshly scarred wrist.

On Monday morning, I met quietly with a private diamond merchant in the Diamond District. By noon, the bracelet was liquidated. Three hundred and fifty thousand dollars landed straight into my Cayman Islands account.

That evening, a delivery courier handed me an unmarked flash drive.

A club technician I had put on my private payroll six months ago came through. The drive held two crystal-clear video files: Angelique handing an envelope of cash to the hostess behind the club, and the two men entering the VIP suite moments before I was led inside.

I plugged the drive into my encrypted laptop. I copied the files into my operational archive, typed a timestamped log into my encrypted journal, and wiped the external drive clean.

I locked the laptop in the safe.

Then I walked out to the kitchen, poured Emmett a glass of Scotch, and waited for him to come home.
