Chapter 2

Word travels fast in a pack house. By the third day, I couldn't walk past the training yard without conversations dying mid-sentence.

I heard the shape of it even when I didn't hear the words. Rejected Luna. Poor thing. Then, a day later, something colder crept into the whispers. Did you see her face. Three seconds. She didn't even blink.

Nora Vance cornered me by the pantry on the fourth morning, arms crossed, studying me like I was a puzzle she'd been assigned to solve. "You should be a wreck," she said. Not unkindly. Just honest, the way warriors usually are.

"Should I?" I kept folding the dish towel in my hands, corner to corner, even though it didn't need folding.

"Everyone expects it. Trenton expects it." She hesitated. "I think he needs it, Eileen. He keeps telling people it was a sacrifice. Noble Alpha, impossible choice. It plays a lot better if you're broken."

I set the towel down. "Then I suppose I'm inconveniencing his story."

Something flickered across her face—not quite a smile, but close to one. She didn't say anything else. She didn't have to.

I saw Trenton twice more before I left. Once across the dining hall, his hand resting at the small of Juliana's back, his mouth curved into something performing devotion. His eyes found mine over her shoulder and he flinched, actually flinched, like I'd struck him. The second time was worse—Juliana said my name to someone in the hallway, some idle question about pack schedules I used to manage, and Trenton's whole body went rigid, jaw locking, before he forced it loose again.

I felt nothing watching either scene. That was the part that unsettled the pack most, I think. Not my calm. The fact that my calm didn't crack no matter what they handed it.

---

My mother made three phone calls and had a job offer inside a week.

"Moonveil territory," she said, sliding a printed offer letter across my kitchen table like she was closing a business deal, which, in a sense, she was. "Corporate logistics coordinator. Decent pay, better people. Far enough that you're not tripping over Silverfang wolves at the grocery store. Close enough nobody says you ran."

"I'm not running," I said.

"I know that." She looked at me steadily. "I need everyone else to know it too."

That was Ruthie. Even in grief, she thought three moves ahead.

I packed in one afternoon. It didn't take long, because I made sure it didn't take long—I have always been efficient when efficiency is the only mercy available. Furniture, staying, sold to the next tenant. Kitchenware, staying. Books, coming with me. I moved through my closet with the same clean detachment, pulling dresses off hangers, folding them into boxes without pausing to remember which ones he'd complimented.

And then I hit the back of the closet, where five years of Silverfang-era clothes hung untouched. Nothing special about them. No scent left in the fabric anymore—that had faded months ago, the way scent always does. I stood there with my hand on a gray sweater I used to wear to pack council meetings and told myself to drop it in the donation bag.

I couldn't.

Not because I missed him. I checked, carefully, the way you'd check a wound for infection. There was no ache behind the impulse. Just a strange, stubborn refusal—if I threw them away, it would mean the five years had mattered enough to leave a mark on me. And I wasn't ready to admit that. Not yet. Maybe not ever.

I packed them in a separate box and didn't label it.

---

The Moonveil apartment was small and clean and smelled like nothing at all, which I appreciated more than I expected to.

Work absorbed me quickly. I was good at logistics—I'd spent five years managing a pack's worth of schedules, supply chains, and diplomatic headaches for a man who never once asked how I did it. Doing the same work for a corporate office felt almost restful. Nobody here knew what I used to be. Nobody flinched when they said my name.

At night, I sat by the window and took inventory, the way I always have.

No bond-pull. Still nothing there, a smooth wall where a door used to be.

My wolf—static. Faint, formless, like a radio tuned between stations. Not gone. Not quite present either.

And underneath both, something I didn't have a name for yet. A low ember. Not warmth exactly. Something more like heat waiting for permission.

I started walking the forest trails behind the apartment complex in the evenings. I couldn't shift—my wolf gave me nothing to work with—but I didn't want to abandon the trees either, some instinct older than the bond insisting I stay close to what was mine before Trenton ever was.

I bought basil and rosemary and a small terra-cotta pot and set it on the windowsill. I watered it every morning before work, checked the soil every night before bed. It was such a small thing. Nobody had ever noticed I liked doing it, not in five years.

I told myself that didn't mean anything either.

I told myself a lot of things, that first month in Moonveil.
