Chapter 2

Olivia spoke with an air of self-righteousness, her voice dripping with smugness. "This silly girl should feel honored to drink the young sir's urine. It’s her great blessing."

My mother-in-law appeared just then, quick to echo her words. "Exactly! This is boy’s urine we’re talking about. My grandson is destined to be a great man, and this little girl is lucky to even have a connection to him."

Olivia responded with a proud smile, her tone growing more condescending. "That’s right. My daughter is stupid, with no future ahead of her. Let her get used to the young sir’s taste now. Who knows? Maybe she’ll grow up to serve him faithfully one day."

My mother-in-law clapped her hands in approval, her enthusiasm unsettling. "Brilliant! Olivia, you should start training her in that direction. Let her endure more hardships while she’s young so she knows her place in the future. She can follow in your footsteps, serving our family for generations."

The two women exchanged meaningful smiles, their satisfaction evident.

Olivia’s cruelty didn’t surprise me—after all, my daughter wasn’t her flesh and blood. But my mother-in-law? To see her favor boys over girls to such an extreme, even to the point of dehumanizing her own granddaughter, filled me with a bitter sense of betrayal and disappointment.

I watched the two of them, their scheming smiles lighting up the room, and my anger simmered beneath the surface. Yet, there was also a flicker of expectation within me.

They saw my lack of reaction as ignorance, as proof that I was completely oblivious to the swap. Their confidence grew, their actions becoming increasingly brazen.

They gave my daughter a degrading nickname, Misty—worse than what one might call a stray dog. Their excuse? "The cheaper the name, the easier it is to raise."

While my son was spoiled with new toys nearly every day, my daughter had none. On the rare occasions when my son, out of genuine kindness, offered one of his toys to his sister, it always ended badly.

Olivia, upon discovering such moments of generosity, unleashed her fury. She would beat and kick my daughter mercilessly, tearing at her lips while screaming, "You little thief!"

Her accusations were relentless, her punishments cruel. “Don’t you dare touch anything in this house,” she hissed, “or you’ll be a thief, and thieves get their hands chopped off.”

Her goal was clear: to crush any shred of confidence or self-worth my daughter might have, to remind her at every turn that she was the lowest, most insignificant member of the household.

Under such constant abuse, my daughter became timid and withdrawn. She avoided eye contact, shrinking back in fear at the sight of anyone. Her small body bore bruises and scars—physical reminders of Olivia’s cruelty.

When it came time for the children to attend kindergarten, I enrolled both in the best international school. But Olivia locked my daughter in a room, refusing to let her attend.

When I confronted her, she replied smugly, “Madam, Misty is stupid and barely speaks properly. She’s destined to fail. Why waste money sending her to school? Focus on training the young sir instead.”

Her twisted reasoning didn’t end there. “Besides,” she added, “if the young sir’s classmates found out she’s related to him, wouldn’t that embarrass him?”

My mother-in-law chimed in with her usual favoritism, nodding in agreement. “Exactly! That silly girl doesn’t need schooling. It’s a waste of money. She should learn to mop floors, wash dishes, and clean toilets instead.”

I turned to my husband, Sean, desperate for support. I urged him to reason with them, to explain that every child deserves an education, especially at such a critical age.

Sean frowned and replied dismissively, “Honey, why do you even care about that silly girl? She’s not worth the trouble. If you’re too kind to her now, aren’t you afraid she’ll cling to our family in the future?”

His words cut deep, knowing full well that he was speaking about his own daughter. He had no intention of giving her even the slightest trace of fatherly love.

I looked at him intently and asked in a measured, deliberate tone, “Sean, don’t you think she looks a lot like you?”

His expression faltered for a moment. “If she were your daughter,” I pressed, “would you really be able to bear seeing her live so pitifully?”

For a fleeting second, I caught a glimpse of guilt flash across his face, but he quickly masked it. He cleared his throat and responded hurriedly, “Honey, you’re too soft-hearted. Fine, I’ll speak to Olivia about it.”

Yet, his words felt hollow. My attempt to stir his conscience had planted a seed, but I hadn’t anticipated the consequences.

It was my hesitant, probing remark that led to an unintended chain of events. Instead of sparking compassion, it deepened the resentment in the household.

From that moment, the flickering hope I had for my daughter dimmed, as her life descended into an even darker abyss.
