Chapter 5

Luna died on the Healing Hall floor at dawn.

I had found her collapsed beside the herb cabinet, her small body convulsing, silver-white fur matted with saliva and vomit. I dropped to my knees and pulled her into my lap. My hands — still scarred, still shaking from the last extraction three days ago — moved through emergency protocols on instinct.

Check airway. Clear obstruction. Monitor breathing.

Her pupils were blown wide. Her heartbeat was erratic, too fast and then suddenly too slow. I reached for the emetic compound on the shelf above me. Administered it. Nothing came up. Whatever was in her system had already been absorbed.

I ran my fingers through her fur, searching for puncture marks, bite wounds, anything that would tell me what I was fighting. Nothing. Her gums were pale. Her breathing shallow.

Then I smelled it.

Faint. Almost masked by the herb cabinet's rosemary and thyme. But unmistakable to someone who had spent five years synthesizing compounds in this hall.

Nightshade extract. Processed with silver dust to bypass a wolf's natural toxin filters. Rare. Expensive. Deliberately untraceable to standard analysis.

I knew exactly three wolves in this territory who had access to that combination of materials.

One of them was me.

Luna's body went rigid in my arms. Another seizure. I held her through it, my hands cradling her small skull, my voice murmuring things that had no meaning — just sound, just presence, the only comfort I had left to give.

The seizure lasted forty-three seconds. When it ended, her breathing stopped.

I tried compression. Tried forcing air into her small lungs. Tried everything my parents had taught me and everything I had learned in the years since they died.

Nothing brought her back.

I sat on the floor holding her body as the sun came up. The morning light slanted through the Healing Hall's eastern windows and turned her silver-white fur almost translucent. The small crescent marking on her forehead — the moon mark I had named her for — was still visible.

I pressed my thumb against the scar on my left palm. The pain was clean. Steady. It gave me something to focus on that was not the weight of her small body growing cold in my arms.

I sat there for a long time.

---

The package arrived the next morning.

A courier I did not recognize delivered it to my quarters just after dawn. Plain brown wrapping. No return address. I opened it on my bed because my hands were too unsteady to manage the knots standing up.

Inside was a cloak.

Ceremonial style. Beautifully made. The outer fabric was deep forest green, the kind worn at formal pack functions. The lining was folded inward, hidden.

I lifted the fabric.

Silver-white fur. Soft. Distinctive.

The crescent marking was still visible near the collar.

I stared at it. My hands did not shake. My breathing did not change. Something inside me that had been cracked since the silver cell, since the extractions, since my parents' heirlooms burned, finally broke clean through.

I folded the cloak carefully. Wrapped it back in the brown paper. Placed it in the bottom drawer of my dresser beneath my spare healer's robes.

Then I went to the Healing Hall and worked through my morning tasks as if nothing had happened.

---

The Pack Banquet that evening was formal. Full attendance required.

I stood near the back wall because healers without rank did not sit at tables. I wore my plainest dress. I kept my burned hands folded in front of me. I watched the pack filter in — warriors, deltas, the few omegas permitted to attend, all taking their assigned seats.

Helena entered last, on Alec's arm.

She wore a cloak identical to the one in my drawer.

Forest green outer fabric. The lining visible as she moved, silver-white and unmistakable. She took her seat at the head table beside Alec, and as she settled into her chair, she stroked the fur lining with one hand. Slowly. Almost absently.

Then she looked directly at me.

Her expression was serene. Composed. She held my gaze for three seconds. Four. Five.

Then she turned to Alec, said something I could not hear, and laughed. He smiled. His hand covered hers on the table.

I felt my wolf move.

She had been silent for weeks — suppressed by silver, by repeated extractions, by the bond's severing and the weight of everything that had come after. I had thought she was gone.

She was not gone.

She surged upward through my chest like a drowning swimmer breaking the surface. My hands burned. My vision sharpened. I felt my fingernails lengthen, felt the bones in my hands shift and crack as claws pushed through the healer's gloves I still wore.

A sound came out of me that was not human.

I was moving before I made the decision to move.

Across the banquet hall. Between tables. Wolves scattered. Someone shouted. I did not hear the words.

Helena turned in her chair just as I reached her.

My claws raked across her face. Four parallel lines from temple to jaw. Deep. Immediate. Blood welled and spilled. She screamed. I struck again, across her throat, and the scream cut off into a wet choking sound.

Then hands were on me. Warriors. Three, four, I could not count. They dragged me backward. I fought. My claws caught fabric, skin, something that tore. They slammed me face-down on the stone floor. My cheek cracked against the tile. Someone's knee pressed into my spine.

Helena's screams filled the hall.

I could see her from where I lay pinned — see the blood running down her face, pooling on the white tablecloth, dripping onto the silver-white fur lining of her cloak. She clutched her throat with both hands. Her eyes were wide. Terrified.

Alec appeared. He looked at Helena first. Then at me.

His expression did not change. He did not ask what happened. He did not ask why.

He looked at me pinned on the floor — my claws still extended, my wolf's grief raw and visible in my eyes — and his jaw tightened.

"Feral," he said. His voice carried across the silent hall. "A danger to this pack."

He turned to Marcus.

"Strip her rank. Brand her rogue. She will be remanded to her blood relative Frank Elkins by morning."

Marcus hesitated for just a second. Then he nodded.

Alec walked to Helena. Lifted her from her chair. Carried her toward the Healing Hall, her blood trailing across the floor behind them.

I lay pinned beneath the warriors' hands and watched them go.

Somewhere far below the surface, my wolf finally went silent again.

This time, I knew she was not coming back.
