My Alpha Scarred Me to Protect His Mistress Novel Cover

My Alpha Scarred Me to Protect His Mistress

For eight years, I played the perfect Luna: straightening Dorian's tie, smoothing his lapel, smiling while the pack watched their Alpha. Then a folded note slipped from his jacket at 8:47 on a Saturday night, and I caught it before it hit the floor. I kept smiling. I called him handsome. He kissed my forehead and walked toward her. Every scar he carved into my skin was never protection — it was a shield for his mistress. Now the bond is bleeding, and the Luna who wore his mark must decide what she becomes when the lie finally ends.

Chapter 2

Three weeks after the burn, my face had stopped weeping and started scarring, a raw pink ridge from cheekbone to jaw that no salve would ever soften. Three weeks, and Ariana Rivera knocked on the front door of my own pack house at noon, in broad daylight, as though she had every right to be there.

I smelled her before I opened the door. Jasmine, and under it, thick and unmistakable, cedar and rain. Dorian's scent, layered on her skin like a second skin of her own. She hadn't bothered to be subtle. She wanted me to smell it.

"Luna Serena." She said my title like a joke she was still enjoying. "I hoped we could talk. Inter-pack relations. Thornfield and Ironveil have so much to discuss."

Her eyes went straight to my scarf, then past the silk to the ridge of scar tissue it couldn't quite hide. Something in her face settled, pleased, the way a woman looks when a rumor she's heard turns out to be true and even better than described.

"Come in," I said. "I'll make tea."

I seated her in the good parlor, the one with my grandmother's china, and poured with a steady hand. She talked. She always talked when she thought she'd already won—about Thornfield's eastern border, about how much closer it felt lately, about how understanding Dorian had been about "logistics." I asked small questions. What kind of logistics. How often he visited. Whether the arrangement was recent or had been building for some time. She answered all of it, generous with details, a woman narrating her own conquest to the person she believed had already lost.

"Poor Serena." She reached across the table and almost touched my scarf before I moved my teacup an inch, just enough. "That scar must be so difficult. I imagine it's hard, looking in the mirror now."

I kept my face still. "The tea is chamomile. I hope that's all right."

She smiled at that, mistaking my silence for defeat, the particular quiet of a woman who has nothing left to fight with. She left twenty minutes later, satisfied, trailing Dorian's scent through my foyer like a flag planted in captured ground.

My left hand had stayed flat on the table the entire visit, thumb pressed hard against the inside of my wrist. Every sentence she gave me, I filed.

---

That night I called Callum Reid.

"She came to the house," I told him. "Scented deliberately. Discussed access to the Alpha's schedule as though it were established and ongoing."

"Did she name specific meetings? Locations?"

"The eastern border. Regular visits. She implied it's been arranged for some time."

A pause on the line, unhurried, the sound of someone writing. "That's useful. Under the Luna Accord, a third party's deliberate scent-marking inside a Luna's sovereign household, combined with demonstrated access to Alpha resources, qualifies as documented interference. Keep the teacup she used."

"I already have it."

"Photograph the rim. Both scents overlapping, if you can capture it. File it with the rest."

I went back to the parlor after we hung up and photographed the cup under the lamp, the faint ghost of jasmine and cedar caught together on the porcelain, and locked it in the drawer with the maps I hadn't finished copying yet, the note with the small drawn *A*, the growing folder of a life I was building evidence against instead of living.

---

Dorian brought me wolfsbane blossoms the next morning, arranged badly in a jar, and told me the healer was sourcing a new poultice for the scar. I let him believe it might work. I let him kiss my temple. I let him talk about the robe he'd commissioned for the ceremony, deep blue, real silver thread at the collar—an irony he clearly hadn't considered.

"It'll fix everything," he said, more than once, to me, and later, I heard, to Marcus.

Marcus found me in the hallway that afternoon, his gaze flicking to my scarf the way it always did now, careful, guilty. "Luna. Is everything—are you fully recovered?"

"I'm well, Marcus. Thank you for asking."

He hesitated, weight shifting between his feet. "The Alpha's been meeting the eastern border a lot. I only mention it because—" He stopped himself. "He says the ceremony will make things right."

"I'm sure it will," I said, and smiled, and watched the unease sit in his eyes without finding anywhere to go.

He walked away unconvinced. I went back to the drawer, and added his name to nothing. Not yet. Marcus hadn't done anything wrong. He'd only failed to ask the one question that would have unraveled it all sooner—the same question I'd failed to ask myself for eight years, until a heated blade taught me how to see.
