Chapter 1

The bridal limousine sat parked outside the cathedral. Through the tinted glass, I could see the grand stone steps and the white ribbons fluttering in the morning breeze.

My hands shook so hard the silk of my wedding dress rustled.

My phone was still pressed against my ear. Kaleb’s voicemail played back in my head, raw and frantic: *“Evie, they kicked the front door open. Mom collapsed. Her heart gave out. The loan sharks are at the hospital right now. They said if they don't see eight hundred and eighty thousand dollars in two hours, they’ll finish her off. You have to get it from King. You have to!”*

I felt sick. My stomach twisted into knots.

There was no time. No other way.

I wiped a tear before it ruined my powder, took a shaky breath, and dialed William.

He answered on the second ring. “Evelyn? You’re outside?” His voice was warm. It was the same voice that had comforted me on late nights at King Enterprises, the voice of the man who once held his jacket over my head in a downpour and swore he would never let me stand in the rain.

“William,” I whispered. My throat felt like sandpaper. “I… I can’t get out of the car.”

A short pause. “What’s wrong? Are you nervous?”

“I need you to wire eight hundred and eighty thousand dollars to my personal account,” I said. The words tasted like poison on my tongue. “Right now. Call it… a bride price. If you don't, I won’t walk inside.”

I couldn't tell him about Kaleb's gambling debts. I couldn't tell him about the thugs threatening to pull my mother’s oxygen tubes. I couldn't bear to drag my family's filth into his clean, brilliant world.

The line went dead silent.

Five seconds. Ten seconds.

“William?” I choked out.

He didn't speak. He didn't ask why. A chime sounded in my ear—a mobile banking notification. *Deposit confirmed: $880,000.*

Then came a sharp click. He hung up.

The cathedral doors opened ten minutes later. The organ music swelled, rich and heavy, filling the high vaulted ceiling. I walked down the aisle alone, clutching my white bouquet so tightly the stems bruised my palms.

William stood at the altar in his black tuxedo.

An hour ago, his eyes had been full of anticipation. Now, they were flat. Cold. Unreadable. They were the eyes of a man whose worst suspicions about people had just been proven right. To him, I wasn't the woman who loved him. I was just another gold-digger who timed her shakedown for maximum leverage.

The ceremony went by in a blur. We said our vows. When he slipped the platinum band onto my finger, his touch was ice. He didn't squeeze my hand.

At the reception, flashbulbs blinded us. Guests toasted to our future. William smiled for the society photographers, but his arm barely hovered behind my waist. His fingers never grazed the silk of my dress. He didn't look at me once.

That night, we entered the bridal suite at the St. Regis. White roses covered the tables. A bottle of vintage Dom Pérignon sat chilling in silver.

William didn't even take off his jacket. He walked straight to the king-sized bed, grabbed a pillow and a wool throw, and carried them to the long sofa by the window.

“William,” I said softly, stepping toward him. “Please. Let me explain—”

He didn't answer. He lay down on the sofa, turned his back to the room, and closed his eyes.

I stood in the center of the lavish suite, completely alone.

I didn't take off my dress. I sat on the edge of the mattress in the dark, watching the red digital clock on the nightstand tick away.

Midnight.

One in the morning.

At two o’clock, my phone finally buzzed.

It was a text from the hospital. My mother had stabilized after emergency surgery. The loan sharks had been paid off and gone.

Right below that message, a new text popped up from Kaleb: *[Thumbs up emoji] Glad she’s okay. Hey, did he give you extra? Any money left over for me?*

My chest tightened until I couldn't breathe. I deleted his message with a trembling thumb.

I reached into my overnight bag and pulled out a small, leather-bound notebook. I had bought it the week before as a private gift to myself, meant for honeymoon memories.

I clicked a pen and wrote the very first entry under the dim glow of the lamp:

*I didn't want to ask for the money. But Kaleb said if I didn't, Mom would be dead by morning. William, I'm so sorry. I hope one day you'll know that I loved you before I ever knew your last name.*

The weeks that followed were quiet and cruel.

William canceled our flight to Italy without saying a word to me. On Monday morning, HR called to inform me that I had been reassigned from the 40th-floor corporate team down to the 4th-floor archive basement. I was buried under boxes of old files, miles away from his office.

At home in his townhouse, we were like strangers passing in a hallway. He spoke only when necessary, his words clipped and sharp.

One night, as he set his briefcase on the hall table, I gathered my courage and stepped into his path.

“William, about the wedding morning. I need to tell you why—”

He stopped. His eyes swept over me, freezing the blood in my veins.

“You got what you wanted,” he said, his voice flat and dead. “Don't pretend there's more to discuss.”

He walked past me into his study and shut the door.

I stood there in the quiet hall. I couldn't scream. I couldn't defend myself.

The next day, I opened a separate bank account. When my first small paycheck arrived, I kept barely enough for subway fare and cheap groceries. The rest, five hundred dollars, I transferred directly toward William’s personal account.

Eight hundred and eighty thousand dollars was an impossible mountain. But I promised myself I would pay back every single cent. Dollar by agonizing dollar.
