Chapter 2

Exactly one month after our wedding, Sunny Rivera walked back into our lives.

She did not knock down the door. She slipped through the cracks.

Sunny was William’s first love from his college days. Her family had lost everything in a bad financial scandal years ago, but you would never know it from the way she carried herself. She wore soft cashmere sweaters and smiled with quiet grace.

She started showing up everywhere. She accompanied William to King Enterprises board dinners as his “trusted old friend.” She came to our penthouse on Wednesday evenings carrying glass containers of homemade chicken broth.

“You look so thin, William,” she would say softly, spooning soup into his bowl while I stood alone by the kitchen counter. “You work too hard. Someone needs to take care of you.”

William never touched the dinners I cooked. But he drank her soup down to the last drop.

One evening, I heard them speaking in the hallway outside his study. Sunny’s voice was like velvet, dripping with fake sympathy.

“She seems so distant lately, William,” she whispered. “I worry she doesn’t appreciate what she has. A man like you deserves someone who loves you for who you are, not what you can wire into an account.”

William didn’t defend me. He only let out a heavy, bitter sigh. “Some people show their true colors early, Sunny.”

Sunny saw the opening, and she pushed hard.

Her mask slipped only when William was not around.

The first time happened on a Tuesday. I opened my bedroom closet and froze. Three of my work dresses—the modest ones I bought on sale with my own money—hung with clean, straight razor cuts right down the silk fronts.

I took them to the living room. Sunny was sitting on the sofa, flipping through a magazine.

“Did you do this?” my voice shook.

Sunny looked up. Her eyes were empty, devoid of any warmth. “Oh, dear. Must have been the dry cleaner. Those cheap fabrics snag so easily, don’t they?”

Two days later, I came home from my archival job in the basement of King Enterprises. I pressed my thumb to the biometric scanner on the penthouse door. The red light flashed. *Access Denied.* I punched in my passcode. A sharp error chime beeped.

Sunny had reprogrammed the smart lock while I was at work.

I sat on the lobby floor for three hours with my knees pulled to my chest. When William finally returned at nine o’clock, I jumped up.

“Sunny changed the code,” I said, my voice hoarse. “She cut my clothes, William. Now she locked me out.”

William loosened his silk tie. He didn’t even look at me. “The system had a firmware glitch today. The building management sent an email.”

“It wasn't a glitch!” I cried, grabbing his sleeve. “She’s doing this on purpose!”

William pulled his arm away with disgust. “Stop being paranoid, Evelyn. Sunny has been nothing but kind to you. Don't project your own ugly greed onto other people.”

He stepped into the private elevator and left me standing there.

That night, while he slept in the guest room, I sat on the bathroom floor and took out my notebook. The ink bled into the paper as my tears fell:

*She’s trying to erase me from my own home, and he hands her the eraser.*

The breaking point arrived on a stormy Friday night.

A heavy autumn rain beat against the city. William had asked me to pick up his dry-cleaned shirts from five blocks away. When I rushed back, soaked under a broken umbrella, my keycard didn't work. The smart lock screen was completely black. Sunny had manually disabled it from the master panel inside.

I knocked on the heavy wooden door. No one answered. I pressed the buzzer over and over. Silence.

The lobby guard looked away awkwardly. “Mr. King’s guest told me not to let anyone up without an appointment, ma'am. Company policy.”

I had no umbrella left; the wind had snapped the wire frame. I walked out of the building into the freezing downpour. I stood on the edge of the sidewalk along Park Avenue, shaking from head to toe, water running down my neck and pooling in my flat shoes.

My phone battery was dead.

Headlights cut through the sheets of gray rain. A black Bentley sped down the avenue.

I recognized the license plate instantly.

The car hit a deep puddle near the curb. A wave of dirty gutter water splashed across my legs, soaking my coat in filthy street grime.

The car slowed down for a brief red light at the corner.

I looked through the rain-blurred passenger window.

William was behind the wheel, his profile sharp and proud. In the seat next to him sat Sunny. She was laughing, her face flushed with warmth.

Draped over Sunny’s shoulders was William’s heavy charcoal suit jacket.

My breath caught in my throat. A sharp pain stabbed right through my chest.

Two years ago, under a sudden summer storm outside the office, William had pulled that exact jacket from his shoulders. He had wrapped it around me, pulled me close against his chest, and murmured, *“I’ll never let you stand in the rain alone, Evelyn.”*

Now, the jacket belonged to Sunny. And I was standing in the gutter.

The light turned green. The Bentley surged forward into the dark city night, red taillights fading away.

I didn't try to chase the car. I didn't borrow a phone to call him.

I stood there for a long time in the cold rain until my numb legs began to cramp.

Then, I turned around and walked down the avenue toward the neon signs near the edge of the borough. I found a run-down motel with a flickering sign.

The room cost forty-nine dollars.

I reached deep into my soaked pocket, pulled out the damp bills, and paid the clerk in cash.
