My Alpha Scarred Me to Protect His Mistress Novel Cover

My Alpha Scarred Me to Protect His Mistress

For eight years, I played the perfect Luna: straightening Dorian's tie, smoothing his lapel, smiling while the pack watched their Alpha. Then a folded note slipped from his jacket at 8:47 on a Saturday night, and I caught it before it hit the floor. I kept smiling. I called him handsome. He kissed my forehead and walked toward her. Every scar he carved into my skin was never protection — it was a shield for his mistress. Now the bond is bleeding, and the Luna who wore his mark must decide what she becomes when the lie finally ends.

Chapter 1

The note slipped from his jacket at 8:47 on a Saturday night, and my thumb caught it before it hit the kitchen floor.

I was fixing Dorian's lapel. Eight years of Luna reflex—smoothing the shoulder seam, brushing lint from the wool, tilting his tie a quarter-inch straight before he stepped out to address the pack. The banquet hall roared behind the swinging kitchen doors, silverware and laughter, three hundred wolves and their mates waiting for their Alpha. My hand slid under his lapel to flatten a crease, and paper rustled against my palm.

I kept smiling. Kept my eyes on his tie.

"There," I said. "Handsome."

Dorian kissed my forehead. His mouth was warm. His scent, cedar and rain, wrapped around me the way it had for eight years, and underneath it—layered thin, deliberate, a signature laid on his skin like a wet fingerprint—was jasmine. A she-wolf's floral. Fresh.

"Five minutes," he murmured. "Meet you at the head table."

"Five minutes."

He walked out through the swinging doors. The pack cheered when they saw him.

I unfolded the note against the marble counter.

Thick cream paper. Ariana Rivera's handwriting—I knew it from Thornfield Pack correspondence, the loop of her *g*, the pressure of the ink. Two lines. *Wear the grey shirt Thursday. I'll be at the border by nine.* Signed with a single *A*, the initial drawn small and intimate, the kind of small a lover uses when the full name is already understood between them.

My wolf woke. Not a howl. A low, warning growl at the base of my spine, the sound a wolf makes when she smells blood in the water.

*Serena.* Her voice, quiet in my chest. *Smell it again.*

I lifted the paper. The jasmine bloomed in my nose—Ariana had rubbed the note against her throat before folding it, deliberate scent-marking, a message wrapped inside a message. *I have touched him. I am on him. He carried me into your house.*

I folded the note back into a square. Slid it into the pocket of my dress. Smoothed my hands down my hips.

Through the kitchen door I could see Dorian at the podium, his hand raised in greeting. The pack was on its feet. My scarf, the silver one he'd given me for our sixth anniversary, was still wrapped around my throat where his mark sat under the silk. I could feel the mark warm against my pulse—the bond humming its familiar hum, oblivious.

I walked out through the doors and around the back of the hall. I climbed the servants' stairs to our bedroom. I stood in the middle of the room for exactly one breath.

Then I texted him. *Kitchen. Now.*

---

He came in laughing, still riding the applause, loosening his collar. When he saw my face he stopped laughing.

"What is it?"

I set the note on the counter between us. Unfolded. Flat.

He looked at it. His face did three things very fast. Shock. Then the flicker of denial already assembling itself—*that isn't mine, someone planted it, this is a mistake*. Then the third thing, the one I'd never seen on him before: the naked panic of an Alpha who has just realized his authority is about to be spoken back to him out loud, in his own house, by the one person whose voice the pack will believe.

"Serena." His voice dropped into that low register. Alpha tone. The command wrapped around my sternum and squeezed. "Put that down."

My knees wanted to soften. I locked them.

"How long," I said.

"Put it down."

"How long, Dorian."

He crossed the kitchen in two strides and grabbed my wrist. Not hard. Not yet. "Lower your voice."

"I haven't raised it."

"Serena—"

"How long have you been letting her onto our territory. How long has she been *on you*."

His eyes went past me to the kitchen door. To the hall beyond it. To three hundred wolves eating salmon and laughing at his opening joke.

He shoved me.

It wasn't calculated. It was the panicked jerk of a man clearing a threat from in front of him, and I went backward faster than I could catch. My shoulder blade hit the wall—hit the mounted silver ceremonial blade the Ironveil Alphas had displayed in that kitchen for four generations—and the edge bit through my dress and into the meat of my shoulder. Silver. Cold and clean and *wrong*, a burn that started the instant the metal touched me.

I gasped.

Dorian's face went white.

"Serena—Serena, I didn't—"

I opened my mouth to say his name. To say *stop*, or *let me go*, or maybe just to breathe. I don't remember which.

His eyes flicked to the hearth. To the second blade—the ritual one, the one that had been resting in the coals since the opening blessing an hour ago, its edge glowing faint orange.

He moved.

I saw him wrap the leather grip in a dish towel. I saw him lift the blade out of the fire. I saw him turn toward me with the heated silver in his hand and his other hand already rising to cover my mouth, and behind the panic in his face I saw the exact calculation—*she will scream, they will hear, they cannot hear*—and I understood, in the half-second before the metal touched my cheek, that my mate had just decided which of us mattered more.
