9.8 / 10.0
At the Howard family's pristine estate, the annual memorial takes a dark turn. For three years, she endured the cold indifference of Caspian's wealthy relatives. Now, the pretense has completely shattered. Under the watchful eye of Caspian's cousin, Cecile Fontaine, the dark secrets of this powerful billionaire dynasty begin to unravel. What was meant to be a solemn ritual quickly transforms into a dangerous web of betrayal, forbidden tension, and high-stakes mystery.

My Husband Buried Me to Protect His Mistress Chapter 1

The grass at the Howard estate was the kind of green money bought and maintained. Perfect. Unnatural. I stood in front of the grave plot Caspian had brought me to for three years running, holding a bouquet of white lilies that suddenly felt stupid in my hands.

Around me, Howard relatives milled in their summer funeral best—linen suits, dark sunglasses, expressions of practiced solemnity that didn't quite hide the boredom underneath. This was the annual memorial gathering, the ritual that marked you as family. I'd attended three times now. Three years of standing in this exact spot while Caspian murmured appropriate words beside me and his relatives pretended I wasn't there.

Except this year, they weren't pretending.

Cecile Fontaine—some kind of cousin, I'd never bothered to map the branches—stood ten feet away with a wine glass already half-empty. She was talking to another woman, but her voice carried. It was meant to.

"The real ceremony's at the main cemetery," Cecile said, her words sliding together just slightly. "Caspian's plus-one is already there. You know. The one who actually matters."

The other woman made a small sound. Not quite a laugh. More like agreement.

I looked down at the grave marker. A Howard uncle, twice removed, someone I'd never met. The dates on the stone were worn smooth. No one had tended this plot in decades.

My left thumb found the inside of my right wrist and pressed slow circles there. An old habit. Something I did when I needed to keep my face still.

Caspian was twenty yards away, surrounded by his relatives, holding court the way he always did at these things. Confident. Magnetic. The heir everyone expected him to be.

The heir I made him.

I set the lilies down on the grass—not on the grave, just beside it—and walked away from the group. No one called after me. No one noticed, or if they did, they didn't care.

The main Howard cemetery was half a mile through the estate grounds. I'd seen the signs for it before, always assumed it was private, reserved for the inner circle. I walked there now in my black dress and impractical heels, feeling the July heat press down on my shoulders.

The main cemetery sat on a hill overlooking the sound. Marble headstones, elaborate monuments, family names carved deep into granite. This was where the Howards who mattered were buried. This was where the annual ceremony was supposed to happen.

At the center stood a large memorial plaque listing the family trust designations. Official spouses. Bloodline heirs. The names that carried legal weight.

I found Caspian's name halfway down.

Beside it, in freshly engraved letters, was the spouse designation.

Estelle Gonzales.

Not Magnolia Elliott.

Not the woman who married him three years ago in front of four hundred guests.

Not the woman whose father made him Elliott Corp's designated successor.

Estelle Gonzales.

I pulled out my phone. Took a photograph. My hands were steady. I noticed that. Noticed the way my thumb had stopped its circling and my breathing had gone very calm and very even.

I walked back to the gathering.

Caspian was still surrounded by relatives, laughing at something his uncle said. He looked up when I approached, and for just a second, something flickered across his face. Not guilt. More like calculation.

I set my phone face-up on the wrought-iron table in front of him. The photograph of the plaque filled the screen.

Then I reached over and tipped the elaborate floral arrangement—two hundred dollars' worth of white roses and lilies—off the table. It hit the flagstones with a wet crash. Water spread across the stone. Petals scattered.

The entire garden went silent.

"Three years," I said. My voice came out controlled. Quiet. The kind of quiet that made people lean in to hear. "Was any of it real, or was I always just the funding?"

Caspian stood. He was good at this—the smooth recovery, the reassuring gesture. He reached for my arm. "Magnolia, you're misreading a legal technicality. Let me explain—"

I stepped back before his fingers touched me.

I pulled up Walter's contact and hit call. He answered on the first ring.

"Revoke everything," I said. "Tonight."

I didn't wait for his response. I knew he'd heard me. I knew what would happen next.

I turned and walked toward the estate's front drive. My heels clicked on the flagstones. Behind me, I heard Caspian call my name once. Just once.

I didn't look back.

I drove to the Manhattan penthouse in silence. The city lights blurred past. I kept both hands on the wheel and my eyes on the road and my mind very carefully blank.

The penthouse was supposed to be empty. Caspian was still at the Hamptons. But when I opened the door, I heard music. Soft. Intimate. And on the kitchen counter—two champagne flutes, still fizzing.

I walked through the living room toward the private garage. We had a car elevator. Direct access. The Bentley was supposed to be parked there—the custom one Helena had selected for my thirtieth birthday, the one Walter had delivered with a handwritten note that said, *For our extraordinary daughter.*

The garage door was ajar.

I pushed it open.

The Bentley was there. Rocking gently. Windows fogged.

I stood very still.

Then I walked closer.

Through the glass, I saw them. Caspian. And a woman with long dark hair. Both naked. Her head thrown back. His hands in her hair.

Something white-hot and absolute filled my chest.

I crossed to the tool rack on the wall. My fingers closed around a tire iron. It was heavier than I expected.

I raised it and brought it down on the driver's side window.

The glass exploded inward with a sound like the world cracking open.

Estelle screamed.

I reached through the shattered window, grabbed her by the hair, and pulled.

She came out of the car in a tangle of limbs and broken glass, hitting the concrete floor hard. She was sobbing, shrieking, covering herself with her hands.

Caspian scrambled out after her. He grabbed his jacket from the passenger seat and wrapped it around her shoulders, crouching beside her, shielding her with his body.

Then he looked up at me.

Not with shame. Not with apology.

With fury.

"She could have been hurt," he said, his voice low and vicious. "What the hell is wrong with you?"

I stood there holding the tire iron, glass glittering in my hair, and stared at the man I married.

He didn't mention the betrayal. Didn't mention the three years. Didn't mention the woman who gave him everything he had.

He looked at me like I was the problem.

And something inside me that had been bending for three years finally snapped clean in half.
