Chapter 2

The list started small. By the third night it filled eleven pages.

I sat at the dining table with my laptop, a glass of water going warm beside me, and I scrolled through Lilia Morgan's Instagram like I was reading a crime scene report, because that's what it was. Six months back. A rooftop party in the Meatpacking District, string lights, her wrist tilted just so toward the camera. I zoomed in until the pixels swam. The bracelet was Cartier, a panther clasp, tiny emerald eyes. My grandmother's. It had a small nick on the underside of the clasp from a fall down the estate's marble staircase in 1987, a nick I used to run my thumb over as a kid because my grandmother let me hold her wrist and feel it. I zoomed in further. The nick was there.

I opened a spreadsheet. Column one: item. Column two: date last verified in my possession. Column three: date it appeared on Lilia's account.

The Valentino gown was next — ivory, hand-beaded, the one from the engagement photo. Before that, a gallery opening in April, a green silk column dress with a slit that my stylist had sourced from Milan, one of four in the world. Before that, an Hermès scarf, cream with a navy border, photographed draped over a chair in what was clearly a staged 'candid' shot, artfully angled so the monogram in the corner — N.C., stitched in navy thread by request, my mother's idea, back when I was twelve and thought monograms were the height of sophistication — sat just outside the frame. Almost outside the frame. Not quite.

I kept scrolling. I kept typing. My hands were steady, which surprised me. I thought there would be shaking. There wasn't. There was just this slow, cold accumulation, like frost spreading across a window pane one degree at a time.

When I was done with the wardrobe, I pulled the estate's security logs.

My family used software most people never think about — sensor alerts on the walk-in closets upstairs, a keypad on the vault behind my mother's old dressing room, a system logged and time-stamped by a server in New Jersey that nobody but me and two very expensive IT contractors ever looked at. I looked at it now. I built a second spreadsheet.

Mrs. Morgan's cleaning schedule ran Tuesdays and Fridays. I cross-referenced it against the sensor logs. Tuesday, closet sensor two: malfunction. Friday, same. Tuesday: malfunction. Over two years, the pattern repeated itself with the tidy consistency of something rehearsed. The vault code — six digits, changed twice a year, known to exactly four people, one of whom was Mrs. Morgan for cleaning access to the outer chamber only — had been entered seventeen times outside of scheduled hours. Ten p.m. Midnight. Once at 2:47 in the morning.

I sat back in my chair and looked at the number seventeen for a long time.

Then I picked up my phone and called Margaret Coleman.

She answered on the second ring, the way she always did, like she'd been sitting with the phone in her hand waiting for exactly this call. "Novah."

"I need you to open a file," I said. "Quietly. No paperwork that leaves your office yet."

"What kind of file."

"Theft," I said. "Two years of it. I'll send you the spreadsheets tonight."

A pause on her end, brief and professional. "Give me a name."

"Lilia Morgan," I said. "And I think her mother helped her."

Margaret didn't ask why I hadn't called sooner, or how I felt, or any of the things a friend might have asked. That was why I'd called her first. "I'll have a preliminary review by Thursday," she said. "Do you want me to move on it?"

"No," I said. "Not yet."

Because here was the thing I'd realized, sitting alone in that gutted apartment with cold spring rolls and a compass no one wanted: if I moved now, I'd get a theft charge and a broken engagement announcement and a news cycle that lasted four days before something else ate the internet's attention. That wasn't enough. Jace had told me I wasn't in his league. Lilia had worn my life like a costume and taken a bow in it. I wanted the whole city watching when the costume came off.

So instead of calling the police, I called my building's security director and asked him to come by personally, off the books, and install cameras. Every room but the bathrooms. The bedroom, the kitchen, the hallway, the closet Jace still had a key to, the closet where — I was almost certain now — Lilia had already been photographed in pieces of my life without ever setting foot in my actual apartment. That would change soon. I could feel it, the way you feel weather coming before the sky turns.

Then I had my things moved. Quietly, over two afternoons, while Jace was at work. My clothes, my jewelry, the framed photos I still wanted — not the Montauk one, that could stay gone — all of it relocated to a suite at the Campbell Club that even my father's assistant didn't have the address for. I left the penthouse staged. Throw blanket folded on the arm of the couch. A candle burned down halfway. Toothbrush still in the cup.

I stood in the doorway one last time before I left, looking at a home that no longer held anything of mine, and I thought about how easy it would be, in a week or two, for two people to let themselves in with a key they thought no one would miss.

Then I closed the door, and I waited.
