Chapter 3

They came on a Tuesday.

I was in my suite at the Campbell Club when the first alert hit my phone. A small icon. Green. Motion detected, penthouse hallway. I set down my tea and opened the app.

The footage was clear. Jace had his key out before the elevator doors finished opening. Lilia was behind him, her hand on his back, laughing at something he'd said. She was wearing my green silk column dress—the one from Milan, one of four in the world—and she moved through my front door like she owned the floor it stood on.

I watched them from two hundred blocks away and felt nothing that resembled surprise.

I saved the file. Opened a second drive. Saved it again.

Then I made myself watch the rest.

They went to the bedroom first. I won't detail what the cameras recorded there. I will say that they used my side of the bed, and that Lilia pulled the duvet up afterward with a proprietary little tug, like she was straightening her own sheets. I noted the timestamp. I saved the file.

Afterward they went to the closet.

This was the part that stayed with me longer than it should have. Jace sat on the velvet bench my mother had picked out and scrolled his phone while Lilia worked through the rack, pulling things out, holding them against herself in the mirror. A beaded jacket. A cashmere coat. A slip dress in champagne silk I'd bought in Paris and worn exactly once. She held each one up and made sounds—small, satisfied sounds—like she was shopping. Like it was a store. Like none of it had ever belonged to anyone.

Jace looked up once and said, "That one."

Lilia turned. "This one?"

"Yeah. Wear it Friday."

She smiled and draped it over her arm.

I opened a new column in my spreadsheet. I typed the date, the item, the timestamp. My hands were steady. I had trained them to be steady by then.

They came back twice more that week. The second visit was shorter—Lilia alone, moving through the closet with a canvas tote bag, efficient and quick, the way her mother moved through a room with a cleaning cart. I watched her open the drawer where I used to keep my everyday jewelry. She took three pieces. I had already moved everything that mattered, but I let her take the three. They were documented. They were evidence. Every single thing she touched was already in a spreadsheet with a column for when it would be used against her.

The third visit was the one I had been waiting for.

They arrived together, late afternoon, and for a while it looked like any other visit. Jace opened wine. Lilia curled up on the sofa and kicked off her heels. They had the comfortable ease of people who believe they are completely alone, which is the most useful thing a hidden camera can give you.

Then Jace's voice changed.

He set his glass down and leaned forward, elbows on his knees, and said, "We have a problem."

Lilia looked up. "Novah?"

"She's been quiet," he said. "Too quiet. She knows about the bills." He meant the rent, the loans, the hospital payments—the money I'd been moving into his accounts for two years without ever putting my name on it. He didn't know the full shape of what I'd done for him, but he knew enough to be afraid of it. "If she decides to make noise—"

"She won't," Lilia said.

"You don't know her."

"I know she's nothing." She said it simply, without heat, the way you state a fact. "She's got no leverage, no connections anyone cares about. She's just—" She made a small, dismissive gesture with her hand.

Jace was quiet for a moment. He touched his watch. "We need to make sure."

What came next took eleven minutes. I know because I checked the timestamp three times. Lilia proposed it first—casually, like it was an idea she'd had for a while and had simply been waiting to say out loud. A party. A drink. Something slipped in before Novah could notice. Photos after. The kind of photos that close every door a person might try to open.

"She won't see it coming," Jace said. He almost smiled. "She never does."

Lilia raised her glass.

I watched them toast in my kitchen, in my home, with my wine, and I felt something settle in my chest like a key turning in a lock.

I saved the file to three encrypted drives. Then I sent a copy to Margaret Coleman with a single line: *They just handed us everything.*

I closed the app. I picked up my tea. It had gone cold.

I drank it anyway, looking out at the city lights, thinking about a party on a yacht, thinking about a champagne glass, thinking about how much a person can plan in the dark before the lights come on.

I had eleven pages of list.

Now I had twelve.
