Chapter 4

Alec's study smelled the way it always had — leather, old paper, the faint trace of his cedar-and-thunderstorm scent woven into the wood. My body still recognized it. My body was a traitor.

Helena was already there.

She stood beside Alec's desk, the completed serum cradled in both hands like a wounded bird. Her eyes were red. Her cheeks were damp. She did not look at me when Marcus pushed me through the doorway.

"Alec," she said softly. "I asked Edith to look at it before I took it. Just — just to be safe. I don't know why I asked. I just had a feeling."

She drew a careful breath.

"She found something. An unusual compound. Something that shouldn't be there."

She didn't say the word. She didn't have to. The word filled the room anyway, settling into the air between us like smoke.

Alec looked at the vial. Then, for the first time in two weeks, he looked at me. Directly. His eyes were flat. Whatever had once lived behind them — even the cold calculation of the harvesting — had gone somewhere I could not follow.

"Test it," I said. My voice came out level. The bandaged ruin of my hands hung at my sides. "Run a full compound analysis. Side by side with my synthesis log. I'll wait."

Helena made a small sound — half sob, half breath — and pressed the vial against her chest.

Alec did not order the test.

He did not even look at the vial again.

"Take her to the facility," he said.

Marcus's hand closed on my elbow. I went without speaking. There was no version of speaking that would change anything now.

---

The underground facility shared a corridor with the silver cell. I recognized the smell before I saw the room — antiseptic over concrete, the faint metallic tang of old blood.

The table was steel. Restraints at the ankles, the wrists, across the chest. A second strap for the forehead, so the head could not move during extraction. I had read about procedures like this in my parents' restricted journals. I had never seen one performed.

The pack Healer who came in was a woman named Edith. The same Edith. She did not look at me as Marcus and another warrior lifted me onto the table.

"Face down," Edith murmured.

They turned me. The restraints clicked into place across my spine, my hips, the back of my skull. My burned hands were strapped palm-down against the cold steel, the raw flesh shrieking against the metal.

I heard Edith open a tray. Heard glass on glass. Heard the soft pop of a needle's protective cap.

"This will hurt," she said. Quiet. Apologetic. Useless.

No anesthesia. There never would be. My blood's rare properties — the same properties that made it valuable — would be diluted by anything that dulled the central nervous system. They needed it pure. They needed me awake.

The needle entered between my lumbar vertebrae.

I had thought I understood pain. I had thought the silver cell was the floor. I was wrong.

This was not skin pain. This was structural — a deep, grinding agony that began at the point of insertion and radiated outward through nerve pathways I had not known existed until that moment. My back arched against the restraints. The forehead strap held my skull flat. My wolf, somewhere far below the surface of me, made a sound I had never heard from her before — not a howl, not a whimper, something rawer than either.

I screamed.

The sound tore out of me and went nowhere. The walls were soundproofed. The pack house above continued its evening. Somewhere up there, wolves were finishing dinner. Somewhere up there, Helena was being comforted.

The extraction took eleven minutes. I counted them through the haze, because counting was the only thing my mind could still do. When Edith withdrew the needle, my legs were numb. My vision swam.

"Report to the Healing Hall in the morning," Marcus said, unstrapping me. He still would not look at my face.

I walked back to my quarters because they made me walk. Each step pulled the puncture site like a hook through muscle. I did not cry. There was nothing left in me that knew how.

I reported to the Healing Hall the next morning.

---

The extractions came every four to five days.

Between them, my rank inside Shadowcrest was quietly rewritten. I was no longer the Healer who attended the Alpha's table. I was the she-wolf who scrubbed Helena's bathroom tile. Who folded Helena's laundry. Who carried Helena's tea. A different pack member supervised me each day — sometimes Marcus, sometimes a warrior I had once healed, sometimes a Delta who avoided my eyes.

Helena used those hours.

"You know," she murmured one morning, while I changed her bedsheets, "I've been hearing the strangest thing from the older wolves. About your parents. About the fire."

I did not pause. I tucked the corner. Smoothed the fabric.

"They say the timing was... suspicious. Given how valuable their research turned out to be." She lifted her hair so I could fasten her necklace. Her fingers were warm against the back of my neck. "I'm sure it's just gossip. But I thought you should know what's being said."

I filed the words. The way I filed everything now.

In the Healing Hall, between her errands and the extractions, I embedded another traceable marker into another formula. Chemical signature. Invisible. Permanent.

I pressed my thumb against the scar on my left palm. The pain was clean. Useful.

I kept working.
