Chapter 3

Nora Vance started calling me on Sundays.

I never asked her to. The first time, I almost didn't pick up—Silverfang numbers still made something in my chest go still, a reflex left over from a body that used to answer to a bond. But it was only Nora, her voice clipped and a little embarrassed, like she wasn't sure why she was doing this either.

"Figured you'd want to know things," she said. "Since nobody there's going to tell you straight."

I didn't ask her to stop. I told myself it was just information, the same way I used to track supply-chain numbers—useful, impersonal, nothing to do with feeling.

That first Sunday, she told me Trenton had stepped back from Alpha duties. Delegated the border patrols to Marcus. Skipped two council meetings in a row. "He says it's temporary," Nora said. "Says Juliana needs him close while her wolf stabilizes."

"Stabilizes," I repeated, watering my basil, the phone wedged against my shoulder. The word tasted strange. Clinical. Borrowed.

"She collapsed at dinner Tuesday. Hands shaking, couldn't stand. He carried her out himself." A pause. "It was very dramatic, Eileen. Practiced-dramatic, if that makes sense."

It did. I'd spent five years watching Trenton respond to crises—real ones, warrior injuries, supply shortages, territory disputes. He moved fast, clean, decisive. What Nora was describing sounded different. Slower. Performed for an audience.

"He canceled the trade meeting with the Ashwood delegation to sit with her," Nora added. "Marcus had to smooth it over. He wasn't happy."

I trimmed a dead leaf off the basil and said nothing. There was a low ember sitting behind my sternum that hadn't been there in Silverfang, small and strange, and I didn't examine too closely why hearing about Trenton's unraveling made it flicker.

---

The second Sunday, Nora's voice had an edge to it.

"Another collapse. During training, in front of half the pack. Real theater—trembling, gasping, the whole thing. Trenton carried her to the healer's wing himself, didn't let anyone else touch her." She exhaled. "Callahan finally ran a full workup. First real one since she came back, apparently. Everyone just took her old records at face value before."

Something in me went very still.

"And?" I asked.

"Don't know yet. Callahan's not talking. But he pulled her whole file afterward—the deterioration reports, the original diagnostics from wherever she came from. Locked himself in his office with them for two hours."

I thought about Dr. Callahan. Thorough. Unhurried. A healer who'd stitched me up after a training accident once and lectured me the entire time about proper wound care, unbothered by rank or urgency. Not a man who panicked. Not a man who missed things twice.

"Keep me posted," I said, and was mildly surprised by how much I meant it.

---

The call came on a Wednesday, which told me something by itself. Nora didn't wait for Sunday.

"The records were fake," she said, no preamble. "Callahan found timestamp errors. A signature code from a healer who left the pack two years ago. Baseline numbers that matched a textbook example almost word for word." Her voice had gone flat with disbelief. "Her wolf is fine, Eileen. Healthy. Was probably always healthy."

I stood at my window, looking down at the basil, at the small green leaves catching the last of the evening light, and I waited to feel something enormous.

What I felt instead was quiet. Cold, orderly quiet, the same clarity that had followed me out of that pack house months ago.

"Does Trenton know?"

"Callahan told him privately. This morning." Nora's voice dropped. "Marcus said he's never seen him like that. Went white. Didn't say a word. Just walked out of Callahan's office and didn't come back to the pack house for hours."

I could picture it without trying. The jaw clenching once, going still, the way it always did right before he made a decision he wouldn't take back. I used to think that stillness meant courage. Now I understood it was just the shape he made right before he broke something.

"Where'd he go?" I asked.

"Back to the healer's lab. Late. Marcus said he was asking Callahan about—" Nora hesitated, like she wasn't sure the words made sense even to her. "About a reversal formula. Something that could undo what the first serum did."

The basil leaf between my fingers went still.

So that was where this was headed. Five years of devotion he'd silenced with chemistry, and now he thought chemistry could hand it back to him, like a debt he could simply repay if he found the right formula, the right dose, the right apology dressed up as science.

"He's going to come here," I said. Not a question.

Nora didn't answer right away. "I think he already believes it'll work," she said finally. "I think he needs it to."

I looked at the terracotta pot on my windowsill, at the small stubborn plant nobody in five years had ever noticed I loved growing, and something in my chest that I refused to call fear settled into something colder, harder, and far more prepared.

"Let him come," I said. "He'll find out the hard way that some things don't reverse."

I hung up before she could answer.
