Chapter 3

The envelope came on a Tuesday.

Manhattan return address. A law firm I didn't recognize. I opened it standing at my worktable, still holding my needle, and read it twice before I set it down.

Destiny Alvarez. Custom commission. Cathedral-length wedding gown. Hand-embroidered wisteria, bodice to hem. Delivery required within three weeks.

The fee was listed at the bottom of the page.

It was exactly—to the dollar—what I needed for my father's surgery deposit.

I stood there for a long moment. The studio was quiet. Outside, Seattle was doing what Seattle does in November: a low, grey sky pressing down on everything like a held breath. I looked at the letter. I looked at my father's hospital file sitting on the corner of my desk, the yellow sticky note on the cover where I'd written the deposit deadline in red pen.

I knew what this was. I knew it the same way you know when someone is smiling at you with their teeth and not their eyes.

I opened my laptop and typed the acceptance email.

I didn't tell Clara who the client was. I just told her we had a major commission and I needed the next three weeks cleared. She looked at the spec sheet—cathedral length, cascading wisteria, over two hundred individual petals per square foot of embroidery—and let out a slow breath through her nose.

'That's brutal,' she said.

'I know.'

She picked up her coffee. 'Okay.'

I started that night.

There's a particular kind of work that takes you so far inside itself that the rest of the world goes quiet. I found that place on the first night and I stayed there. The wisteria bloomed under my hands one petal at a time—each one a satin stitch cluster, shaded from deep violet at the center to the palest lavender at the edge, the way real wisteria looks when the light comes through it. I built the cascade from the left shoulder down, following the drape of the silk like water finding its own path.

Clara came in every morning and replaced my tea without saying anything. Some nights she stayed late, working at her own table, not talking. Just being there. I didn't thank her for it. She didn't need me to.

My ribs still ached when I leaned forward too long. I learned to sit differently. I learned to breathe around it.

On the last night, I finished the hem border at three in the morning. I set down my needle and looked at what I'd made.

It was the most beautiful thing I had ever created. That was the part that hurt the most—that I had put everything I had into something I already knew was going to be destroyed. Every stitch was technically perfect. Every petal was exactly what it was supposed to be. I had made it the way I make everything: completely, without reservation, as if it mattered.

I wrapped it in acid-free tissue. I folded the layers carefully, the same way I fold everything I love.

I flew to New York the next morning.

The Alvarez penthouse was on the Upper East Side, the kind of building where the elevator opens directly into the apartment. A housekeeper led me through a foyer that cost more than my studio and into a living room full of light and sharp angles.

They were both there.

I saw Raylan first. He was standing at the window with his back half-turned, looking out at the park. He didn't look at me when I came in. Destiny was seated, one leg crossed over the other, wearing the expression of someone who had already decided how this would end.

I set the garment bag on the table.

Destiny stood. She unzipped the bag with two fingers and lifted the gown to the light with a slowness that was entirely theatrical. She held it there, the silk catching the afternoon sun, the wisteria cascading exactly as I'd designed it.

I watched her face. She was looking at it the way someone looks at a thing they've already decided to destroy.

She gripped the bodice with both hands and tore.

The sound was very small. Silk doesn't make much noise when it gives way.

'Amateur work,' she said. 'We won't be needing this.'

Raylan said nothing. He kept his eyes on the window.

I looked at the ruined gown on the table. The torn bodice. Three weeks of work and every night I hadn't slept and every stitch I'd made while my father's file sat on my desk with the deadline in red pen.

I picked it up. I folded it—carefully, the same way I'd folded it the night before. The tissue paper crinkled softly under my hands.

I tucked it under my arm.

I walked out.

In the elevator, the doors closed and I was alone and I let myself cry. Not loudly. Just the way I do everything that matters—quietly, with my back straight, my hands still holding what I came with.

The lobby doors opened onto the street. Cold air hit my face.

I kept walking.
