Chapter 3

I worked until two in the morning on the Miller acquisition. It was a two-hundred-million-dollar deal, and Howard Enterprises was about to sign it. Emmett had barely skimmed the binder. He trusted his legal team too much.

I didn't trust anyone.

I sat at my desk and turned page after page. Around two fifteen, my eyes stopped on page six hundred and forty. A tiny sub-clause was tucked inside Section 14.2. It looked like standard boilerplate text about debt restructuring. But it wasn't. It was a poison pill. If the deal went through, Miller’s previous creditors could instantly trigger a forty-million-dollar payout straight from Howard’s cash reserves.

None of the senior partners had caught it.

I didn't storm into Emmett's office. I didn't boast. I just wrote a clear, one-page memo. I cited the exact legal precedent, explained the financial trap, and attached it to the morning board packet.

At ten o’clock, my inbox chimed.

The email came from Victor Langley. He was the most senior, respected member of the board. He rarely spoke to associates.

*Good catch, Ms. Medina. The room noticed.*

I didn't reply right away. I saved the message into a secure folder. Victor Langley was old money, and the board listened to him. He was a piece on the board, and now he was watching me.

Two days later, my phone buzzed during my morning routine.

It was a link from the *New York Post*. A glossy, exclusive double-page spread filled the screen: *Manhattan Royalty: Emmett Howard and Angelique Ferguson Announce Engagement.*

There were photos of them at The Plaza’s Palm Court. Emmett was wearing a bespoke charcoal suit, beaming down at her. Angelique leaned into his chest, holding up her left hand. A massive emerald-cut diamond caught the flashbulbs. The article called them "New York’s golden couple."

I read every word. I took a sip of my black coffee. The dark roast was slightly bitter, but hot.

I set the phone face-down on my desk.

At nine sharp, I walked into the marketing strategy session. For three hours, I sat across from department heads, approved quarterly budgets, and gave clear directions. My voice remained steady. I smiled when someone made a joke. Nobody in the room could tell my world had supposedly just blown up.

That night, Emmett didn't come home. He was out celebrating at a private dinner with the Fergusons.

The penthouse was completely silent. I took out a clean, lined notebook—not my operational log, but a simple pad of paper. I unscrewed my fountain pen.

It was time to write the farewell letter.

The words had to be precise. Every sentence needed to strike like a scalpel. I wrote one draft, stared at it, and tore it out. I wrote another. Too angry. The third was too soft.

I wrote seven drafts before I stopped.

*You never wanted this child. Neither did I, in the end. But unlike you, I didn't get to choose. Goodbye, Emmett. I hope she was worth it.*

I folded the paper carefully and slid it into an envelope.

Three days later, it was a rainy Monday. At 8:15 a.m., I stepped out of my regular coffee shop on 46th Street with a paper cup in hand.

The sidewalk was crowded with commuters under black umbrellas. Suddenly, a heavy shoulder slammed into me. My coffee spilled across my coat. Before I could catch my balance, two men in hooded jackets grabbed my collar.

They dragged me into the recessed doorway of a vacant storefront.

"Homewrecking bitch," one snarled.

A fist slammed into my jaw. The pain was sudden and white-hot. My head whipped back against the brick wall, and I tumbled to the wet pavement. Heavy boots struck my ribs, then my thigh.

A few feet away, a bystander held up an iPhone. He didn't help. He just tilted his screen to catch my bruised face in 4K resolution.

"Keep your hands off other people's men!" one of the attackers spat loudly for the camera.

They kicked me one last time and sprinted toward the subway.

I lay on the damp concrete for ten seconds. The cold soaked into my clothes. The guy filming zoomed in on my split lip, turned on his heel, and hurried away.

I didn't scream. I didn't cry.

I pushed myself up, using the brick wall for support. My ribs ached with every breath, but nothing was broken. I pulled my coat tight over my torn shirt, hailed a yellow cab, and went straight home.

I didn't call the police. The police would just bring questions, statements, and Emmett’s public relations team trying to cover it up.

Inside the bathroom, I set up my high-resolution camera on a small tripod. Under the bright vanity bulbs, I took clinical, well-lit photos. The purple swelling along my cheekbone. The bloody scrape on my jaw. The dark bruising spreading across my ribs and left hip.

I uploaded the photos, added timestamps, and locked them in my encrypted folder.

By noon, the video was everywhere. It was on TikTok, X, and Instagram with the title: *This is what happens to homewreckers in NYC.* Over two hundred thousand views in six hours. The comments were brutal and ugly.

I ignored the comments. I opened a tracking tool on my encrypted laptop.

I took the license plate from a delivery truck parked across the street from the coffee shop, pulled traffic camera feeds, and ran the faces of the two men through a facial recognition database. Within ninety minutes, I had their names.

By three o'clock, I had their bank deposits.

Five thousand dollars each. The money came from an anonymous LLC registered in Delaware. I peeled back the shell company’s filings. It took me forty minutes to find the operating account. The money had been wired through a private management firm owned entirely by Angelique Ferguson.

I saved the bank routing numbers. I saved the video file, the metadata, and the transfer receipts.

I leaned back in my chair and gently dabbed an ice pack against my cheek.

Angelique thought she was driving me out of the city like a stray dog. She didn't realize she was handing me the very rope I would use to hang her.
