Chapter 3

The grand ballroom at the St. Regis was full of crystal chandeliers and soft laughter. Hundreds of Manhattan’s wealthiest donors clinked champagne flutes.

I was there, but barely.

My seat wasn't at Table One with my husband. It was three tables back, crammed near the service doors where waiters rushed past with silver trays. The event planner had squeezed an extra banquet chair between two strangers just for me.

Up on the stage, William stood behind the wooden podium. He looked striking in his black tuxedo, tall and commanding under the warm stage lights. He was giving the keynote speech for King Enterprises’ annual charity drive.

He spoke with total confidence. The room was hanging on his every word.

Toward the end, his expression softened. He set his notes aside and looked out over the crowd. His eyes bypassed my table completely and landed on Table One.

“Before we conclude tonight,” William said into the microphone, his deep voice carrying across the silent room, “I want to acknowledge someone truly special. Someone who has stood by me through my hardest days. The most important woman in my life. Sunny Rivera.”

Applause broke out like thunder.

Sunny stood up from Table One. She wore a champagne silk gown that caught every ray of light. She pressed a delicate hand to her chest, looked up at William with shining eyes, and gave a shy, graceful nod to the room.

Then came the murmurs.

Whispers rippled through the tables around me.

“Wait, isn't his wife sitting over there?”

“Look at her dress. Off the rack, right?”

“She didn't even get a mention. How humiliating.”

Pitying glances hit me from every direction. The heat rose up my neck, but I didn't drop my head. I kept my spine straight against the back of the small banquet chair. I folded my hands tightly in my lap, digging my nails into my palms until the sharp pain grounded me. I didn't blink. I didn't give them a single tear to whisper about.

When the lights dimmed for dessert, I stood up and walked toward the restroom.

The marble bathroom was empty. I locked myself inside a stall, leaning my forehead against the cool stone door. My breath came in shallow bursts.

I reached into my cheap satin clutch for a tissue. My fingers brushed against a folded piece of heavy cream cardstock.

I pulled it out and unfolded it.

The handwriting was neat, looping, and unmistakably Sunny’s:

*He was always mine. You were just the intermission.*

My stomach twisted into a tight, sickening knot. She had dropped it into my purse when we crossed paths in the coatroom.

I stared at the black ink. My hands shook for a second, then went dead still.

I didn't tear it up in rage. I simply dropped the card into the toilet bowl and pressed the lever. The water rushed down, swallowing the paper in a single swirl.

I walked over to the sink, turned on the tap, and splashed cold water onto my face. I dabbed my cheeks dry with a paper towel, fixed my dull pink lipstick, and smoothed down my dress.

When I opened the restroom door and walked back out into the ballroom, my face was blank.

A few weeks after the gala, everything shifted.

It started with a memory of a Tuesday night that wouldn't leave my mind. William had come home late, smelling faintly of expensive red wine and autumn rain. He had found me in the kitchen, folding laundry under a single dim bulb.

He didn't scowl that night. He didn't sneer.

Instead, he had stood in the kitchen doorway for a long time, watching me with dark, unreadable eyes. Something heavy and unguarded lingered in his face. He walked over, lifted a hand, and gently tucked a loose strand of hair behind my ear. His fingers were warm.

“Evelyn,” he had whispered, his voice cracked with something fragile.

That night, he carried me to bed. In the dark, he held me close against his chest. He kissed my shoulders with a slow, desperate tenderness. For a few brief hours, the cruel billionaire vanished. He was the man who had loved me under the rain on Park Avenue.

The next morning, the wall went back up. He left before sunrise without a word.

Now, six weeks later, I stood in the small bathroom of the townhouse.

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird.

On the white marble counter sat a plastic test stick. Two bright, unmistakable pink lines glowed beneath the glass.

Positive.

I pressed my trembling fingers over my lower stomach.

A baby. William’s baby.

A sudden, fierce warmth flooded my chest. For the first time since our wedding morning, the suffocating ice around my heart began to melt. Hope was a dangerous thing, but I couldn't stop it. It bloomed inside me like wildfire.

Maybe this was it. Maybe this tiny life was the bridge we needed. William loved family; he had always wanted a child. When he found out, he would listen. He would finally let me explain the eight hundred and eighty thousand dollars. He would see that I loved him, only him, always him.

I hurried out of the bathroom and grabbed my leather-bound notebook from the bottom of my nightstand drawer.

I flipped past the painful pages until I found a blank sheet.

I began searching my mind for names. Then, one came back to me.

Years ago, on a quiet Sunday in his apartment, William had shown me an old black-and-white photograph. It was his late grandmother. He had told me, with tears in his eyes, that she was the only person in his wealthy, cold family who had ever loved him without expecting anything in return.

Her name was Margaret.

I picked up my pen. My hand was steady now, filled with a sudden, quiet strength.

On the clean white page, I wrote:

*Margaret King.*

I looked at the letters on the paper. A small, tearful smile touched my lips.

I circled the name once. Then twice. Then a third time.
