Chapter 2

I told no one.

Not Clara. Not my father. I drove back to Seattle with two cracked ribs and a discharge paper I'd signed myself, and I walked into the studio like I'd just been on a long trip. Clara looked up from her workstation, opened her mouth, and then closed it again. She knew me well enough to know that some things needed to be unpacked in private before they could be spoken out loud.

I sat down at my table. I picked up my needle. I worked.

For three days, that was enough. Just the needle and the thread and the hoop. The familiar pull of silk against my fingertip. The small, manageable universe of a single stitch.

Then the envelope arrived.

It was a legal notice. Clean white paper, crisp letterhead, the kind of language that turns a knife into a formality. Raylan Thomas had withdrawn his angel investment from Richardson Artisan Studio, effective immediately. The sum was listed in black ink at the bottom of the page, and I read it twice because the first time my brain simply refused to process it.

I set the paper down on my worktable. Outside, it was raining—a thin, grey Seattle rain that made the windows look like they were crying. I looked at the number again.

Payroll. Gone.

Material reserves. Gone.

The deposit for my father's kidney transplant surgery, due in three weeks.

Gone.

My phone buzzed.

I looked at the screen. Raylan's name. I picked up.

'I wanted to make sure you received the notice.' His voice was flat. Businesslike. The same voice he used on investor calls. 'Consider this your severance from my life.'

I waited for something else. An acknowledgment. A question. Anything that suggested he remembered I had been in a hospital four days ago with broken ribs and internal bleeding, that his name was still listed in my phone as the person to call if I was dying.

Nothing.

He hung up.

I sat there holding the phone for a long moment. The rain tapped against the glass. Somewhere in the back of the studio, a spool of thread rolled off a shelf and hit the floor with a small, hollow sound.

I set the phone face-down on the worktable.

I picked up my needle.

I started working.

The next morning, I asked Clara to come in early.

She arrived with two coffees and the expression of a woman who had already guessed that whatever I was about to say was bad. She sat across from me at the cutting table, wrapped both hands around her cup, and waited.

I laid it out straight. No softening, no preamble.

'The investment is gone,' I said. 'Pulled. Effective immediately. That means we can't make payroll next week, and our material account is basically empty. My father's surgery deposit is due in three weeks. If we don't cover it, he loses his spot on the transplant list.'

Clara was quiet for a moment. Then she set down her coffee very carefully, like she was making sure her hands had something deliberate to do.

'Raylan did this,' she said. It wasn't a question.

'Yes.'

She nodded once, slow and tight. Her jaw worked like she was chewing through something she didn't want to swallow. 'Okay,' she finally said. 'Tell me what we need.'

That was Clara. No theatrics. Just the next step.

We spent the rest of the morning going through the commission queue together. Every inquiry, every pending request, every contact who had reached out in the last two months and gotten a 'we'll follow up soon.' Clara printed them all out and spread them across the table like a hand of cards.

'We take everything,' I said.

'Some of these are below your rate.'

'I know. We take them anyway.'

She looked at me for a second. Then she picked up her pen. 'I'll start making calls this afternoon.'

I went back to my table. My ribs ached every time I leaned forward—a low, grinding protest that I had learned to breathe around. The doctor had told me to rest for six weeks. I had nodded and signed the discharge paper and driven eight hours home.

I threaded my needle.

The piece in front of me was a commission for a woman in Portland—a wedding veil border, white silk thread on ivory tulle. Delicate work. The kind that required absolute steadiness of hand. I took a breath, let it out slow, and made the first stitch.

Somewhere across the studio, I could hear Clara on the phone. Her voice was warm and professional, but I knew her well enough to hear the steel underneath it. She was angry on my behalf in a way I couldn't afford to be right now. So I let her hold it for me.

I kept my eyes on the thread.

Three weeks. Twenty-one days.

I made the next stitch, and the one after that, and I did not let myself think about anything except the needle, the silk, and the small, precise world of the work in front of me. The world I could still control. The one no one could withdraw.
